Summary: Fans of intelligent SF will enjoy this movie
Review: I am amazed that a few reviewers hated this film. I've yet to meet anyone who didn't love it.

If you're 14 years old and your idea of a great SF movie is Event Horizon, then you'll be disappointed, because you'll need to keep your brain switched on while you watch Dark City.

This is one of the greatest films ever made in the genre, with an end-credit WOW! factor comparable to Blade Runner, 12 Monkeys or The Matrix.

Summary: Dark City on acid is an experience.
Review: Dark City is an above average sci-fi movie and an enjoyable way to spend an evening. The DVD is a great transfer.

Dark City on acid is an experience.

Summary: Before the Matrix
Review: First off, everyone who says this movie is just like the Matrix forgets that Dark City came out before the Matrix. The acting is much better in this movie. Also, the commentary by Roger Ebert is extremely interesting. Once you understand the genre of Dark City, then you can appreciate the acting done by Kiefer Sutherland. This is one of my all-time favorite movies. Buy this DVD!

Summary: Greatest Movie In a Long Time...
Review: Not a movie fan, but this definitely is one of my favorite movies of all time. Great special effects, awesome soundtrack, great unique story line, very suspensful.
People are comparing this movie with Blade Runner or Matrix, etc... Hey, they're all Sci-Fi movies, what do you think?
This is picture of the year! Should have been nominated for Best Picture.

Summary: One of the few truly good Sci-fi movies
Review: This movie is definitely one of the best science-fiction movies out. To call it the same thing as the Matrix is thinking with a simple mind. To call it hollywood trash is just spiteful. With that out of the way, on to the movie. The movie is quite dark, and that will probably turn off a lot of people who aren't into the dark sci-fi style, but this movie does dark sci-fi very well. It doesn't follow a generic formula, and the acting is very good (despite many people's problems with Sutherland's job). The movie's use of grotesque images and special effects is skillfully done and never becomes tacky, which a lot of movies tend to suffer from. The end scene may be a bit hoky, but that doesn't mean it's bad. Perhaps a sign of how good a movie this is is the triviality of people's complaints about it, even while they give it 5 stars. Bottom line though, if you're not a sci-fi fan, don't get it because it's not the type of movie for you. If you are, you will appreciate this movie for its uniqueness and great execution.

Summary: One Flaw Does Not Bring This Movie Down
Review: The -only- thing wrong with this movie is Kiefer Sutherland's horrific overacting. With so much going on visually & psychologically, his character's demeanor is a distraction, not an asset. Less is more, Mr. Proyas!

Otherwise, this movie succeeds on every level. And no matter how far down you drill, there's still meaning. Example: the character's name is John, and he wakes up in hotel room 614. Look up John 6:14 in the bible, and it says, "when they saw the signs that he had done, they said, 'This is indeed the prophet who is to come into the world.'" Which, of course, is our main character.

Ebert's commentary is absolutely excellent. This is a must-see.

Summary: same story as the matrix
Review: The movie wasn't bad but Dark City is the same thing as the Matrix. A man is suddenly contacted that the world he lives in is not real. There are nosferatu like "bad guys" that walk around hidden and like pretty much control everything. This man needs to find his secret hidden power. He finds it at the very end and battles with the bad guys with his new discovered power. Its the same story...watch one or the other. They're both ok.

Summary: pure Hollywood junk
Review: This movie is pure junk. The only good thing about it the dolby surround. After the first 5 minutes you think you are going to watch a very good sci-fi film, but minute after minute you realize this is the n-th bad, useless, meaningless Hollywood movie. Dialogues are trivial and stupid, actors are at their worst (Sutherland in particular), the plot is filled with tons of inconsistencies. The last 20 minutes are just embarassing, not to speak about the final scene, which is, well, pure Hollywood junk. Comparing this movie to Blade Runner is like comparing a cheeseburger to a pefectly cooked Lasagna... If you like good movies, please don't buy it. It's nothing more than a (bad) blockbuster.

Summary: This is the best movie I have ever seen
Review: People who say that the story has holes are absolutely right. In fact, I have noticed every single one of them. But all those people who keep drawing attention to the lack of logic in the script miss the whole point. This movie is an experience like no other. Watching it, one feels like watching someone's nightmare ( and how often do we get a chance to do that?). And, of course, just like any dream the movie sometimes makes little sense. But dreams are not supposed to be perfectly logical! LOGICAL OR NOT, THE MOVIE ALWAYS WORKS ON A PSYCHOLOGICAL LEVEL. THE IMAGES ARE ABSOLUTELY UNFORGETTABLE. THIS MOVIE IS IMAGINATION IN ITS PURE FORM. EVERY FRAME IS A PROOF OF THAT.

Summary: Shows the Matrix how it should be done
Review: Rarely is the cinematic audience treated to something so fantastic. Dark City is another philosophically-orientated science fiction film, set in a city where the sun never rises and where you can be a different person from day to day. Unfairly compared to the Matrix, Dark City is more psychological and ultimately more frightening in its complexity and strangeness. Rufus Sewell takes the character of John Murdoch, a man who wakes up with no memory near a dead body, and both the police and a sinister conclave of men with strange powers on his trail. The whole story accelerates towards a terrifying and fantastic climax, leaving the audience with plenty of questions, and thankfully the special effects are not the true stars, just props as they're supposed to be. A truly brilliant film.
