Review: LORF is a great movie. The best I have seen. For that I was very unhappy when it did not win "Best S. Actor, Ian McKellen" and "Best Picture"
I have read one review that said Peter Jackson nearly changed half of the book. That is true. But it is already long and those missing book parts aren't very impotant.
I was mostly shocked at the opening battle. It was great!
This totally beats Harry Potter.

Summary: initially disappointed
Review: LOTR - Tolkein was a masterful writer ,leading me into a world I had only dreamed of as a youngster. He held me captive with his descriptions of Middle Earth.I was wary of seeing the film mainly because usually,films are nothing like the books.I was initially very disappointed with Jackson's rendition. All of the poetry and magic and courage that sum up the inhabitants of Middle Earth seemed to be forgotten as one important detail after another was left out and/or changed to suit the producer's whim. No Tom Bombadil,no Dark Forest,no mention of how the hobbits were close friends to begin with.Liv Tyler's character doe's not save Frodo,Glorifindel,the Elf lord doe's,as well as the hobbits. And the meeting to decide the fate of the ring was important, as they all came for reasons that made sense to the telling of the tale.I really missed the explanation of their stay at Lothlorien,because Jackson left out the gifts given to them all especially the box given to Sam. Well I know it sounds like I hated the film, but after I had watched it a second time I realized that to include all of these things,the film would have been enormously long. I was truly glad to see that Jackson maintained the integrity of the tale,his attention to other details was good. I was very glad to see that Legolas' character was maintained as he is my favorite. Bravo Orlando Bloom, you seem to be a splendid archer, and you carried the role very well.He was exactly what I pictured the Wood Elves to be. I also think that Frodo's character was well played and true to the tale. To those who think that he resorts to tears far too much,I can only say that they must read the books because he is fighting an inner battle as well as the power of the ring.I have bought the film and will probably buy the next two as well.Here's hoping that Jackson has stayed true in the TWO TOWERS,and RETURN OF THE KING.

Summary: LOTR - the unquestioned movie of the year for 2001!!!
Review: LOTR and Tolkien are two things that I had not been very familiar with. After seeing this movie, I'd have to say that I was thouroughly impressed and definitely left begging for more. This is a wonderful film that I'm sure has sparked interest in LOTR and Tolkien in others like myself. The film is full of breathtaking scenes and backdrops, astounding action sequences, and characters who are portayed perfectly by their respective actors and actresses. The score by Howard Shore was the first thing I bought right out of the movie. It, along with the film, both deserve to win an oscar for best picture and best original score, respectively. I would definitely reccommend this film to young and old, as it is truly a spectacle which all can appreciate.

Summary: Great film in spite of complaints of purists.
Review: LOTR as a series of novels is at times breathtaking, always engrossing, and of course, extremely well written and imaginative. The new film of the first book is also stunning as a film - those who are not too familiar with the books will certainly find it interesting and not too difficult to follow. If you haven't yet seen the movie and are reading some of these reviews, do yourself a favor and note very carefully the spirit of some of the poorer reviews - they are largely complaints that certain portions of the novel had to be omitted or condensed. Now if this "impurity" doesn't offend then go out and see this movie! It is perhaps the best of the genre since the original Star Wars was released in 1977. Certainly nothing else that I can think of comes to mind. (Parents - young children may be frightened by some of the film's elements. You may feel that "any fantasy must be for children" but there are some violent scenes here that will possibly shock you.)

Summary: Perfect 1/3 of a Movie
Review: LOTR has all the makings of a wonderful film; however the movie itself becomes a victim of its own ambition. Jackson crafted a fine film, but the emotional structure is deeply flawed. It's all rising action without a decent climactic moment. This was a necessity to film three movies - but I disagree with those that state LOTR:FOTR as the best movie ever made.Granted, the structure problems couldn't really be solved. However, the fight choreography was very poor in my mind. Full of quick cuts and close ups, it was impossible to get a sense of scope or adrenelin in the numerous fights. The DVD though has a lot of bonus features - however, Jackson should save all this for the eventual box set... but that's just my $.02.

Review: LOTR is a beautifully made, crafted and sculpted film, presented in this unique special edition DVD. The plot sticks faithfully to J.R.R Tolkien's books, and the set pieces and effects are particularly fantastic. Recommended to anyone.

Review: LOTR is the BEST movie ever made. Believe me, because I have seen them all.
For those of us who have read the books, it's a great feeling to finally see what those nasty orcs really look like. The fight scenes with them are ferocious, and they make you want to jump in and bonk some orc heads together.
The acting, special effects, and editing are top notch. Don't listen to what the "experts" say. The film is three hours long because a LOT of things happen in LOTR. You'll feel like you never want the movie to end.
If you can't get enough orc and goblin action, there are a few books with these little buggers in them, including Abacar the Wizard, the Hobbit, and Lord of the Rings (of course)!

Summary: Why LOTR is dull, dull, dull
Review: LOTR is undeniably a spectacle; it's beautifully shot by an accomplished director, and it's clear that no expense was spared, and everyone involved cared deeply about the project. So why was this film so dull? And why did it seem endless from the get go? Because there's nothing, and I do mean NOTHING, going on beneath the surface. LOTR is an idealess wasteland, and the high language and creative geography don't hide the depthlessness of the story for very long. Leaving The Shire for Mordor isn't any more gripping than driving from Cleveland to Cincy unless those locales or the journey are charged with some meaning. Nothing's at stake in LOTR, and as a result, it's a breathtakingly tedious parade of costumes and landscapes. Sure, movies can be escapist fare, and that goes double for any form of fantasy fiction. On that level, LOTR might qualify as mindless weekend fun, except this movie (and its fans) insists that it's filled with deeper meaning. Sorry, but it isn't. For that to be true, LOTR would need stuff like, oh, maybe subtexts, symbols, and metaphors buttressing its story lines. And a point of view wouldn't hurt--LOTR can't jump beyond nerdfest status without saying something about the REAL world, even if speaks though fantasy figures in imaginary settings. But there's none of that in this flick--it's just good guys versus bad guys in the end, ones that aren't particularly interesting in their virtues or vices. I wanted to like this film, and looked for more; my date was smarter, and fell asleep. For an ironic comparison film, look at Peter Jackson's own Heavenly Creatures. It's a terrifically creepy flick, based on a true story about two girls who committed a grisly murder in the 1950's. It's a fantasy film, filled with spectacular costumes and imaginary characters. But it's also about sexuality, sublimation and psychological disorders. And it's got interesting things to say about the use and abuse of fantasy, and about the blissful/terrifying links between infatuation and detachment from reality. LOTR, on the other hand, is all flash and no substance, which is why the most impassioned reviews listed here are about differences in details between the book and the movie, rather than the IDEAS behind Peter Jackson's version versus Tolkien's. So if you like debates about the battle readiness of elves versus hobbits, get the DVD. If you like stories that hit you on multiple levels, skip it.
