Summary: Excellent collector's edition for Disney fans
Review: The Collector's Edition of Atlantis contains material that every Disney fan/collector will enjoy. It's worth the extra money to upgrade to the collector's edition of this movie.

Summary: Muddled movie, but what a package!
Review: This action-adventure never seems to know if it's meant primarily for teenagers or family audiences. As a result, nothing in this film ever quite works. The suspense fails to build, the action scenes fail to thrill, and the characters fail to make much of an impression. Although the film holds up pretty well on television, it still doesn't amount to much.

The numerous extras on the _Atlantis_ Collector's Edition DVD are well worth viewing, especially since they give an idea of the tremendous creative effort wasted on the film itself.

Summary: I wish more Disney movies were like this one
Review: This movie has some of the most jaw dropping and incredible designs I have ever seen. Mike Mignola was involved in the art designs for Atlantis and it really shows, it looks great. The story is a little lacking though, I think it could have aimed higher with a bigger impact. My complaints are small though this is a refreshing relief from the usual Disney fare. Unfourtunatly I don't think this one got the recognition it deserved, so I would not expect more like it from the Mouse.

Summary: Shoot me now!
Review: I thought Disney Studios hit its nadir with "Pocahontas," but I was wrong. "Atlantis" is pure drivel. There is nothing charming about the character art, though some of the landscapes are pretty. The characterization of the hero and heroine is strictly by-the-numbers. And I never realized how annoying Michael J. Fox's patter can be until I saw this movie! The sidekick characters, such as they are, are anachronistic stereotypes and just plain unfunny. Ugh. I'm a big fan of Disney animated films, but I won't be adding this one to the collection.

Summary: Once is enough
Review: This is probably a decent rental, but I was kind of disappointed after seeing all the previews. The movie opens on the interesting premise of the search for Atlantis, but once it's found the movie becomes just another cartoon.

Summary: Will not play in Toshiba or Honda Odyssey DVD
Review: We have four DVD players. Two are installed on our laptops, one is attached to the TV, and one is in our brand new Honda. It only plays on one of them with no problems.

In our Toshiba DVD player we can watch the previews over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over...... We cannot ever access the menu.

In the Honda DVD player we get an error message so we see nothing. It never runs.

In my laptop, it plays if I coax it, meaning, it locked up twice.

The movie comes with a Disney proprietary DVD viewer so WinDVD does not work. That seems to be the problem in my opinion. I uninstalled and reinstalled twice, wiped everything out of the system to insure the only apps running were Disney DVD so the movie had as much CPU as it needed.

I would not buy this until Disney fixes their movie viewer

Summary: A disappointment
Review: This a very huge disappointment from Disney. I would not reccomend it for kids since its filled with new age ideas, smoking, and innuendo. Its more geared towards older kids, teens and adults. I didn't like that it was filled with many hoopla mumbo jumbo ideas with pagan like themes.

It gives kids the wrong impression and frankly Disney has crossed the line with this movie. I would not reccomend it to anyone that's below 9 years old. Its just not appropriate for little kids, so please keep this on mind parents. I found the story to be lame and shallow in many ways.

Since I don't believe in the beliefs of the new age ideas in this movie it was hard for me to get into it. I felt that it could have been done a whole lot better. Basically all they do is set out on a mission, somoene betrays them and they overcome that. I didn't really like the plot in this bad excuse to make an animation flick. You won't miss anything if you skip it.

Summary: Surprisingly Enjoyable
Review: This movie wasn't the best, but it got pretty darn close. The animation was a nice refresher from the usual Disney fare, if but a bit too dark and foreboding at times. It still retained the fresh Disney feel, and was all-around just a good flick.

Some points I'd like to address. This movie emphasized WAY too much on action scenes and too little on character development scenes. You never really feel that you 'know' any of Milo's crew, or even his friend Kida. The only character who is fully developed is the main one-- Milo. I thought this was kinda unfair, seeing as how Disney could have cut down some of the action time to expand on all the characters' personalities.

Oh, and--- get this!--- people who AREN'T villains actually DIE in this film! INCREDIBLE! I guess it proves that Disney isn't forever condemned to a future of singing flowers and dancing hippos...

I also honestly can't understand all the complaints about a "chain-smoker" being featured as one of the characters in the movie. I mean, maybe I would if it was a character like MILO or someone who was doing the chain-smoking... but it's not. It's just Mrs. Packard, AN OLD LADY. Do you so-called 'wholesome parents' seriously believe that kids who watch the film will instantly go, "I wanna be just like Mrs. Packard! GIVE ME CIGARETTES!!!!"? And anyway, SO WHAT if someone was smoking!? People smoke all the time in real life; I seriously doubt that 'hiding' this fact from your kids is going to make them grow up to be better adults or something. I have a younger sister (aged 6) who could watch Atlantis over and over again without getting bored, and NOT ONCE did she express the desire to smoke after seeing it depicted on the screen. Kids are smarter than that, you know.

OK, all rants and raves aside, this was still one heck of a surprise from Disney. I hope they'll come up with more films like these in the future.

Summary: Not Your Typical Disney Film, but Lots of FUN
Review: Despite the venom spewed forth by previous reviewers, I really think there's a justifiable place in the Disney vault for Atlantis, and I'll admit, it has quickly become an unlikely favorite of mine among Disney animated features. I hold it akin to an animated Star Wars, if that makes sense. With lots of action, no sing-alongs, and a cast of animated adults, this movie will lend itself more towards 8 year-olds than toddlers. I don't see a problem with that as children aren't one age and have different tastes.

This is not your usual, happy-go-lucky, sing-a-long style movie that Disney is known for proliferating. It takes me back to Disney's Black Cauldron in terms of mood and feel. It is somewhat dark, eerie, and action packed. But the characters are fun and interesting, and Michael J. Fox does a great job as Milo Thatch.

It is true that the story is set as a period piece in the early 1900's, but I don't agree with one viewer's gripe that historical accuracy was not maintained. Don't fault Disney for not being a historical educator. They're not! In response to "How are children to know the difference between what is real and what isn't if adults don't show them?", my first reaction was to think who would intrepret animation as reality? It's moving ink! It is not reality! It's entertainment. So what if you cross time periods? Or if the weapons and objects in Atlantis weren't invented for decades afterwards? By this logic, Rambo was a more educational movie because he used the weapons of the time?

And as far as "If you want to teach your children to smoke buy this movie." - Gimme a break. I'd like to believe that parents play a larger role in child development than to blame TV for how their kids turn out.

Great movie though. If you think you'd enjoy the action and adventure of Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark in an animated form, this is for you.

Summary: Won't play on many DVD players
Review: This DVD won't play on Philips or Magnavox DVD players. I've also heard that it won't play on some other brands of DVD players as well. Don't buy or rent this one if you own a Philips or Magnavox DVD player.
