Rating: Summary: new technology, new disappointments Review: Is more less? It is with DVD. I bought LOTR Extended Edition expecting that I would be able to watch a full screen version from the wide-screen file on disc. I also thought I could watch the original cut from the extended cut by making a simple choice on a menu. But no. Although the two items I want are subsets of the data on disc, they are not available to me. So I have to watch the 2.35:1 movie in letterbox format, which leaves about 30-40% of my TV screen black. I also can't enjoy the original, more prudent cut. The theatrical version is a more impactful cinematic experience than the meandering extended version. The extended version is a curiosity, not something that will entertain repeatedly. Be aware of these limitations when buying the LOTR EE DVD, and also any DVD product today. It's easy for the hype surrounding DVD to hide basic shortcomings that will only be discovered after you have spent money.
Rating: Summary: Lord Of The Rings: Harry Potter is in BIG TROUBLE Review: Is there anything else about this movie that hasn't been said already? Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring is to our generation as what Star Wars was about twenty years ago. The cinematography and scenery just simply outdoes anything from that OTHER fantasy movie (yes, you know which one it is! HINT: Look at the subject title) and the acting is superb. What is even more spectacular is that they filmed all three parts of the trilogy within 15 months. That is a huge and risky undertaking! This movie may not be true to the J.R.R. Tolkien trilogy, but it does come close. I won't reveal any spoilers about this movie or any information that they left out, but I do recommend to you that you go see this movie and read the books! And when is Lord Of The Rings coming out on DVD? If the movie looked good on the silver screen, I can't wait to see what it will look like on my laptop computer! I will be first in line to purchase the DVD! :-)
Rating: Summary: Terribly over-rated Review: Is this movie good?? Yes! Amazing...no. All this movie really has to offer is the scenery and good special effects. I'm sorry, but that doesn't make the movie. The acting was nothing special, some characters over-acted,it dragged on way to long, at some points it could be painfully boring. What I think happened is that all the uber-Tolkien fans were so excited and just couldn't wait for the release of this film, that when they saw it, they were in denial of how good it wasn't. This film beat out the Godfather in the top 250 list at imdb.com in the first weeks it came out...how?? This deserves at most 30th place.
Rating: Summary: LOTR was the BOMB! Review: It all began last night at 11pm. i gathered up the little woman and we set out on our 45 minute journey to Northern Virginia (springfield) to see the premier of LOTR. We arrived at the theatre appx 11:45, buy our tickets, get concessions and find seats in the theatre. it was a fairly large theatre, seats 500; unfortunately no stadium seating. the crowd was an adult crowd, rowdy, unruly, just like me. after viewing the mandatory promotions and previews, the crowd miraculously went silent. the movie began. LOTR opens with a prologue of how the ring came into being. it soon makes its way to a grand battle on the slopes and adjacent plains of mordor. where the Lord_Sauron(not related to the Lord_feyd) is vanquished. well... we all know the rest of the story. I really enjoyed the movie. The cast is wonderful. the battles are great. the nine riders are fell and gruesome. the hobbits, specially merry and pippen are jolly and funny, not to mention mischeivous. The elves, were just and fair, they looked like a blend of Mr Spock and Tyra Banks ( My idea!!!) The movie for the most part was not a disappointment. the people who worked on this film masterfully gave the magic of lotr form and substance. I was enthralled by the battles, itimidated by the orcs and bad guys, awed by the inhabitants of middle earth and loved the hobbits. My wife, who hasnt read the books, thought it was good too. she says that the battles were vicious; which made it more the cool for me. one of the best IMO was the vicious battle which takes place in the mines of moria, in Khazzad-dum. OMG- just go out and see the movie. i wont spoil it for you. My biggist fear was, like most fans, that I would be disappointed. Some things were different than i would imagine them but i was by no measrure disappointed. if anything, i couldve used more.
Rating: Summary: Amazing Movie Review: It has been at least ten years since I have read the books. When I heard they were making the the movie for it I made it quite intentional to not see any previews for it. I wanted to know absolutely nothing about the movie until I went and saw it. When I walked out of the theater on opening night I was truly awestruck. The scenery in this movie alone makes it worth seeing. The filming was beautiful the settings were amazing and the story line followed the book almost perfectly. Though many were upset about the ending of the movie, I personally enjoyed it since the movie ends exactly where the first book ends.
Rating: Summary: Entertaining and fun Review: It has cinematography and general visuals that are absolutely remarkable. But a bunch of undeserved oscars (best supporting actor, best director, best adapted screenplay) and praise hat seems overlauded. I mean, Ian McKellan is an unquestionably remarkable actor (he's done some great work with Shakespeare on stage) and Peter Jackson's a director who's very talented, and the book it's based upon may be the best work of fantasy since Carrol's Alice books. But . . . In general, I enjoyed it. I left the movie and I was happy, I didn't feel as if I wasted my money. But it doesn't stick in my mind the way some of the other movies I've seen this year have (like Memento and Mulholland Drive). It's at times surprising, at times predictable, and very well made for the action flick that it seems to become. It's a clash of art and action (unfortunately more action than art) Watch it. Be skeptical. The movie's not rich enough to justify a second viewing, but good.
Rating: Summary: And so it begins...... Review: It has earned the praise. Fellowship of the Ring is a triumph. It is a work of passion and emotion. Peter Jackson demonstrates not only a passionate commitment to Tolkien's world but, more importantly, a cinematic vision of his own (as well as the technical skill to realize it). However, it must be said that it's only predictable that many Tolkien fanatics will complain about streamlining. Those that dislike the film because it failed to match their internal visualization of the books are beyond help. But most of us -- both aficionados who aren't blinded and uninitiated viewers who aren't jaded -- will find it glorious entertainment -- filled with plot but surprisingly clear, and even at some points quite moving. Indeed, this is an occasion when the vices of cinematic adaptation - compression and paraphrase - are actually blessings. One simply can't regurgitate passages of writing to the screen and PJ's masterful substitution of words for images all but guarantees to dissipate the thick sonority of Tolkien's prose -- something that has stopped many prospective readers in their tracks. The award winning CGI is awesome -- almost flawless. The thing is, a good filmmaker understands the limitations of CGI and has to accommodate so that the obvious weakness' of computer generated effects are mitigated. As such, Jackson rarely lingers on big CGI shots as well as shrouding much of it in shadows. ...The acting was very, very good. But it was a very good cast: McKellen's Gandalf is good-humored strength incarnate. Wood's Frodo is the wide-eyed innocent who is indeed not like his dear relative Bilbo. Viggo Mortensen is wicked with a sword, and I loved his underplayed, unpretentious air. Sean Astin's self-sacrificing Sam is perfect, Orlando Bloom's Legolas is deadly elegance. "Middle Earth" is beautiful -- the New Zealand vistas are simply magnificent, Andrew Lesnie's award winning cinematography memorable and the production design is second to none...Balrog was awesome: A fiery satanic shadow. Indeed, Moria was beyond words. Whilst wasted, I thought Liv Tyler was simply beautiful and I'm looking forward to seeing more of her. And it's great to see Christopher Lee in a major role once more: Kudos to Jackson for his masterful handling of Middle Earth's evil. I do believe that the fight between Gandalf and Saruman had far more potential than what Jackson settled for. As to the narrative in which all these figures are engaged, it's true that Tolkien's tale is complicated and you can see where Jackson was desperate to include as much of the book as possible. This in fact highlights the films biggest weakness: Jackson rarely spends enough time with a particular scene so that we can take everything in. Hopefully, this will be corrected in the DVD. Another weakness was the Hollywood Blockbuster score of Howard Shore. Yes, he won an award, but his work is shockingly unoriginal. We've heard it all before in countless other films. The more tightly wrapped snobs out there who despise Tolkien see the warm response to "Fellowship" as decadence incarnate, but the fact is, people are not only responding to the awesome setting of Middle Earth, but to Jackson's interpretation of Tolkien's themes which have endured for nearly half a century: we are emphatically and graphically reminded of the enormous power of evil, how it takes many forms and can never be totally destroyed. The film also does away with the endless self-parody and satire that has infected so many films today. Lord of the Rings takes itself seriously. And it should. This is, after all, the blueprint for the modern fantasy. So up next is The Two Towers and should take its place along side "Fellowship" as the best slice of fantasy cinema in Western history.

Rating: Summary: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING Review: It is a fantastic extended edition and it's in DTS sound go and buy it now
Rating: Summary: Loving It!!!! Review: It is a great gift for anyone who is a fan of The Lord Of The Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. The extra footage that wasn't in the movie was great and I really enjoyed it very much. The Aragornath bookmarks were a very special touch. Also, the National Geographic gives a descriptive detailed review of how J.R.R. Tolkien got started with the book and so does the four disc DVD. My child enjoyed it and has become a fan ever since. The extra two DVDs were great because it had lots of information from the cast and crew. I would recommend this to anyone who is a Tolkien fan or a Peter Jackson fan. But it is not for the impatient because the movie does take about three hours. The holographic cards were a special touch to the set. And the free movie ticket to go see the Two Towers was great.
