Rating: Summary: Disney's great animated classic Review: Walt Disney's animated fairy tale is the movie by which all Disney films, and indeed all animated films must be compared to. This film can stand up to the best animated films made today. The wonderfully detailed animation is quite remarkable. Even in this era of computer animation, animated films rarely reach this level of expertise. The rich colours seem to jump at you out of the screen. As for the songs, they are so well known that many people can hum them by heart. "Whistle While You Work", "I'm Wishing", "Heigh-Ho", and "Someday My Prince Will Come" have all entered into public conscienceness. I'll never forget the queen's terrifying transformation into an old hag.Disney doesn't forget to add some humour. For a kids film with such grim subject matter (an evil queen trying to kill her step-daughter), humour is a vital necessity. I love the way Disney gave each dwarf a distinct personality. There's Doc, Happy, Sneezy, Grumpy, Sleepy, Bashful, and Dopey, all named for obvious reasons. I loved the scenes where Sneezy's chronic hayfever causes the dwarves to be blown across the room like in a hurricane. It's terribly amusing to hear Grumpy expressing disdain over Snow White's cooking ("Careful, it might be witch's brew!"), and Snow White's policy of cleanliness. Then there's poor Dopey getting selected to investigate what it is that is laying upstairs. The forest animals are not without moments of their own, the scene where the animals help Snow White to clean the dwarfs' cottage is one of the film's most delightful moments. All that being said, It occured to me that Snow White herself is rather poorly drawn. Her features are all vague and without great detail. Also, the person who voices Snow White speaks in too high a voice. "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs'" release in 1937 was unexpectedly timely. In Europe, Hitler was viciously persecuting the Jews, while Stalin was conducting his brutal purges of suspected enemies. The way the dwarves take in Snow White and shield her from the evil queen can be compared to the way brave and kindly people hid the Jews from Hitler's Gestapo. "Snow White and the Seven Dwars" is not just a great family film, but one of the greatest of all films.
Rating: Summary: rated 7 STARS! Review: Okay, how do I put 7 stars as a rating? This is certainly the best buy I've made in a while! And a very good reason to buy the DVD even if you own the video tape already. I do and I'm glad I got the DVD because it has such an abundance of extras you can spend hours just reading, looking and listening. It contains not only a history that is presented charmingly and lively, a lot of galleries where you can check out the individual object at your own pace but also so many "goodies" like character studies, camera tests, abandoned concepts etc etc etc - I'm not one to praise if I'm not convinced BUT THIS IS WORTH THE MONEY times over! Not just for die hard Disney fans but for everyone!
Rating: Summary: Disney's first feature length cartoon Review: Thsi is a very nice film. I don't own this DVD so I don't know the special features so I just am rating the film. You know the story. The animation is amazing for it's time, and bet it's visually remastered in this addition. Get it.
Rating: Summary: Spectacular Review: I've always loved Snow White, but this remastered edition is stunning. The sounds and colors are so rich and vibrant that even my mom (who remembers when Snow White was released in theaters) couldn't remember it being so good. Great for the kids, but even better for those who remember the way it was before.
Rating: Summary: Mirror, mirror.......... Review: Watching this classic on DVD, you could be sitting in a cinema in 1937 watching the original release. Prepare for sensorary overload with this double disc, digital renovation of a timeless American classic. Everyone knows the classic fairy tale story of the princess and the seven dwarfs, so there's nothing new I can say there, but I can garuntee you've never seen it looking anything like this. If you're used to having seen the movie on video, prepare for a shock: the outlining of the characters, the colour of the animation, the backgrounds, and the overall setup of the picture are so well defined on DVD, it will leave you awestruck. And that's only the beginning: the audio commentary is precise and EXTREMELY informative with excerpts of archived interviews with Disney himself, (if you ask me, there's nothing more disappointing than a classic movie with a rambling, aimless DVD commentary) The only audio commentary I'm aware of to be equal to this is on the Godfather series. The making of featurette charts Dinsey's history from the simple "Laugh-O-Grams" to his ambitiousplans for an animated feautre. Watch out for the foreign translation clips of the Dwarfs varying names in different countries. Also on the second disc, is at least five deleted scenes partially animated (including a full colour scene of the witch at her couldron) And you may have to delve further to find it, but also included is the original transcript of the Grimm Brother's fairy-tale. Dinsey's high regard in which it regards itself is all too evident in the "Dinsey through the decades" feature (there's no mention of The Black Couldron here) as presenters blissfully glide over the company's impending bankruptcy druing the mid-eighties. Still, this is a DVD "Experience" not to be missed. Dinsey will soon recall these limited edition DVD's in time for the re-release of Beauty and the Beast, after this, it won't be available on DVD or video for the next 10 years! No cinema classic has been better restored or better respected in it's wealth of bonus features. If your intrested in other classic movies on DVD, I highly recommend Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo.
Rating: Summary: The one that started it all!! Review: This was my 2nd dvd purchase, and I am ever so glad. I own the Video and Laser disc version, but combined they don't hold a candle to DVD. The tour thru the library of Disney Artist drawings is so awesome! The animation of that alone is breathtaking, and the rendering of "Someday My Prince Will Come" By Barbra Streisand herself, WOW. I hoped it would be her in the flesh singing, but they dubbed her voice over clips of Snow White, but thats OK by me, they did a great job. I saw the Theater Version and they did a excellent job of clean-up on the print. Buy This Version! Befor it goes back in the VAULT for 10 years!!!!!
Rating: Summary: never liked it Review: I am very much against this movie, for many reasons. Why it has gone down in history as a children's classic, I will never understand. I mean, come on--a jealous witch-stepmother trying to have her stepdaughter killed by a hunter? Telling the hunter to bring Snow White's heart back in a box? Turning yourself into a pathetic old beggar and poisoning an innocent girl with an apple? Not very wholesome in my eyes; it's almost kind of sad that something like this was made for a child's viewing and enjoyment. In reality, this is anything but child material. I will not deny the DVD. It is good--very good. But I hate this movie, and I'm sure that some of you may dislike me for saying that, but it surprises me that people don't see what a horrible film this really is. If you're going to make a horror movie, that's fine, but don't coat it with animation, stick in some "good guys" (in this case, the dwarfs) and call it a children's movie. There are some action films that are more kid-friendly than this. To me, "Snow White" is just too much. It's vulgar, crude, and just altogether violent. Not the kind of Disney movie you need a big, lengthy DVD for. Pick a better quality Disney movie for that. You might completely disagree with me--and please know that I respect your opinion--but I will never be a fan of this movie. Sure, I saw it quite a few times in my day, but the more I realize what it's all made of, the more I resent it. I am sorry, but this is just not a children's movie. It simply isn't. I would regard it as a film for anyone over 10 years old, and that's not the age level that Disney wants for its movies. Again, I respect your opinion if you love the story of Snow White, but I am one of those few who will avoid it at all costs.
Rating: Summary: A Great Movie Classic!! Review: Of course, nothing beats a great Disney movie classic!! You can't go wrong in purchasing this classic as a DVD for your collection! It's good versus evil and we all know that good prevails over evil. On this DVD version, however, there are some facts, features, etc., that you do not get with the original VHS movie plus there is a great game that kids will enjoy playing. My daughter loves the movie & enjoys the game!! Nothing can really discribe this movie other than it is a classic!
Rating: Summary: A true Classic! Review: I purchased this DVD for my best friend after searching the malls up and down! Thank God for Amazon. COM! Snow White is a true classic and deserves to be preserved on DVD as Disney has done. A marvelous movie!
Rating: Summary: Jam-Packed With Creamy Disney Goodness Review: Although I'm not the biggest fan of animated Disney flicks, I must admit that "Snow White" is one of the more memorable ones. The lighthearted humor is a sight more gentle, and the story goes at a slower pace than many of today's Disney 'toons, which are beginning to take on a hyperactive, anime-like quality to them. And though I do enjoy the occasional anime flick, there are times I just gotta slow down and take the nice, leisurely scenic route. For times like that, this legendary piece of Disneyana hits the spot. Even though the animation looks relatively primitive compared to Disney Studio's more modern 'masterpieces', its quality and painstaking detail holds its own quite well. And the DVD picture quality is even better than when I saw it in theaters! Of course, what I saw in the theatre was the umpteenth, unrestored re-release, complete with scratches & stains on the film and a sometimes-scratchy soundtrack, so it's not really that big a surprise that the DVD picture quality is far superior. Never the less, the folks at Disney have done a commendable job of restoring this classic to its original condition! Kudos to you, o laborers for the Disney Empire! When it comes to just plain extra stuff, the "Snow White" Special Features disc is on or above par with other such fully-loaded platters as 'Terminator 2 Ultimate Edition", "The Abyss", and "Independence Day"! When Disney promoted this 2-disc set as an "all-new immersive DVD experience", they weren't kidding! In all, there's approximately three hours worth (over twice the running time of the movie alone!) of other tchotchkes for the dedicated Disneyphile to enjoy! My faves are the deleted scenes, most of which were outline-drawing animations and/or storyboarded parts with the original recorded dialogue. I thought some of these parts would've really worked well in the movie had they been completed and restored- the seven dwarves' "Soup Song" was especially amusing. Other features that you'd expect on a Special Edition presentation DVD are here, including trailers for almost all of the releases and re-releases of the movie, storyboard-to-screen comparisons, and documentaries (behind-the-scenes, a featurette on the restoration of the movie for the 1993 re-release and DVD release, etc). There's also publicity stills, stills from the original media guide, radio promo spots, timelines of Walt Disney's biography and his studio, concepts for the movie that weren't used, the original Grimm Fairy Tales text, and much much more! The only drawbacks I saw were the animated menus, featuring the Magic Mirror. It takes a bit too long for everything to load up, and get ready to play. The Magic Mirror's somewhat rambling bits of dialogue alongside the menus doesn't help too much, either. Other than this, it's pretty much smooth sailing all the way! 'Late
