Summary: Thought-provoking masterpiece
Review: A true classic - if you are after pure action, avoid the film. If you are looking for a film that makes you think about things in a different light, watch it.

By the way, you know where the term 'HAL' comes from? If you add one letter to each of the three letters (i.e H becomes I, A becomes B, and L becomes M)......

Summary: HORRIBLE DVD Transfer
Review: I am a real fan of this movie. That is one reason that I am so disappointed in the truly awful transfer that was made to DVD. The space scenes are muddy, with the whites, greys and blacks all blending together. There is significant banding on all of the contrasty scenes. The sound-track is scratchy.

Part of the problem is that they placed the entire (long) film on one side of the DVD, so I am sure that there is too much compression for some of the material. But even there, it is obvious that the quality control was just plain poor. Warner should be ashamed of this performance.

Compare this with some of the truly great DVD transfers to see what you are missing. My Fair Lady, for example, is a 70 mm film that was transferred with skill and care, and it is just glorious. 2001 defines the other end of the spectrum! Believe it or not, the VHS version looks better.

Summary: An audio-visual assault
Review: I know that as a film student, it's my duty to like this movie, but I'm sorry. I just can't. I saw it in a theatrical setting (ie. hard chairs, full-blast surround sound, large screen, but only one bathroom break) and it was easily the most miserable 3+ hours of my life to date. Sorry, but I resent any movie that leaves me with a headache and sick stomach.

Summary: Stanley Kubricks Masterpiece
Review: When I first saw this film, I had no clue what it was about. When i watched it a few more times, I got it a little more. I think that MGM studios should re-release this masterpiece. I would pay any price today to see that film. I would recommend this film to any Kubrick fan, Sci-fi lovers, or a classic movie buff like myself.

Summary: The most unquie experience ever
Review: Never before have I seen A film like this. It is not likely any other film maker could pull this off like Kubrick has. Even the ape man scenes were more interesting than your average saturday night watching HBO.Of course HAL9000 the smart computer gone mad stole the show but there is still so much more in this film. The planet mission scenes are breathtaking and errie, and very profound. The score is magnificent. Not sure if I fully understand the ending but the imagry was very powerfull and gave me chills throughout. Of course this movie is NOT for the short attention span. If you have the patience for a truly unquie and mindblowing experience, watch 2001.

Summary: Kubrick And The Hollywood Machine
Review: It's no small wonder that Stanley Kubrick never won an Oscar for direction in his career. 2001: A Space Odyssey stretched the limits of the screen and our imaginations. This wasn't science fiction, but science fact. His legacy is still discovered in the countless youth who have the pleasure of watching this film for the very first time.

Summary: The best sci-fi film ever made....
Review: This would remain as Kubrick's best work in his life. A kind of revolution film for sci-fi putting in classic music and silence. The part where the monkeythrows the bone up towards the sky was INCREDIBLE. For some people who don't understand, it means by man started from bone, and now we can make spaceships and getting better...... The expansion of human life......

Putting in HAL in this movie was another INCREDIBLE thing in this film. When I first seen HAL, it gave me a friendly, and a helping-human manufactured robot. But after when he reads Dave and Frank's lips, the more I look into HAL's eyes, I got more and more scarier.

So after human destroys their own manufacture, it goes towards the ending, always making me confused every time I see the movie. But it was solved yesterday. What I personally think about the ending is that the light that Bowman saw was a kind of warp towards his future. (sent by the aliens of course) When he saw the mirror, we can see that he got old. After seeing another Bowman getting older and older, he's seeing his future, and he becomes born again in earth to teach more space(?) skills. And of course, by the aliens. Stanley Kubrick didn't show us the aliens, but this gave me more imagination about the aliens. INCREDIBLE! I say it's the best work by Kubrick. IF there's really some aliens, they would be one step further then us. (Special thanx to Paul Whang!) 4.5 out of 5.

Summary: Probably the best science fiction movie ever made
Review: 2001: A space odyssey is probably the best science fiction film ever made. I saw it shortly after Star Wars: Episode One and realized just how mediocre that film was. Stanley Kubrick made an amazing movie with a small (for today) budget. Usually visual storytelling fails miserably but it's done right here. The cinematography and special effects were great and I still remember the entire film. Okay, the acting isn't exactly "powerful and dramatic," but it wasn't meant to be. It's a shame all the actors went into obscurity after this, though.
