Rating: Summary: Krull to the sounds of Star Trek Review: I am a great fan of Star Trek and I love the Star Trek series, movies and sound tracks.... but when I tried to watch Krull, it drove me absolutely crazy because the entire sound track is nearly 100% the same sound track as Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn, a movie I still enjoy watching. But trying to watch Krull to the exact same music was distracting and maddening. Even if I had not recognized the music, the sound track simply did not fit Krull or anything that was happening on the movie. The music was entirely out of sync and wrong for this movie. I would strongly recommend that the entire sound track on Krull be replaced with a sound track made for it which fits the actions and compliments the movie. If you like Star Trek.... don't watch this movie. The music will drive you up the wall. And it is a shame, because it might be a worthwhile movie with its own unique sound track. It certainly has a plethora of special effects and a lot of work went into creating the sets. With all of the work that has been put into it, I would think it would be worth their while to invest in a new sound track and re-release the film.
Rating: Summary: A good B-Movie Review: KRULL is a fun movie if you are an avid aficionado of the sci-fi adventure-action movies like "Beastmaster", "Conan", "Star Wars" "Star Trek" or "Lords of the Rings", KRULL is not a big budget movie but the script is somehow good in the line of movies like "Legend" or "Willow". The classic battle between good and evil, the prince out to save his princess. The actors aren't well known (but we have Liam Neeson on a small role in here before his now famous days) but that doesn't substracts from the history. This is a good title to share with the children, and it's your average matinee movie, if you don't mind picking up a not so famous movie this one is for you.
Rating: Summary: CONFUSED, CHILDISH MESS Review: Seeing this movie...I am reminded of a movie I saw as a child called Captain Sinbad, with Guy Williams of Lost in Space fame as Sinbad in a made for kids fantasy film. Krull just doesn't know if it wants to be sci-fi or fantasy and combines elements of both into a mess.I've often wondered who was more embarassed by appearing in a bad fantasy movie, Liam Neeson in Krull or Tom Cruise in Legend? Ken Marshall is about as boring as you can get as a fantasy hero. The plot is standard quest fare. Perhaps the worst thing is that the "mythical weapon" in this flick is a glorified boomerang with blades on it. Not exactly awe-inspiring. I'm really surprised at the overall high ratings this movie has received from most reviewers.
Rating: Summary: a fantasy adventure classic... well almost Review: With great fx (long before the computer generated movies came), great cast, pretty leading lady, fabulous settings, impressive costumes, and a well made script - what then is the reason why this movie seemed to lack the spice to land it categorically along with the other monumental flicks? The answer -- Peter Yates. Although not a bad british director himself, KRULL just doesn't fit his forte. Thus, it is the same case for the movie adaptation of J.K. Rowling's (now-classic) HARRY POTTER & THE SORCERER"S STONE, Chris Columbus may have spawned a good game in his stride with Home ALone, but is not the appropriate director to do the very-Britishy folkloric atmosphere of the said flick (he being American (it would've been rather done by Terry Gilliam most fittingly of the Monthy Python siries)) as i've presumed then. Thus, TIME magazine (10/December/2001) appropriately puts it in its review: "This movie about You-Know-Who is missing a sprinkle of you-know-what: what one dared to expect in a wizard's tale. This is a magic act performed by a muggle" :-D Henceforth, KRULL on the other hand would be a very Good item to sit in with other fantasy flicks such as the George Lucas produced WILLOW; DRAGONSLAYER; The Rankin/Bass animation features FLIGHT OF DRAGONS and adaptations of Tolkien's LORD OF THE RINGS; the medieval classic EXCALIBUR; SWORD OF THE VALIANT (starring Sean Connery (the bloody best actor to portray James Bond i should say) as the Green Knight (his movie FIRST KNIGHT is an Arthurian movie that goes so pale in comparison with the movie EXCALIBUR may i say so (sorry for the quite too many parenthesiseses(sic))); LABYRINTH (starring David Bowie and the ever lovable Jennifer Connely), along with the other Jim Henson produced movie THE DARK CRYSTAL; THE PIED PIPER OF HAMILYN (starring Donovan in the title role); HAWK THE SLAYER (w/ Jack Palance as the villain); HIGHLANDER (w/c's such among those flix that should've not have made a sequel (also co-stars Connery)); the first BEASTMASTER film; and the quite mediocre fantasy movie titled LEGEND, which stars ex-Mr. Nicole Kidman - Tom Cruise, with an equally quite pale theme from me favourite band YES. The movie DUNGEONS & DRAGONS however is a disappointment of epical proportions though. Back in Krull to comment further about it... well, do yourself a favour and watch the movie rather, than read this so-called review of mine.
Rating: Summary: KRULL! Review: If you grew up in the 80s and had HBO, it was inevitable that you've seen this film, probably more than once just from the fragments you would catch at any given time of the day. Same goes for The Beastmaster, but I'm reviewing Krull today. I hate to sound repetitive, but this is yet another reason why the 80s are unsurpassed in practically every movie genre. Krull is one of those whacked out sci-fi flicks that you'd never see made today. Only in the 80s did the film companies seem less retentive and would greenlight any crazy idea a writer or director had......and fund it! It's because of these cool people that classics like Buckaroo Banzai, The Ice Pirates and this film were made. Krull's a sci-fi fantasy hybrid with a decent budget. It's the classic good vs. evil story of a king travelling the countryside, picking up odd assorted characters along the way on a search for his stolen bride. You get lots of neat villians and good guys along the way including a cyclops, a magician who (naturally)screws up his spells, an evil woman in a spider web, a yucky reptilian monster guy, and a funky throwing star. It's all in Krull! It also has the classic action movie scene where the entire fortress crumbles after the defeat of the villian, and everyone's dashing to escape. Good stuff. So, if you're reading this and have never seen Krull, slap yourself a few times for being a schmuck, then go rent it or buy it!
Rating: Summary: A Childhood Favorite Review: Krull is a classic fantasy film. I remember as a kid driving my big brother crazy with this movie. I must have watched it about a hundred times. I watched it so many times,my brother even tried to throw it in the garbage once! This film has everything a good fantasy needs,a beautiful princess with long flowing hair,a dashing hero, plus a heroic and triumphant soundtrack. Yes its a love conquers all, battle of good versus evil film. But whats may I ask,Is wrong with that?
Rating: Summary: A Training Manual on A Galactic Scale Review: When defending planets from the still-present power of The Beast, I often use this movie as a sort of training-manual-on-the-fly, showing my people how not to be taken out in the first five minutes of resistance while defending my keep and also helping myself learn the ins and outs of being a hero. That way I can find myself powerful enough to deal with this all-encompassing menace, endowed with the ability to: climb continuous mountains with ease, find powerful items and keep from using them everytime I find myself in trouble and needing to kill a few Slayers, meet and interact with handfuls of criminals that will later become skilled actors and even Jedis, dress to impress, and perfect my flame-handling techniques in case I need some skills because my galactic preplanning fails. The highpoints of this manual deal with Colwyn, owner of a now-ruined castle and husband of a now kidnapped bride, as he tries to win her back and thwart the advances of the Beast and his dreaded Slayers. He plans on doing this by heeding the advice of the Ynyr, a hermitic man that tells him first to rescue a glaive from the heights of badly edited mountain scenes, and then furthers this by picking up a band of followers that have nothing to look forward to save freedom or death. Then its off to get some advice from a blind seer that seems obsessed with the color green (I hear blindness has that affect n seers, though), the widow in the web that keeps some interesting eight-legged company, and finally to horses that run with speeds previously unknown to all save those with automotive transport. All to save the universe, to lose the glaive that I would have kept close at hand, and to get quite a few people killed while trying to save your lady. Now those are lofty goals that even I approve of. Anyone looking to keep their people free or to outfit their kingdom in tight-fitting spandex should look no further than this epic journey. Even if you're looking because of less lofty goals, its still a good purchase. You might regret it if you don't.
Rating: Summary: Lord of the Rings meets Star Wars. Review: Okay the movie might be a little campy, but honestly it is a good movie. It is fun, and while you wait for the next installments of either Star Wars, or Lord of the Rings. Give this one a try. You will love it. The ovies is like Robyn Hood, meets Lord of the Rings, meets Luke Skywalker. I remeber loving it in the 80's and still loving it today. The Best Part of the movie, as always. ( Is the Wizard )
Rating: Summary: So much better than ever given credit for Review: This movie has an interesting plot, good characters, a fun plot, and great adventure. For this movie to work you have to give into it, like any other fantasy world. Are there holes? Sure, just like any fantasy/sci-fi film ever made. If you give into the magic then its a wonderful tale.
Rating: Summary: An oft overlooked and underpraised fantasy epic! Review: When I first saw Krull in the early 80's, I thought it was one of the best sci-fi/famtasy films I had ever seen. Well, I still do. Yes, it is a bit campy... but hell, so is the entire Star Wars series! The cinematography is excellent, and thanks to the masterful score I became a fan of James Horner's music long before Glory or Titanic. I still think the special effects in Krull are some of the best for its time, considering Industrial Light and Magic wasn't behind them. For any serious collector of fantasy films, this is a must-have!
