Summary: Not a bad movie, but one scene makes me sick
Review: Dutch director Paul Varhoven takes us on a ride filled with the demise and downfall of our own society in his first American action adventure film, ROBOCOP. It is worth while to mention that ROBOCOP was shot in a time period where Detroit was known as the murder capital of the world. Since than, Detroit has cleaned up its act, and New York has lifted that title from the motor city's back. But in Varhoven's vision, Detroit is a spiraling downward paradox, filled with drugs, violence, and prostitution. The picture is dark and monochromatic, with a grim look upon our future. Its actually a bit depressing to tell you the truth. ROBOCOP is a satire, cracking jokes at modern day aspects of life such as the automotive industry, television commercials, and corporate development (the OCP portion of the film.) The movie has a solid script and a convincing cast, probably most entertaining are the OCP corporate hot shots, but no one steals the show like ED-209. Peter Weller does well with the material he is given to work with, even if he is a little on the monotone side. Kurtwood Smith is all too believable as the dark and sinister villain, Clarence Bodiker. The villains in this film are the most convincing, although its not that hard to make someone seem evil. Basil Poledoris's music score is commanding, even if a little overemphasized with synthesizer, but I guess that's how the 80's were. It really adds a whole other dimension to the film, and multi-academy award winner Phil Tippit's stop motion effects are amazing. I have mixed feelings about this film. Like I may have mentioned above, ROBOCOP is very convincing when it comes to its antagonists, almost too convincing. Along with the Robocop package comes one of the most brutal scenes in Hollywood History. Not since the ambush sequence in BONNY AND CLYDE has there been a more shocking murder in a motion picture. I'm speaking of the scene in which Murphy is, to say the least, shot to death. I felt this over-emphasis was anything but crucial to the plot, as there was no need for it, since we had already been given a display of the cruelty of the characters (can you fly Bobby...CAN YOU FLY! ) We didn't have to see Murphy take a shot between the legs, fall to his knees in agony, and lie there helplessly as his limbs are blown off one at a time. This isn't art, its savage. VARHOVEN, YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF! Now I'm aware of the criterion edition, which features even more of this nonsense, in crucifixion style! I mean come on! That's just sick if you ask me. One thing off-setting about this scene is that it takes place in a very confined setting, creating a claustrophobic illusion. We can sympathize for Murphy, especially us males when it comes to the first shot he takes. Some things just shouldn't pass through the lens of a camera, period. As for the rest of the film, three cheers, but this scene was totally unnecessary. The blade thru Kurtwood Smith's neck ain't pretty either, but at least he deserved it. The viewing of this scene leaves one feeling sick to there stomach, thanks Dad, for fast forwarding when I was a little kid.

Review: Robocop gets five stars out of five for action, violence, and Science Fiction. This film is truly a classic, and is very enjoyable to watch, even better than the Termiantor. The sequels proved to be better. The second one was the most violent, and might of been rated NC-17, the third one shows a big change in the sereis that goes to violent, mean and ugly to fun, and action. All of the Robocop movies were good the audio and vedio are the best, and I recommend you buy this instead of rent it.

Summary: DEPRESSING AND ENTERTAINING AT THE SAME TIME
Review: Dutch director Paul Varehoven invites us to take a look at the fall and demise of our own society in this ultra violent satirical action adventure, ROBOCOP. Robocop is set in the not to distant future, in the city of Detroit, Michigan. It is worth while to mention that the film was conceived and executed in a time where Detroit was known as the murder capital of the world. Since than, Detroit has cleaned up its act, and the city of New York has lifted the title from the motor city's back. But in Varehoven's vision, Detroit is a spiraling paradox, filled with violence, drugs, prostitution, rape, and corporate development (the OCP portion of the film). The city is looked upon as dark and monochromatic. Its actually quite depressing, to be brutally honest. The film was shot at an aspect ratio of 1.66:1, which I can only assume was done to make Varhoven feel more confortable, as it is the most common aspect ratio in Europe, and Varhoven is from Denmark. It was released thru the now defunct Orion pictures company, which a trademark of MGM. ROBOCOP offers a solid script, and even more convincing are the characters, perhaps even too convincing. Kurtwood Smith still freaks me out today, and the ruthless ensemble of villains is enough to give a four year old nightmares. Probably the most entertaining in the film are the board of directors, but no one steals the show like ED 209, who, coincidentally has a little bit of trouble when it comes to stair cases. Robocop contains the classic theme of good versus evil, and revenge against the wrong doers, and there are plenty of them in this film. Phil Tippit's special stop motion effects are amazing, and truly serve as one of the highlights of the film. I have mixed feelings about this film, and it is now time to share them. There is one scene in particular that has always bothered me, and I feel very embarrassed expressing these feelings, but it just seems like the right thing to do. As I mentioned above, ROBOCOP offers a significant amount of character development, but there is such thing as too much. I am speaking of the scene in which Murphy is brutally murdered. (brutal is a tame word for the scene) We are given several offensive incidents were there really wasn't a need for them. It was easy to understand how evil the villains were in this film, and we didn't need to see Murphy get shot between the legs, kneel down in agony, and watch helplessly as the rest of his limbs are blown away from his body. This isn't character development, its just plain and simply sick. One can't help themselves but to feel sympathy for Murphy, especially us males. I mean come on, that's a pretty cold first shot if you ask me. Varehoven should have spent more time thinking of ways to eliminate the killers rather than the victim. Now I am aware of the CRITERION COLLECTION DVD, which adds even more to this scene. In the uncut version, Murphy is executed in a crucifixion like manner, not a smart thing to do if you ask me. Despite how entertaining the rest of ROBOCOP is, I will never forgive the filmmakers for bringing such a horrific scene to life. Perhaps your the type who enjoys that sort of stuff, and if so, I advise you to join the army, and prey for another world war.

Summary: best movie ever!
Review: this movie is simply the greatest movie of all time! it has it all, great plot, great special effects, great acting, and LOTS of action! this is one of those movies that everyone should see. its a story about police officer alex murphy who gets shot to death in the line of duty and is reborn as the cyborg "robocop". who knew about a movie about a guy who gets shot to death then turned into a robot could be such a success? paul verhoeven was the only director who took the script after so many others turned it down. he did a fantastic directing job and basil poledouris added a soundtrack that brought so much life to this movie. the ED-209 sequences were just amazing. i loved the ed209 vs robocop fight that was action packed!

peter weller does an outstanding job as alex murphy/robocop, he does such a great job playing the cyborg. nancy allen also plays her role very good too, as the partner of robocop, anne lewis. Clarence boddicker is one of the baddest SOBs that i've ever seen in a movie, he is the ultimate villan.

all in all RoboCop is worth the buy! you must see it, you'll never forget it!

Summary: Applecart
Review: One of the finest science fiction films of the 1980's, in fact one of the finest Hollywood films of the 1980's, 'Robocop' is a dark, extremely violent satire on all kinds of things, most notably television and big business. Featuring a mixture of hot military hardware, and a self-mocking tone that makes you slightly ashamed to be enjoying the hot military hardware, it's probably Paul Verhoven's finest 80 minutes, and spawned two of the most dismal sequels since 'Grease 2' and the one that came after 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid', you know - the 'prequel'.

On DVD, it's tops - one-time Laser Disc specialists Criterion know what they're doing. The picture and sound quality is excellent, and the extra bits are extremely good - a set of amusing storyboards (which are presented in a dynamic fashion - you get to watch somebody jiggling the paper around as ED209 blows away a hapless executive), and some extra violence are the stand-outs.

Summary: automata
Review: this is frankenstein again. but newer and better. the original idea of frankenstein was so good that Mary Shelley is considered the creator of the genre of science fiction. It's debatable, most people go with Poe, but this idea was so on the money that artists are still stealing it/expounding on it. This is THE modern prometheus. Robo is the avenging angel, the poem of automata, the doll come to life. He is walking dead with a conscience. Frankenstien Unbound indeed. Science Vs. The soul. Another example and warning (beware of dolly the sheep clone?) that scientist will do anything they can get away with. It's their nature. look at Einstein. It's anarchy and it's a whole lot of fun. Check it out.

Summary: One of the Greats of modern cinema. (Note the capital 'G')
Review: Who would have thought that a film with such a ropey premise (cop gets blown to bits, is turned into a robot) could become an unforgettable classic. This potentially hopeless story was transformed by all involved into an exciting, visceral thriller with a powerful human drama at its heart. Peter Weller somehow makes his iconic RoboCop character a touching figure, conveying a degree of sadness through the armour and monotone voice, especially during the scenes where our hero remembers his past. As can be expected with any Paul Verhoeven movie there is sharp humor, edge of the seat tension and shocking violence in spades. Jolly good. On the technical side, the unfortunately non-anamorphic transfer is a little soft and smudgy for my liking but the sound is excellent.

Summary: An outstanding film
Review: Before director Paul Verhoeven starting pushing the limits of on-screen sex and kinkiness with movies like Showgirls and Basic Instince, he was pushing the limits of cinematic violence, and Robocop is a fine example of that. This movie has so much cleverly done graphic violence that is is great fun to watch and listen to. The effects are superbly done, a mixture of outstanding costuming and pretty good stop-motion, not to mention makeup. Of course, this movie completely represents the american police forces (they're not allowed to shoot to kill, and they're not allowed to cause thousands of dollars of property damage to stop a petty theft) but who cares, it looks cool! The acting is good, especially on Weller's part, and this movie does a prime job making fun of the past & the future through commercial interludes throughout the film. Boddicker is still one of the most cold-hearted SOB's to appear in a movie, and Robocop is still the most human non-human. This movie makes fun of large monopolizing corporations, conspiracies, and the military, but not too blatantly, and it's got some excellent sequences where people take baths in toxic waste and their flesh starts melting off their bones. This movie is simply a thrill to watch, an almost unrivalled gory, over-the-top action movie.

Summary: I love RoboCop!
Review: I don't have the Criterion Collection DVD, but from all the reviews I've read it doesn't sound like that big a deal. So for now I will watch my video tape, and maybe get the regular edition on DVD someday. Robocop is such a great movie. I saw Robocop 2 first at a drive-in movie theatre, I guess it was the summer of 1990. I have to admit, i didn't know about Robocop and I wasn't too thrilled to go see 2, but my friends wanted to go, so I went. The good thing about the drive-in (which has since been torn down, btw...last one in NY too I think) was that you could party in your car, know what I mean? Anyways, long story short, I LOVED Robocop 2! LOVED IT! So I went home and the next day I rented Robocop and I loved it more than 2 and it was good to see Robocop to get the history in order. I love the humor, it is bleak and sarcastic. The effects are amazing. The dingy, dirty look of the city. It just feels so...tacky! My boyfriend thinks it is so funny that I am such a RObocop freak. I recommend it to everyone, I make my friends watch it if they haven't seen it. I wonder, are there any other female Robocop fans out there? (...)

Summary: For Fans Only
Review: Since there are so many reviews of Robocop already I will keep it brief: the added material isn't worth the extra money, and the only reason to buy this disk is that the regular DVD is devoid of anything usefull. If you liked the movie buy it, if you are buying it because it has deleted material on it, skip it.
