Summary: Warning-this is taped @ SLP and is a multi-generation copy.
Review: Do not buy this version - get the Warner Brothers version instead.

This version, from Movies on Parade, is not worth buying. The production value is extremely low. The recording is of a very poor quality and portions are inaudible (particularly the critical riddle game with Gollum). At times the video 'skips' and it looks like it was taped on a machine that needed the heads cleaned.

What a shame, as this is a otherwise a reasonable atttempt to take Tolkien's story and put it on the screen, remembering that it was done with 1970's technology and for children.

Summary: Not worth it - taped @ extended/super-long play & inaudible.
Review: Inaudible particularly for Gollum's talking and some of the songs. Glitches appear in the taping including soem sections where the sound drops off for a second in the middle of a sentence. Not re-digitized. Not worth it. Perhaps other reviews refer to a different version of the movie.

Summary: read the book again: the pictures and music are better
Review: Awful. Shabby animation, horrid music (the other reviewers impugn hippies by alleging the music is somehow "hippie-ish").

The story is cut to pieces and the "acting" is elementary school quality. It's obviously edited to be shown as a TV series (read: commercial schlock).

It's a great story, totally trivialized by this crummy production. Avoid at all costs. The single star is the least I can give.

Summary: The Hobbit
Review: This movie is a great animation and deserves 3 stars or more. It went along well with the book , and is great for you and your family. But I must say the book is better. If You do not wish to read the book , which is wonderful , then I recommend you watch The Hobbit on VHS or DVD. It Is Wonderful!

Summary: The Hobbit
Review: This movie is a great animation and deserves five stars. It went along well with the book , and it is great for you and your family. The enemies in this animation are trolls , goblins , wargs (wolves), a nasty Gollum creature , giant spiders , and a dragon called Smaug. And for the heroes in this great animated film are elves , dwarves , men , a wizard named Gandalf , and a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins. The Hobbit animated film is about the wizard Gandalf , the hobbit Bilbo Baggins , who did not like adventures , and thirteen dwarves going on a quest to The Lonely Mountain to reclaim the treasure which Smaug the dragon has stolen long ago. For the greedy dragon (long ago) has destroyed the dwarf kingdom inside The Lonely mountain and killed many of the families of the thirteen dwarves who planned the journey to The Lonely Mountain . So the dwarves wanted revenge and thought it would be valiant to reclaim the treasure of The Lonely Mountain. And Bilbo , a mere hobbit of the west , who hated adventures is chosen by Gandalf the wizard to go on this dangerous adventure as a burglar. But on this adventure lies many perils before the dwarves even get to The Lonely Mountain to defeat Smaug , which would be the hardest of tasks in their quest. But , in my opinion , I must say the book is better. But if You do not wish to read the book by J.R.R. Tolkien , which is wonderful , then I recommend you watch The Hobbit on VHS or DVD directed by Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass. It is wonderful!

Summary: A valiant effort and miserable failure
Review: It's been a long time since I attempted to watch this [film], but not long enough. The author is certainly entitled to his own interpretation, but unless it's a vaguely entertaining one I really wish he wouldn't try to foist it off on others. This movie just plain [is not good] -- annoying animation, obnoxious voices, and worst of all, a complete butchering of the spirit of the book.

Summary: Nice Children's Version
Review: The Hobbit was originally written for kids so it seems right for the movie to be geared toward a young audience. (See the extras on the DVD for Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings for proof.) There are some parts missing which can be expected with almost any film adaptation of a book. The movie still works.

Overall, I felt this was a nice made-for-TV film from the same people who gave us Frosty The Snowman.

The plot is fairly simple. Bilbo joins some dwarves to reclaim their treasure stolen by a dragon named Smaug. Along the way, Bilbo bumps into Gollum and gains The Ring. This does provide some background for the story of Lord of the Rings.

I do find it interesting that it took 40 years for any movie version to be attempted. The book is from the 1930s.

I don't really care for the folk-type music. One reviewer used "hippie" while discussing the music. I'm tempted to agree. I'd say it fits, and the music is appropriate. I feel this way because I ate at a vegetarian place in Houston, TX that had a name inspired by Hobbit culture and seemed to share some aspects of the "hippie" way of life. The books seem to agree with parts of the 1960s culture. I'm not knocking it. Although I don't care for the songs, they fit. I'm sure some people may disagree with this view.

Summary: The movie is a 5-star, the DVD [is not good]!
Review: Let me preface this by saying that I am a HUGE fan of The Hobbit by Rankin/Bass. I own it on VHS and have watched it over 100 times. It ranks among my favorites of all time. That's the VHS version. Now let's talk about the DVD version. It [is not good]! Buy The Hobbit on VHS but avoid the DVD version. How can this be you ask? Let me answer that by quoting the letter I wrote to Warner Bros about the DVD:

"Dear Sir or Madam:

"I have been a huge fan of the Rankin/Bass production of "The Hobbit" since it was first shown on television in 1977. As soon as it was available on VHS, I bought it. I have watched it well over 100 times. I know every word of dialog and every bit of the music. It ranks among the very best animated films ever.

"So imagine my delight when I learned that it was available on DVD - finally!

... I bought the DVD anyway (after a long wait and a lot of pondering) in hopes that perhaps the problems had been addressed in a newer version. Much to my dismay, the problems are even worse than the reviewer lead me to believe. It sounds to me like the original sound-effects track is completely missing. To compound such an egregious omission, new sound effects have been plopped in that do not remotely mesh with the original soundtrack.

"This is outlandish! This is not just incomprehensible but reprehensible! I cannot possibly express to you the degree of disappointment, nay anger, I feel over this. You cannot possibly have a valid reason for such foolishness. At the absolute least, you should have simply released an unchanged version of this excellent film on DVD with some attempt at enhancing the image and sound quality.

"I was eagerly awaiting the DVD release of "The Hobbit." I am incensed,...

To sum up: I love the movie (5 stars). Get it on VHS (5 stars). Avoid the DVD version like the plague.

Summary: A good, family adaptation of a classic story
Review: The film is an excellent adaptation of Tolkien's excellent work. Aparently the production staff thought a lot over before they cut out parts from the book (very few parts were left out). Although Glenn Yarbrough's music does have a hippie-like feel, the matching of Tolkien's poetry to music is stupendous. I find this movie to be a classic and suggest it highly to any family who wants a wholesome, yet not completely sugar-coated, movie. For you hard-core Tolkien fans out there: Give it a look at; it will give you another example of how dramatists have portrayed Tolkien's Middle-Earth.
