Summary: Kubrick¿s weakest movie
Review: Maybe I am in the minority, but I tend to like Kubrick's later movies, i.e. The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, and Eyes Wide Shut, much better than his earlier works. I especially do not like this one. Of all his movie, A Clockwork Orange feels sadly dated. What may have been controversial and jaw-dropping in 1971 only seems blasé in 2002. While it supposed to be set in the near future, it doesn't look futuristic at all. I even doubt that it ever did. True to the form, this movie certainly embodies Kubrick's cynical view of humanity, but does so almost to overdrive, but it certainly doesn't work as brilliantly as in Barry Lyndon for example. In my view he fails to establish why we should feel sympathy, or even care for that matter, for this hoodlum. To the contrary, as a viewer you almost feel like he deserves everything he gets. The first 20 minutes, however, are excellent. Sadly the rest of the movie just drags. By the way, the DVD is devoid of extras; we only get a theatrical trailer, a really bad one at that.

Summary: Its just a movie, but a BAD one.
Review: 'A Clockwork Orange' is a BAD movie. Not bad in a way that one would think a film is bad, but bad in what its trying to say. The film is trying to say, in my opinion, that thought (whether good or evil) should not be taken away from the individual. That idea sound fine and dandy, but after watching what Alex has done throughout the story, I felt disgusted by this movie. Intellectuals can sit around and aruge how this movie brilliantly conveys the idea of free will, but I wonder what rape and murder victims have to think about Kubrick's overrated work.
Let me ask the admirers of 'A Clockwork Orange' what I think is a very good question.... If the film was starring someone similar to Jeffery Dahmer or any other real-life killer, would you still praise Kubrick's work??

Summary: Started a Negative Trend in Film
Review: ...I know everybody loved this movie. The whole punk movement was influenced by it, and all the cool kids in high school dug it. Malcolm McDowell does an amazing job, and of course Stanley Kubrick leaves a very unique imprint on the vibe of the whole thing.But now EVERYBODY is doing the brutality/sex/shock thing, and the movie theater has become a pretty depressing place to go to. "Natural Born Killers," "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer," "Bad Lieutenant," "Pulp Fiction," "Boogie Nights," "Leaving Las Vegas," "Happiness," "American Beauty,"...they all seem like descendants of "Clockwork" to me, in that they all present cynicism, violence, rape, and/or generally depraved behavior in "hip" anti-hero ways that will certainly appeal to the alienated teenager. As far as I'm concerned, "Full Metal Jacket" and "Eyes Wide Shut" were just more of the same (conveying the same "aren't-human-beings-just-shameful-little-pigs" sort of message). And of course it has bled over into music as well, spawning all of our Trent Reznors and Marilyn Mansons and on and on. I shouldn't say that "Clockwork Orange" was the CAUSE of it all, but it did set the precedent, and now people seem to see "art" as an excuse to wallow in nihilism and nothing more.

Summary: Counter to Trash
Review: After the first 15 minutes, I too thought this movie was over the edge in senseless violence and noise. I thought, "What's so good about murdering someone to a background of Beethoven and "Singin in the Rain?" I decided I would rather go to sleep. But I try to view all movies to the end, so I picked up where I left off two days later. This was a five star movie all the way. The first 15 minutes sets-up everything. It was like reading a thematic and philosophic concise novel which rooted for individual freedom and choice. "Clockwork" was actually a pro-christian film (recall the priest opposition to the program). It was a hurray for our society which is quite rare in a film that would be considered avant-garde. And to counter the criticism of the apparel worn - That just added to the comedy for me. The lodger who took over McDowell's room at his parents house. Look at that belt around his abdomen then tell me you're not smiling. The funked up clothes parallel's the brilliant funked up language. 6 stars if I could because I'm cured all right!

Review: Hmmmmmmmm... well, this movie definitely makes you think. It was a strange movie, but it was really good. Hearing the Kubrick was on acid while filming the movie made me like it even more...

Summary: A Great Film
Review: This is one of the greatest and most revolutionary films of the 20th century. I don't see how someone can watch 15 minutes of this movie and be so ignorant and immature as to turn it off at that point. You should grow up before watching this movie. It is not a child's movie, because only children would be so infantile as to focus on the violence and sex, and not even begin to comprehend the underlying theme of this film. Stanley Kubrick was a brilliant man and director, and this movie is more than deserving to be one of the gifts he left this world with. The acting and directing are excellent, and this movie features a social commentary that many people are to blinded to see. Watch it and see if you agree with me.

Review: This movie was pure and utter trash. You will be offended and shocked by this films violence and portrayal of rape, and religion. I cut it off after the first 15 minutes or so. I couldn't pollute my mind any further with this junk. There are other great Kubrick films out there. Pick from one of those and leave this one to the dogs.

Summary: here's one for the thinkers
Review: I did not much care for 2001: A Space Odyssey. Due to that rather negative experience, i wasn't all that interested in Kubrick's other works, assuming that they would all be...similar. However, i was tipped off by a few friends, and decided I'd try out A Clockwork Orange. Like the more recent films Fight Club and Seven, Clockwork Orange utilizes suprising imagry and violence as a vehicle for theme. Obviously, the film's ~almost~ X-rated material is not for the squeemish. However, if you enjoy (as i do) seriously thought provoking art, you might be willing to give the movie a try anyway. Due to its thematic pertinence, I did not find the film's sex&violence at all gratuitious. the acting is excellent, the screenplay and plot are great. My main fault with the film was its visual aging. Its odd mixture of vaugley futuristic elements with obviously 70s styles makes it feel more like an "alternate 80s" than the dystopatic near future that's intended. To summarize: I enjoyed the film enormously - i still puzzle over it daily, though i saw it over 2 weeks ago. If you enjoyed the thematic commentary in 'Seven' or 'Fight Club', you will likely have no problem with the obviously superior Clockwork Orange. If you're opposed to sex/violence (rather more of the former than the latter), but enjoy films like Citizen Kane, you should probably give Clockwork Orange a try. I dont see the film as about 'what's not permissable to prisoners', or 'violence doesnt pay'. those both seem to me rather 2-dimensional. I beleive Clockwork Orange is about the struggle between individual freedom and the masses of society. What i have not yet figured out is exactly where the film stands on the issue. There's a good deal more to say about how i interpreted the film, but im sure no one wants to read it... uhhh excuse me whilst i search for an adequate conclusion.... oh yes... i hope you enjoy the film.

Summary: lacks the books' morals
Review: i thought the film was effective in that it made u think about all the topics , but having read the uncut book i dont think it has the right angle. in the book, alex has a human streak throughout and there are times when he is more than a monster and u can feel empathy for him.also, in the end he sees one of his old droogs as a reformed citizen with fiance.the book ends with alex considering giving up his ultraviolence in exchange for a normal life. i think this carries the overall message, of let ppl make up their own minds, much better.
