Rating: Summary: What happened?? Review: I have not read the books so I am rating this as a new viewer. This movie started out great and had a touch of class few movies have anymore. It was catchy and entertaining. However, it takes a twist into a D&D segment and totally throws you for a loop. I lost interest as my kids who were dying to see it. The ending was really weak, as well. We all know that Harry is the hero, but come on! They could've done something a bit better than that TOTALLY EXPECTED end sequence when the different houses were being awarded for their points. YAWN. All I suggest is you rent it before you buy it... I'm glad I did!
Rating: Summary: Great Movie and Kid Friendly, too Review: As one of millions of adult Harry Potter Fans, I was a little skeptical of how well the movie would follow the book. I was glad that it was pretty true to it. We watched it all weekend long with both of my kids (ages 6 years and 3 years). Both boys enjoyed it and didn't get scared.
Rating: Summary: Loved It! Review: I have not read any of the books and had no interest in the film when it came out because I didn't understand what all the hype was about. Now I do. I absolutely loved this movie. Wonderful special effects, brilliant costumes, and a very charming and likeable cast make this one of the best films of the year. Its magical, clever, engaging, funny, and exciting. Theres not a dull moment in this film and I can't wait for the second installment.
Rating: Summary: Everything and more... Review: It's one thing to say that Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone didn't align directly with the book.. However, for a movie with a target audience of children it's not possible to incorporate every single part of the original storyline unless you wanted a 5 hour epic. Credit must go both to JK Rowling and Chris Columbus for this project which capitivated almost all sectors of it's audience. The performance of Tom Felden as Draco Malfoy seems to have gone largely un-noticed... I believe that he equals if not out-doing Daniel Radcliffe. Also, the all-British casting of the show worked to great effect as it kept a sense of continuity in the accents and subtle nuances of the character. This movie is amazing.. sure! buy it for your children (but get a second copy for yourself while you're at it) You'll be swept away by the amazing characterisations, the music, the cinematography and the pure magic which goes to make up "Harry's Wonderful World"
Rating: Summary: Great Movie, Idiotic Special Features Design Review: I don't need to address the merits of the movie itself -- everyone knows it's great, and if you're reading this you've probably seen it anyway. The issue here is to review the way the movie is "packaged" into a DVD for consumers to buy. Sadly, whatever marketing genius was put in charge of this important project failed miserably -- the extra disc, which contains all the "Special Features" is a classic example of "let's show how clever our DVD product engineers are, and let's ignore any consideration of user-friendliness and user enjoyment". The entire 2nd disc is, for want of a better term, a video game, where you have to spend hours digging around and running repeatedly against frustrating dead ends, in order to actually "see" anything. I have 2 kids, ages 8 and 10, both highly intelligent and video-game literate, and they both expressed their frustration at the false starts, the blind alleys, and the overall lack of "entertainment" throughout this whole 2nd disc. It's really a pity -- they had an entire DVD's worth of digital storage capacity into which they could have packed truly useful and entertaining things -- interviews with the 3 child actors (there are none, anywhere), bloopers (whouldn't that have been great?) and in addition, some sort of on-the-side interactive video game which was not so full of inconsistencies and frustrating dead ends. Did anyone at the production company actually audience-test this package (including all age groups) before producing the final product?? I can't possibly believe that they did. Great movie, but extremely disappointing and frustrating DVD...
Rating: Summary: I have NEVER seen anything like it! Review: Harry Potter is just great! The movie is wonderful and filled with fun and action, just like the book. I have seen this movie 3 1/2 times and still aren't bored of it. The only thing is that I recommend wide screen instead.
Rating: Summary: Greatest movie ever! Review: This movie is by far the best movie ever! I absolutely love it! Since I bought it I've already watched it six times! It might seem crazy but the movie is everything I expected it to be. It's pretty true to the book as well. I can't wait till "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets." The whole cast was great too. Daniel Radcliffe made an amazing Harry Potter and Emma Watson was great as Hermione Granger. But I think that Rupert Grint gave the best performance. For being a newcomer he was great! I think everyone was great though. I would love to know how they made Robbie Coltrane look so big but I guess that is part of the magic behind the movie. I highly recommend buying this movie. Their are only two deleted scenes on the VHS but they are cool.
Rating: Summary: Great 2 Disc Package! Review: Contrary to many Harry Potter fans, I did not see the movie until it was released on DVD. I must say, however, that the long wait was not in vain, because not only do we have a wonderful movie captured on disc forever, so too do we have the deleted scenes, filmmakers' interviews, and behind the scenes clips on Disc 2! No doubt it is difficult for any filmmaker to recreate as popular a series as the Harry Potter books, but I think they did wonderfully, and the settings, the people, everything was as I had imagined it would be. I think they did a great job getting all the actors that they did to play the characters. For example, who else could I have imagined to play Professor McGonagall than Dame Maggie Smith, and what unbelievable luck for the filmmakers to have found Daniel Radcliffe! There was a great balance between the young and the legendary actors in this movie, so there's a little something for all ages, especially the young at heart. I think the magic of Harry Potter comes not only in the experiences that Harry goes through that we can relate to in our own lives in some respects, but in the morals of the 4 stories contained in each of the 4 books, as eventually given by Albus Dumbledore. I look forward to seeing the 4th book recreated, because the speech and the moral of the story provided by Dumbledore at the end of Book 4 couldn't help but bring me to remember recent tragic events, such as 9/11. Disc 4 is as equal a treasure as Disc 1, and it contains many special features. You have to get to the Sorcerer's Stone to see the 7 deleted scenes. I've only gone through it once, so bearing in mind that I'm going by memory alone, I think you go through Classrooms, and underneath the 4 classrooms is a pillar of some sort with 2 silhouette owls. Click on the two owls, and you will go through 3 tests. On the Potions test, take the 5th bottle that has a yellow liquid, and you will then find yourself in front of the mirror with the stone. Just grab the stone, and there's the deleted scenes! I also enjoyed the filmmakers interviews and the bits of behind the scenes clips between the interviews. It was definitely a joy to see the comraderie and fun that the actors had during the filming of the movie. The filmmakers also provide small hints of what is to come in the next movie, as they briefly discuss certain scenes in COS book that they will be trying to recreate. So all in all, I definitely recommend everyone to get this 2-disc package!
Rating: Summary: Great Movie Review: This was an increadible movie I just bought today and right away watched it. I absoulutly loved it! I can't even imagine what it was like in the theater. I knew I'd like the movie because I liked the book. I can't wait for the next movie to come out! I advise everyone to watch this movie.
Rating: Summary: GOLDY LOCKS WOULD SAY. "IT'S JUST RIGHT." Review: HIGH MARKS FOR CHRIS COLUMBUS. THE DIRECTOR HAS FINALLY BURIED THE SUCCESS OF HOME ALONE WITH A MUCH BETTER PIECE OF FILMMAKING. I HAVE NOT READ ANY HARRY POTTER BOOKS, BUT I CAN'T IMAGINE THIS MOVIE NOT DOING THE BOOK JUSTICE. I THOUGHT THIS FILM WAS PURE MAGIC THAT ADULTS MIGHT ENJOY EVEN MORE THAN CHILDREN. I MUST SAY AFTER VIEWING THE MOVIE WITH A GROUP OF KIDS AGES RANGING 4-10, THE KIDS HAD MANY QUESTIONS. THE MATERIAL MAY BE A LIL' ABOVE CHILDREN UNDER 13. HOWEVER THAT DOESN'T MEAN THE YOUNGER KIDS DIDN'T LOVE THE MOVIE. ANY DVD COLLECTION WOULD LOOK BARE WITHOUT THIS ONE, SO ADD IT TO YOUR COLLECTION TODAY! I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO THE NEXT HARRY POTTER ADVENTURE.
