Summary: Change for the sake of change
Review: OK, it's a good movie. I've seen it three times. But I'm still disappointed with how far it strays from the book. Both FOTR and The Two Towers contain countless deviations, with many of them appearing to be changes just for the sake of change. Some are minor, some are huge. Don't worry, I'm not going to list them.
Also, in the movie Frodo looks about 12 years old. In the book he was 50 when he left the Shire. I know ring bearers don't age much, but c'mon! Couldn't he at least look 33, which was how old he was when Bilbo gave him the ring?

Summary: "...Let's pretend you didn't know the story...."
Review: OK, OK--I didn't read the books! Yes, believe it or not, I made it this far in life without knowing a Hobbit from an Orc! That confession out of the way, let me just say I saw the film as someone who neither knew what parts of the book were left out, nor held the epic in reverence as have so many who know the tales by heart. I have to admit, I came out of the theater with many questions. I also have to admit, I enjoyed the film much, much more than I could have ever imagined!

This is the story of a ring which possesses the power to grant not only invisibility, but also immortality, to its wearer. In return however, the 'One Ring' seeks to corrupt any who stand in the way of its powerful force, and is ever bent on returning to its evil and ancient master, who lost in long ago in wars for Middle-earth.

From watching "Fellowship of the Ring" I understood how Tolkien's deep religious knowledge played out in a complex tale of good versus evil. In a nutshell, it is the search for redemption and salvation by a fellowship of representatives from all creation. It is the search to free a creation which has fallen under the shadow of a lord of darkness.

I appreciated the author's personification of the ill-fated Adam-figure Isildur, who, at the moment of opportunity to forever vanquish the evil influence of the ring, failed to master temptation's enticement. As a result, one man unleashed a force of evil into the world even he could not have imagined. Yet, hope is not lost. Through this man's lineage is a noble and rightful king (Aragorn)--in exile from his homeland, and desirous to join the fellowship and purge evil from Middle Earth.

There is marvelous theology for those who know where to find it in "Fellowship of the Ring", and I can now appreciate how Tolkien's student C.S. Lewis was profoundly influenced to write his Christian allegories "The Chronicles of Narnia". What this film does best is to capture the power of evil, and portray its virulence in seeking to dominate everything it touches. Even a good and noble wizard (Saruman the White) is corrupted by the dark side.

I winced at the deafening hoof beats of the horses of the Ringwraiths, who do the bidding of the evil and disembodied dark lord Sauron the Deceiver. I sat in amazement at the glimpses of the hellish fires of Mordor and Mount Doom where the ring was forgedâ€"and, where also, the ring can only be destroyed. I bordered on vertigo as the fellowship faced unimaginable terrors and evil in the Mines of Moria, and I marveled at the grace of Arwen Evenstar, who not only saved the life of a hero, but whose selflessness gave up immortality for one she loved. Yes, there is wonderful theology here! But ever creeping through the shadows is the eerie and mysterious Gollum, who will have a most unique roll to play.

In summary, it proves true that the less you know about the trilogy, the more you may appreciate this film. It is a tale that will un-nerve you with its sheer volume in places, astound you with its special effects, and in some ways make you wish you'd left the younger kids at home. This is NOT a kid movie. It is a complex, and intricate story of how one of the least, and most innocent of God's creatures (Frodo), attempts to master an evil force that would overcome him, in order to save creation from the darkest evil. It is also the story of friendship and heroism. Good does not win out at the end but neither does evil, and I cannot wait for the “The Two Towers”! I am told that as dynamic as this first saga was, the best is yet to come!

Summary: Not even a fan...but LOVED the extras
Review: OK, so I bought this for my wife as I am not (was not?) really a fan of the books or the cartoon Hobbit movies. I thought the movie was "good" but its the technical mastery of this DVD that I appreciate.

The volume of special features, "making of" shorts and wonderful cast commentaries make for a truly wonderful "geek fest".

As a movie I rate it as good, as a pure technical achievemnet, it gets 5+ stars!!!

Summary: Something Special
Review: Ok, so it wasn't an exact replica of the original. There were significant parts left out, and important characters are missing. All of these things are true. But when I walked out of the theater, I felt the same way as the first time I finished the story. I had been torn from a fantasy world, and my mind took a few minutes to readjust to reality. This film is amazing. It drastically exceeded my expectations. I cannot wait until next Christmas. I will be the first one in line next year. Kudos to Peter Jackson and a wonderful cast, I doubted some of the choices before, but now I realize that's why I don't make films.

Summary: Forever to be a CLASSIC
Review: Ok, the Lord of the Rings-the Fellowship is one of the few movies translated from a classic book to to the screen that I found really good. This movie is simply AWESOME!!! It captures not all, but many of the various messages and symbolism in the books, and manages to add a couple hot guys in there too!! It's just like the best movie in the world!!! If you haven't seen it...I pity your soul. Anyways, one of Julie's famous prophecies--the Lord of the Rings movies will become one of the classic movies for the next 700 years.

Summary: I really like it (...)
Review: Ok, there were things left out of the movie, true. You could compare the movie to the book for hours. but I loved the movie just the same. Yeah, they should've explained it a lil better, but I think the action scenes were good. All I kno is, I wanna see it again. It's a really good movie, I definitely was not disappointed. *Legolas is the best!* hehehe

Summary: LOTR FANS ONLY
Review: Ok, you've seen the movie, you loved it, you want more. Otherwise, you wouldn't be reading this. Anyway, this is a must for fans of LoTR. Basically, it's about a half-hour longer from deleted and extended scenes. If you're getting this for anything, get it for them. The extra footage really makes the film a lot cooler. Some extra scenes include a scene of Bilbo writing his book, the part where Galadriel gives everyone stuff, and a lot more exposition. Each new scene has new score written for it. You know the funniest thing though? It's the little diffrences. A lot of it is extra lines and surplus info, no longer than a minute. But be warned, it has two discs, so you have to switch discs in the middle of the movie. Movie itself gets a 5 out of 5.

But then, there's the special features. These are all original documentaries, and a couple photo galleries. There's a lot of footage that had great special feature potential, but wasn't included. To tell the truth, the features on the un-platinum version were better. Features get a 3 out of 5. There was some good stuff in there.
Both platinum and un-platinum are worth owning. However, since this one is so expensive, if you had to pick one, pick the un-platinum. 'tis all.

Summary: The Lord of the Rings
Review: OK. First let me say that some reviewers, such as "Eric T. Miller" and "Joey" (and there are more, no doubt, which I will not waste my time reading) most obviously simply do not realise the amount of time, effort, and dedication put into this masterpiece. I myself am wary of obsessing with anything, but with LOTR I let myself do so...because it deserves it. I had read the books before the movies had come out - and absolutely loved them, finding them hard to read at first, but after laying them aside for a time, picked them up again and consequently my obsession with the Lord of the Rings began, surprisingly with the books, not the movies. At first, I was not even sure that I wanted to see the movies. Because of many bad experiences of seeing movies which have completely destroyed the beloved book, I did not want to see the same thing happen with the LOTR. But I took a chance - and was more than rewarded. I know that absolute Tolkien purists will find the abscence of Tom Bombadill and the like upsetting, but as for myself I have no complaint. No movie I have ever seen has stayed a true to a book as this has. Seriously, come on. We're talking 3 huge volumes, incredibly complex and detailed. No one can stay completely true to the book without making a boring movie. While some themes and scenes are fine and interesting while reading, they would not survive on screen. This movie far exceeds all my expectations. Would you people please realise the great work that this is? And working Arwen and Aragorn into the story is a stroke of genuis. If this type of movie is not your thing, I won't condemn you because of it. I understand that not everyone finds these sort of movies enjoyable. And that's OK. But please just recognise the work and effort that went into this masterpiece, and stop writing stupid reviews. As for myself, all I have to say is: Peter Jackson, you have my highest respect for this - and Tolkien also - and Lord of the Rings is not just a movie - it's an escape into another world. Lord of the Rings quite simply, RULES. This first installment is amazing, and the extended one blows it out of the water;it is the best...and the special features are both informative, highly interesting, and there are some funny moments with the actors as well.

Summary: this review actually refers to the VHS...
Review: ok. i bought Lord of the Rings on VHS because the movie was magnificent and i did not at the time have a DVD player. Big mistake. The film to tape transfer is terrible and the special effects that in the film were vivid and realistic now look cheap and poorly done. The Riders in the scene with the water horses look like paper cut outs and even the opening sign that says "Lord of the Rings" looks like dull plastic. If you enjoyed to film for the special effects, do not buy this VHS tape. Maybe if you never saw it in the theater or on DVD you wouldn't notice, but overall it is not worth it. It's like they made the VHS crappy on purpose so people would buy the DVD. Now I have a DVD player, and Lord of the Rings on DVD, and am very pleased. But the VHS is a dulled down version that shames the intricacies of the creative process behind the film.
