Summary: better than expected
Review: I'm fond of dystopia movies, and 12 Monkeys paints a good picture of one. Before this movie, I wasn't much of a fan of Brad Pitt as an actor, but his performance in this really won me over, and I stopped thinking he was just a pretty face.

Review: Deja-voo-doo time with Bruce Willis and Co.!Inspired by the now famous yet hard to find "still" short, this tangled tale of time-travel, violence, time-travel, sex, time-travel, homeless people? You get my drift. It is fun to watch a few times, then to revisit, and has quite it's own life too. Willis as the "criminal" incarcerated in 'some future prison', optioned to return to the past to find out Why or What polluted our atmosphere, the future Earth dwellers, like H>G> Wells "Time Machine" creatures are forced to live underground. It all has something to do with the "12 Monkeys" - a subversive group; possibly run by the versatile Brad Pitt - excellent [and double nominated / Golden Globe,Oscar] for this role! Our Bruce flashes back and forth in time [the process still has a few bumps] and along the way encounteres bemused psychiatrist the lovely Madeleine Stowe - more complications and radical deja-vu. Then we have those homeless people - but that's another story - don't want to totally ruiin this for the uninitiated.
Monumental sets, even sinister props ["Dark City" time.....quite a good companion]. Great visuals - a perfect book-end to "Brazil" another Gilliam nightmare [the good kind].

Review: As a general rule, I really enjoy movies that play with the sense of time. "Memento" comes to mind. "12 Monkeys" plays like a sci-fi version of that, full of plot twists, scathing satire, revelations, and then re-revelations that completely screw you up again. Brad Pitt has a standout performance, acting very much like one of the monkeys in the title. This is such an innovative, well-written movie that I consider it nothing short of brilliant. Terry Gilliam outdoes himself with every single movie he helms. I did enjoy all the parallels to "Vertigo" (along with other Hitchcock movies), although most caught me off-guard... never have I seen such blatant homages placed next to very subtle ones (notice the use of counterzooms, a Hitchcock invention). From the opening credits, I enjoyed finding references to his work. Like any great movie, when the blackout comes at the end and the credits start to roll, you'll sit there relishing the experience. I said "wow" so many times through "12 Monkeys", I should have had a counter. If you dislike movies like this, go back to "Pearl Harbor" and "Dude, Where's My Car?" and leave the real art to the people that can grasp it.

Summary: Very Interesting, but Dreary and Hard To Follow...
Review: First of all, this movie dispels the myth that Mr. Pitt can't act. He pulls off one of the best acting coups ever in a very difficult, and disquieting role. Bruce Willis does a good job too, even if he may be overdoing it at times. I admit I should probably see this one again, since it is hard to follow, but there is a stroke of genius here in just about every category. The time travelling plot is given some freshness, and the flashbacks (especially in the airport) are outstanding too, even if a little confusing. The WWI scene was great too,along with the mental institution. The Philadelphia scenes,especially the animals near City Hall at the beginning, and the shopping scenes, not to mention the inner city scenes of desolation were top of the line too. Probably this should get a 5-star, except it is generally very depressing and dreary, and filmed in gray tones as if to emphasize the point. Also there are a couple of needlessly violent/bloody scenes too, which may be realistic, but don't make really make it more watchable. Still, worth a look, and I'm glad I finally checked it out!

Review: We watched (my wife and I) this movie several times. Each time we have come up with a different conclusion on "What happened next" after the movie ended. We never could agree. :-) This movie is intriguing and will keep you guessing on the conclusion. One of my most favorite movies.

Summary: To watch not once, not twice....maybe more than a few times
Review: Really great....this is one of those several-times-watched movies of mine (and there's not many of those). This is the type of movie you watch, and then invite your friends over to watch, simply to see and hear their reaction, and then discuss it with them. A whole new respect for Brad Pitt's acting and adaptability to roles emerged after this movie, as well as thorough appreciation for both Willis and Stowe and the way they carry they carry thier roles out, and infuse the film with their presence. See this.

Summary: The Bounds Of Heaven
Review: I will not attempt to describe the plot as this has already been done rather well by a number of people. I will just rave... 12 Monkeys is the most breathtaking piece of recursive temporal symmetry since Joyce's Finnegan's Wake. Perhaps one of the most perfectly conceived and executed movies of all time - up there with Blade Runner and Jacob's Ladder. While the Wake is structured around a recursive temporal spiral, overlaying an archetypally-driven consciousness matrix, 12 Monkeys is necessarily simpler, because of its movie format. Yet the movie generates the same transcendent majesty as the concluding temporal convergence reveals to the viewer that this has been as much a spiritual odyssey as a brilliantly constructed Science Fiction story. Without giving anything away, the bitter-sweet climax is one of the most stunning and uplifting scenes in the history of the film industry. This total classic and its cast and crew should have won everything in sight. It's way over Joe Wife Beater's head, but any true Sci Fi fan will love it.

Review: Yeah, the movie is great, I've seen it some 30-40 times, hope to buy it soon. It's interesting to see that Brad Pitt didn't won the Oscar and Bruce Willis wasn't even nominated.

Summary: Captivating sci-fi film
Review: In an attempt to clear his criminal record, James Cole (Bruce Willis) volunteers to travel back in time to the year 1996 in order to have a chance to find out where a certain virus came from. If it can be successfully discovered and dealt with, this virus might not wipe out over 5 billion people like it has the potential to do. Science Fiction films are one of my favorite genres of movies, and that's what "12 Monkeys" is. But don't expect to see laser guns, starships in outer space, or aliens. It's not quite that sci-fi. "12 Monkeys" is mainly a film about time traveling and about the struggles that James Cole has to experience in order to even get close to finding the virus he's looking for. "12 Monkeys" has just about everything going for it. The acting from Bruce Willis is as great as ever, and most of the others, including Madeleine Stowe and Brad Pitt, also offer some of their best. If you're a special effects junkie, you're going to be disappointed because "12 Monkeys" is one sci-fi film that doesn't rely much on special effects at all. But, it does have what it should, and that's a great plot and script. As long as you pay attention to what's happening, "12 Monkeys" will never get boring. If you're a fan of sci-fi movies or films about time traveling, I definitely recommend getting "12 Monkeys." When you see it, you'll see why it's still being talked about (in a good way) a lot, even though it's not exactly a new release. When that happens, that's when you know that a movie is a true classic.

Summary: 12 Monkeys
Review: Yes, it is science fiction that drives the plot of this powerful and often mind bending film. But it is the magnificant performances of the three main cast members that make me say absolutely see this movie. When I watched Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt create their characters, Willis the sane man who everyone (eventually even himself) believes is crazy, and Pitt the insane man who everyone (including himself) believes is a genius, my thought while I watched the story unfold was "what brilliant acting!" But later, when the movie ended and the dust settled in my mind, I realized that the performance of Madeleine Stowe far eclipsed even those of the other great actors. Her performance was so incredibly real as the psychiatrist who was trying to put together the pieces of the time paradox puzzle - first terrified of Willis and trying to convince him that he was crazy and needed help, and then trying harder to convince him that he was not crazy and they all needed HIS help - her performance was so real that during the movie, I never even considered the possibility that she was acting! It wasn't till the movie was over that I realized how perfect a job she had actually done. Yes, 5 stars for 12 monkeys - but the 5th star belongs to Madeleine Stowe.
