Summary: Stolen awards
Review: How could the academy give the award for the best actress in a leading role to julie andrews, instead of giving it to AUDREY HEPBURN?Only because Audrey didn''t really perform the songs of My fair lady?Well everyone should know that Audrey had worked very hard on her voice. She was told only very late and that she would have been dubbed replaced.Well sometimes the wicked witches win.Perhaps Mary Poppins put a magic pill in the urns of the jurors.

Summary: BET YOU HUM the SONGS after VIEWING!
Review: Take two unruley children in a banker's home and add a superb BRITISH NANNY (Julie Andrews) who seems to reveal a very bizarre personality when the children are out of their parent's range. One could say that Mary Poppins has a magical right-brain personality. Delightful adventure, catchy songs, terrific dancing, colorful scenes. Add Dick Van Dyke, David Tomslinson, Glynis Johns, Hermione Baddley, Reta Shaw, Arthur Treacher, and Reginald Owen who are just some of the many wonderful performers in this dynamic, early-Disney musical.

Summary: My Son Loves It
Review: Well, most people I know have seen Mary Poppins at least once. It's a classic children's movie. My 15 month old son just adores this movie and all of the songs in it. He can just sit there and watch it any day of the week. Mary Poppins was always one of my favorites as a young girl & now my son can enjoy it as well. The DVD does have some extras to speak of. Although I haven't seen them yet. Only because everytime we put it in we just start watching the movie. What 15 month old cares about extras? I would definately reccommend this to anyne who has children. They will love it. I find myself singing along while my son dances. Who says everyone has to grow up?

Summary: Wonderful movie, but for those who care about such things
Review: this DVD release falls short of the mark by being non-anamorphic,(take note Amazon!) something that is annoying for those of us with widescreen sets, and an omission on Disney's part that makes me wonder why they released a widescreen only DVD. The appearance of the movie would have benefitted from a little more effort from Disney for this second DVD release of a classic movie. Yes, of course I bought, it because my daughter loves it, again and again and....

Summary: Not Anamorphic
Review: The movie is definitely 5 stars to me and my family. However, videophile beware, this new gold collection release is advertised here as widescreen anamorphic, however it is actually the same letterboxed version previously released, with a few extras. The keepcase does not claim to be anamorphic (enhanced for widescreen TVs, etc.) So those of you with a widescreen TV, don't be disappointed.

Summary: A movie destined to last through the years
Review: It's said that when Pamela Travers, the creator of Mary Poppins, was asked what she thought of this movie, she said something like, "Oo-ooo-h, I shall be very silent." It's quite true that the Mary Poppins books and the movie are very different. For one, the Mary Poppins of the books is much more prim and prissy and proper than the Poppins played by Julie Andrews in the movie. There are four children in the first book (Jane, Michael, John and Barbara) and a fifth (Annabel) comes along in the next book. Some of the books also read more like a series of incidents than a tightly-knit story. The movie tells a definite story: of how a father who is estranged from his children gets re-united with them through all the strange and wonderful things that occur when the perfect nanny with magical powers literally blows into their house with the east wind. Some incidents from the books that are portrayed as written, others changed to suit the movie. When the movie deviates greatly from the book it is based on, I haved liked the books far more than the movie. "Mary Poppins" is the exception, where I feel the books and the movie have their own (and very different) charm. Julie Andrews is terrific, the setting of Edwardian London great, the songs are fabulous, and this is a movie to be treasured and seen over and over again down the years.

Summary: When it's Good, it's Great
Review: I enjoyed reading Joe Comer's review (above) and agree with most of it, but we shouldn't go overboard on MARY POPPINS. There are dreadfully slow parts; the direction and editing could have been a lot better. The first time I saw it "Chim Chim Cheree" bored me; I confess that with re-viewings the song grows and indeed becomes one of the highlights. But we shouldn't entirely forget our first impressions of a movie, because most people only see it once. Also the music (not the words of the songs) is quite pedestrian. Oh what Richard Rodgers could have done with these songs! However, there are things in MARY POPPINS that are among Disney's finest, and for todays kids who have the movie on the TV while they do other things, and see it over and over again, they probably turn away during the slow parts and run back to see the beautiful real-plus-animation scene in the park. When I first saw, as a child, SONG OF THE SOUTH, I just couldn't believe how magical and enchanting was the real life Uncle Remus appearing in a cartoon! I fantasized about the world of movies in the future, how things could be "drawn in" so that the characters could do their thing on any landscape or planet. Well, now it's gotten to the point where computerized special effects do all of that, and you can't even tell it's a cartoon. In MARY POPPINS you can tell it's a cartoon, and that is part of its magic.

Summary: A magically wonderful movie!
Review: I loved this movie so much that I was inspired to go and read the book by P.L. Travers. Julie Andrews was born for the role!

Summary: A classic Disney musical!
Review: Everyone knows this film, right? It's essential watching for children of all ages. Mary Poppins is the quinessential magical nanny, and Julie Andrews has become so identified with her performance in this film that most people will always see her as Mary Poppins.

Anyways, I recently purchased the Gold Collection DVD of this classic movie. It is essentially the same as the previous Disney release except for a few points. First, this one actually *has* a few extras, which most of the early Disney DVDs lacked (shame on Disney!). The transfer is the same, but in addition, we now have a documentary on the film, a trailer, a short premiere featurette, and a trivia game. It's still pretty sparse as far as extras go and nothing spectacular, but it's an improvement for Disney. Oh yes, and there are those annoying trailers at the beginning of the DVD that Disney likes to put on all its DVDs. Oh well.

If you have the DVD already, don't bother buying this one. If you don't have the DVD, by all means purchase the Gold collection Mary Poppins. It's a classic film that can be enjoyed by the family over and over again.

Summary: JULIE ANDREWS IN 1ST FILM - AND A MAGIC AL 1
Review: Disney`s best effort with Snow-White, Fantasia, Dumbo, Pinocchio and Cinderella.

This was the last good original musical(unless 1 counts Elvis Presley`s vehicles, but hardly any good) from Hollywood.

With The Wizard Of Oz, Mary Poppins is the most magical film ever produced with just as hummable tunes as "Wizard".

Indeed, "a Mary Poppins" has become a household word meaning you`re prim and proper.

Julie Andrews is a true star and no one has ever been able 2 replace her persona. She IS one of a kind. U really DID deserve that Oscar for Best Actress, Julie. She was also nominated for The Sound of Music and Victor/Victoria.

A MUST-SEE if u haven`t had the pleasure...
