Summary: It all depends on where you escape from
Review: The problem with this movie is that it forces Snake Plisskin to escape from Los Angeles, a town that doesn't need an earthquake to separate it from the rest of the U.S. Los Angeles jokes - really intimate L.A. jokes - are only funny to Angelinos. The rest of the world is too busy living normal lives to be hip to all the digs this film makes about what is considered the basic L.A. lifestyle. It is a shame, too, because the promise of Plisskin's return was too good to be true. That isn't to say that Carpenter and Russell didn't give it the old community college try, because they did. Nothing is tired or bored in this movie. It's just that the energy is used up in dealing with L.A. and, let's be honest, L.A. has never really been the most interesting city around. New York is good (but it has already been used). I suggest that next time, Snake and his thigh-high boots tries escaping from San Francisco, or Charleston, West Virginia.

Summary: Why must we give even one star?
Review: Ah, yes. The "take the easy money and run" school of film production.

Not that Carpenter (or Russell, for that matter) has ever been confused for an artist, but this sort of money-grubbing is below him.

File this under "Just because you can do something doesn't mean that you should."

Not so much a sequel as a remake of the original, without any of the charm or the style that made the original so fascinating. It does have a lovely right-wing political message grafted onto the last few minutes.

Released fifteen years after the first film (which should give one an initial clue), audiences stayed away in droves. So should you.

Run, don't walk, away. The most insulting sequel to the memory of an original film since "The Godfather Part III."

There is another question that must be asked- where is the original?

Summary: Snake is a Man's Man!
Review: If anyone says that they liked the original and not this one, then they are contradicting themselves. They are Basically the same movie... Correction.. The same Brilliant movie. The brilliantly detailed sets, the Oddball characters, the explosive Action scenes, the fast paced story and the remarkable directing make this a perfect movie. And of course the King of all Anti-heros.. Snake (call me Snake) Plissken.

Summary: Question
Review: This film isn't exactly the best of Kurt Russell's works. I was wondering does anybody remember which cigarettes Snake smokes at the end of the film ?

Summary: First time he was Mad max, now he's Duke Nukem
Review: 'Escape from L.A.' is good mid-90's action fare. In an age where digital effects and Hollywood explosions ruled, this movie was able to compete. Still, it needs to be compared to 'Escape from New York' (which amazon doesn't seem to have for some strange reason) and it falls a little short of it. 'Escape from New York' made up for its mid-range budget by blowing the mind with a good idea, good suspense and good directing. Although John Carpenter was merely sticking Kurt Russell in with actors he'd recycled from earlier pictures, he still managed to pull off a hit. Cashing in on the apocalyptic tomorrowland fad, Carpenter crafted a neat niney minute yarn which paved the way for 'The Terminator' in plot, violence and aura. 'Escape from L.A.' is a good flick in the sense that it was too irresistable a thing not to make as a follow up to the original '81 hit. Russell looks exactly the way he did 14 years before and his one-liners are great. A few quibbles, however: Peter Fonda is too mellow and the comic relief in the pic makes it more a party piece than 'E.f.N.Y.'. There's a lot to laugh at in here: a Che Guevara Underworld lord, a strung-out bimbo daughter of a politician, a trial by basketball (!) and a plethora of ridulous feral elements. Kurt Russell revells in reprising his character and it's good to see him wield the same amount of energy as before. I really wanted to give 4 stars to 'Escape from New York' and 3.5 to 'Escape from L.A.' but I can't give half points so the rating is a 'high' 3 stars for the latter.

Summary: AVOID THIS TRASH AT ANY VALUE
Review: John Carpenter's Escape from l.a. is like watching a Late Frank Zappa Festival over the sea. Kurt Russell wasted (he did that much better in Breakdown, than this movie), Stacy Keach (In a Ridiclous mike hammer type role), the only surprising member in this sequel is Steve Buscemi, otherwise please pass on this.

Summary: Marginally Impressive DVD Quality
Review: There is no better way to view John Carpenter's films in WIDESCREEN and it's no exception with this sequel to Escape from New York! Gratitude definitely has to be given for the DVD's quality as it fully displays all the shades of blacks [especially those on Snake's coat] in a solid yet crisp quality that even the Laserdisc version can't match. I also found this DVD much sharper, with more visible detail in the crouded scenes. To top it off, this DVD is a fine example of professional solid blacks! Unfortunately though, its sound is NOT quite as powerful as the THX-approved version on LD. Scenes where Snake fires his Core Burner, his cowboy guns and other big explosions, all seem to scream in a lower rumble when you compare this DVD with the LD. But if I were to choose between those 2, I'd still pick the DVD version as it has the Theatrical Trailer [among the coolest ones I've seen], yet there's no need to flip the disc! For fans, I recommend this version of the film [though I can never stop thinking there should have been more extra features in it]!

Summary: Great action movie.
Review: I like a variety of movies, from pi, to Star Trek, to Escape from L.A. Escape from L.A. is for those of us who enjoy bad acting, a thin plot, shallow characters, lots of explosions and bad attitudes.

It is not quite worth 5 stars, but almost.

Summary: Cinematic Abomination
Review: It is sad that a masterpeice like Escape from New York has been tainted by an awfull sequel such as Escape from LA. The sequel has none of the magic or creativity present in the first, not to mention, its just plain awfull. The storyline in part II is modeled after the first, but is not as compelling, and sadly either are the charachters. The Duke of New York is A#1. This movie is good for keeping the campfire going.

Summary: One of Carpenter's best
Review: Surprisingly, I find John Carpenter's best works to be his non-horror films. Two of his films Big Trouble in Little China and Escape From L.A. just have a certain ring to it that appeal to me more than Halloween and his other horror films (with the huge exception of the creepy Prince of Darkness and the very good In the Mouth of Madness. I found The Thing to be more along the lines of science fiction). I would watch Escape From L.A. over its predecessor, Escape From New York, anyday. It's special effects and acting are better and there's a heck of a lot more action. So it's not gripping sci-fi. That's what the first film should have been like and it failed. Carpenter was wise to make L.A. a satire rather than making it bleak and dark. You're more likely to enjoy Escape From L.A. than most of Carpenter's other films.
