Rating: Summary: Jennifer Connelly, as a young girl! Review: My wife showed me this film, made in the same pattern as Dark Crystal, to prove that muppets could be serious actors. Actually, I think she's hung up on the Goblin King, but I can't find fault with that -- he's cool, does this amazing trick with crystal spheres, and walks through an Escher world with the right regard for gravity.Me, I just noticed that Jennifer Connelly was pretty good even back then. I had no idea she'd been in movies this long! And, when we heard that Hoggle was hiding out in the lost luggage depot (there is a store in Alabama that buys luggage that never gets claimed or returned to the right people that managed to get a Hoggle muppet that stays in permanent display in their museum of the weird) I just had to watch it again. The DVD is a really good transfer, and the audio quality is standard DVD fare. I just wish there were the special tracks that other DVDs have, but maybe they'll release a new print in the future and make us all rush to buy it again! I know I would!
Rating: Summary: It's only forever Review: Labyrinth is a tremendous amount of fun! I dare you to watch it and not enjoy it. It's fun, colorful, and lively. Great for the kids and Bowie fans.
Rating: Summary: Captivating. Review: I first watched Labyrinth when I was about seven, by accident..on London's BBC1. Its memory sketched in my mind ever since, I bought a copy of the video, ten years later. Basic plot: Teenage and immature girl wishes her baby brother to be taken away by the Goblin King, then when it actually happens, she freaks and takes up the King's challenge to battle through his winding and twisting Labyrinth to get to his Goblin City and claim her brother back. Makes sense, right? Well, not really. But then again, the moral of this story is "nothing is as it seems, so don't take anything for granted." I guess that goes for the plot as well. It does has promise at the beginning, but seems to almost spin out of control towards the end. But don't get me wrong - I'm not dissing the movie. Extraordinary puppeteering and great songs make up for the so-so plot and somewhat half-hearted acting performance by David Bowie. Jennifer Connelly is great as young Sarah, although the fact that she was supposed to play a 14-15 year old totally passed me by (she looks about 21 in the ball scene). All in all, a pretty good movie and an even better soundtrack! P.S. After watching this film more than five times you may end up striking conversations with people that start with "..you remind me of the babe..."
Rating: Summary: A MAZE OF WONDERS! Review: This movie is a timeless classic. I first saw it on its theatrical release and still love it as much now as I did then. Its fantastic characters and enchanting sets make this a beatiful and magical tale, which could only be created by the artistic genius of Jim Henson's workshop. Now with this Dvd release, the film has been given a new lease of energy. The improved picture quality really emphasises the films gorgeous colors, really bringing to life the action. The script is blessed with the fantasy of the 'Dark Crystal' (an equally brilliant movie) but with the added mayhem of the Muppet show,it is far more more light hearted. As is standard with Jim Henson movies, there is a wonderful mixture of characters, which interact together brilliantly. The acting may not be the best, but it is important to remember that Jennifer Connelly who plays Sarah (the lead character)was only 14 when she made this movie and is having to act with puppets which can't be easy. The great David Bowie gives a convincig performance as the goblin king, providing musical interludes, which admittedly, I found somewhat tedious as a youngster but enjoy now. All the elements blend to make a lively, innocent adventure movie which will be enjoyed by all ages. The Dvd also provides a wonderful trove of extras, including a delightful 'making of' documentary which gives some really interesting insights to the movies creation.
Rating: Summary: This movie's only redeeming aspect are its sets. Review: Everything else about this movie is just bad. David Bowie was a horrible choice to play the bad guy! He can't sing worth beans! His voice sounds like a frog with a flu! And the choice of the actor for the main girl was less than admirable. She did a sub-par job. The sets in this movie had a great fantasy look, and the puppeteering was fabulous! But everything else, including a rather sappy screenplay, detracts from it and leaves it in the dust. Kids will enjoy it, but I'll never waste my time watching it again.
Rating: Summary: Simply magical... Review: This is a great fantasy adventure! One of the things I liked most is the star being a girl, rather than a boy. She makes all the hard decisions and does all the right things to get her baby brother back after she, in a moment of frustration, allows him to be kidnapped by the Goblins. David Bowie as the Goblin King is wonderful and does a great job. The puppets are also great and very believable. I loved this movie.
Rating: Summary: Lotsa fun! Review: I was ecstatic when this movie was re-released! This is one of my favorite movies from childhood, and I still love it now. David Bowie is great as the enticing but evil goblin king. Jennifer Connely at first is whiny, but soon gets better. Love the songs. The final face-off is really good...parallels the temptation of Jesus. Lots of fun stuff in the labyrinth and classic triumph over evil.
Rating: Summary: Lost in the Labyrinth Review: A dreamworld is a place where the mind can let go of its mortal responsibilities, and simply escape and enjoy its new-found freedom. The mythical dreamworld that is created by Jim Henson and his son in the Labyrinth, is an absolutely timeless piece of work. The way that the unique muppets each interact with each other and the live actors, (in some cases the puppets are live actors as well), is fantastic. The style that is presented in this movie is one that is not likely to be paralleled in the near future, the creative genius is Jim Henson was a very unique talent. The DVD version of this movie also contains a very interesting extra feature on the Making of the Labyrinth, which has inredibly neat close-ups on how the puppets were generated and run.
Rating: Summary: An unsung classic Review: I loved this movie, even if some of the scenes are a bit cheesy. The puppets are cool looking and funny, Bowie is awesome, and the music is catchy yet entertaining. There's book called "The Goblins of Labyrinth" with funny little bios of some of the goblins you see in the movie, and even some you don't. Also, the movie was written by a member of Monty Python, so it has to be good! BUY THIS FANTASY CLASSIC NOW!
