Rating: Summary: Guilty pleasure at its best Review: As I was scanning thru Amazon.com and randomly typing in movie titles that I was hoping would pop up with a near future release date, I started giggling like a girl when I saw that Beastmaster was finally being released on DVD. I grew up watching this movie on HBO, and up until now TBS in a very crude edited form. This was a purchase I made with no second thought. First off the movie looks and sounds great. Included are tons of extras that are worth the inexpensive price alone. This is a must buy for fans of this movie and genre. Money well spent. Dar lives!
Rating: Summary: Awwww. . . aren't animals cute? Review: I first saw "The Beastmaster" when I was only 4 or 5 on a [poor] taped copy. I didn't have much of the diologue and a lot of important stuff was cut. Even so, it became one of my favorite movies ever. The casting was excellent, the story was well written, and the animals were just plain cool! I'd recommend this film to anyone who wants a good time.
Rating: Summary: A Great Fantasy Film Review: Finally, this 80s fantasy film is on DVD! A must have...
Rating: Summary: This great 'B' Movie is a guilty pleasure Review: No one is ever going to accuse The Beastmaster of being one of cinema's crowning achievements, but it is an entertaining bit of escapism. It stands side-by-side with Flash Gordon (1980) as my favorite 'B' movie, although Flash Gordon is much more overtly campy. Make Moses look like Conan and act like Dr. Dolittle, and you've pretty much got the plot. Marc Singer makes a great protagonist - his physique is only a hair less imposing than Arnold's, and he's a heck of a lot better actor. I'd call this the best fantasy movie ever made, but that's kinda like giving out an award for the least smelly pair of unwashed feet. Turn off your brain and let yourself enjoy this one.
Rating: Summary: Great DVD Review: I just realized that I have never seen this movie in a theater. I was introduced to it on videotape, and recently I bought a VHS copy just to have another look at handsome Marc. (He really IS handsome!) Well, the DVD just blows all the tapes away. For starters, there's a super Dolby sound-track, formerly heard only over tinny TV speakers. The picture quality is superb as well. So I guess my VHS tape goes in the trash...I might be able to find someone foolish enough to buy it, but it would be wrong! :-) Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: It is better than cats, I will see it again and again Review: There is something magical about this movie -- no matter how many times you have seen it, you are always ready to see it again. By now it has probably built up more airtime than any other movie on USA and TNT, but rather than having to wait for one of their frequent showings, you can own it and watch it on your own terms. Uncut and without commercials too! Marc Singer is one of the great low budget actors. I really think he does a good job in most of the movies I have seen him in. As the Beastmaster, he is incredible. It is sort of a Dr Doolittle the Barbarian, complete with fighting ferrets, a hawk, a "black panther", and the Beastmaster being born from a cow. The action and stunts are really quite good. OK, this movie is a bit goofy, but it is so fun to watch! Do not hesitate, buy it now!
Rating: Summary: I Have My Eyes...I Have My Cunning...And Now I Have Strength Review: The Beastmaster is a cult favorite that was a modest success in its initial release, but found an audience through home video and repeat (and I mean repeat) TV viewings. HBO doesn't stand for Home Box Office, it stands for "Hey, Beastmaster's On!" - Dennis Miller Called a Conan the Barbarian ripoff, even though it was released shortly after that film which would've made it impossible to copy it, The Beastmaster stars Marc Singer (V: The Miniseries, Beastmaster II & III) as Dar, the last surving member of his tribe, who has the power to communicate telepathically with animals. His sidekicks include a black eagle (really a hawk), a black panther (actually a Bengal tiger painted black) named Ruh, and two cute ferrets named Kodo & Podo. They're on a quest to save the lovely slave girl, Kiri, played voluptuously by Tanya Roberts (Sheena, A View To A Kill, TVs That 70's Show) who also happens to be the cousin of the son of a king imprisoned by the evil Maax, played with an added beak nose by Rip Torn (Men In Black). The film blends a good amount of adventure, action, drama, romance, and heart to make any moviegoer satisfied. But my personal favorite scenes involve Dar playing with his animals (especially Kodo & Podo). Marc Singer is truly an animal lover who cares for them with honesty and sincerity, which gives the movie it's added zeal. Throw in John Amos as Seth for dramatic acting effect and you've got a perfect movie! Gotta love those creepy Birdmen as well as the evil Jun Horde! The DVD Special Features are pretty good. You of course get the film in it's original widescreen aspect ratio (1.85:1), which is also enhanced for 16x9 TVs. There's an audio commentary by co-writer/director Don Coscarelli (Phantasm 1,2,3,&4) and co-writer/producer Paul Pepperman (Phantasm) which is informative but lacks in part due to both men not talking enough about Marc Singer or Tanya Roberts, and more about how disappointed they were in those bad effects shots (the Jun Horde army riding in the distance and the black eagle having to carry the little girl in mid air) and how they got the animals to do their work (FOOD!!). There's also an added bit of Behind the Scenes Home Movie footage with both Don & Paul providing commentary. Plus you get the Theatrical Trailer, original production art, poster still galleries, Talant bios and a really nice 16 page booklet with sketches and liner notes. And for those who don't know, there's a great "easter egg" hidden feature of the cut love scene between Dar & Kiri. Just click on "Extras" at the main menu, then once you're there go down to "Main Menu" and go right. When you hit enter you'll see the "Eye Ring" come to life and then the bonus scenes will begin! The Beastmaster - A Cult Classic! "I see through their eyes...they see through mine. They know my thoughts...I know theirs" - Marc Singer as Dar
Rating: Summary: My Favorite Movie Of All Time Review: This movie has still remained my favorite movie of all time. I would watch it every time it came on TV. I know all the lines to the movie and must have watched this movie about 50 to 60 times. Finally, it comes to DVD. It comes just in time for Christmas. This movie is a must stock-stuffer especially for those in their upper 20's, early thirties.
Rating: Summary: YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Review: I couldn't believe it, when I was walking through the store the other day and saw this on DVD. I watched this movie all the time growing up and didn't have to think twice about picking this up. The DVD is excellent quality and has great features. If you have seen this movie then you know you want it and if you haven't well give it a chance, it is very well done and one of the better movies in this genre.
Rating: Summary: The Ultimate Ferret Movie! Review: As a ferret owner, The Beastmaster has always had a special place in my heart. Sure, there are ferrets in as diverse a lot as Mars Attacks, Kindergarten Cop and Starship Troopers, but The Beastmaster has two of the cleverest and best trained ferrets in movie history. No gratuitous ferreting here! They are absolutely essential to the storyline. Marc Singer and Tanya Roberts are okay as humans go, butbuy this for the ferrets.
