Summary: Heart Felt but Slow Moving
Review: This movie was one of the greatest movies that was released in the eighties. Now as a parent, I tried introducing my four year old daughter to this movie. She had no interest in it at all. As I watch today, I did notice slow moving plots in the beginning. After the first half hour it becomes more entertaining. I do not recommend this movie for kids with short attention spans.

Summary: A kids' movie with a PLOT!!! How shocking!!!
Review: Unlike the typical Disney animated fare that runs far too saccharine for my tastes, An American Tail delivers. It's a feel good movie within a complex plot that does not leave me, a non-parent (with small nieces and nephews to care for) wishing for more popcorn and a good book.
I disagree with the crop-circle reviewer below; this is not a scary movie for smalls. My two and a half year old nephew was entranced by the bad cats and rats as well as the good creatures. He, unlike certain reviewers, has realized what fantasy is and how entertaining a good thrill can be. (He also likes Finding Nemo, with its large bodycount, The Nightmare before Christmas, and Shreck, with its scary scenes.)
As a child psychologist, I think An American Tail has a lot to offer a child - an allegorical look at a painful and sometimes scary part of American and world History, a way to relate to ancestors who immigrated under less than ideal circumstances, a representation of a warm and loving family going through hardship and adversity. And it's well done, the animation is sharp and clean, the music and the dialogue are entertaining and nothing will give you a cavity. This is one of the best childrens' films I've come across in a long time.

Summary: One of Don Bluth's animated masterpieces
Review: When I started with a particular interest in animation around mid-1993, this co-production of Steven Spielberg and master animator Don Bluth really made me go out of my head. Can't tell exactly why - it simply has everything that appeals to me: great character design, color palette, a great attention to detail etc. So much so I was compelled to write the guys at Amblin Entertainment to congratulate them for such a great, great flick! Needless to say I hunted for a lot of related memorabilia afterwards. Anyway, this is indeed one of Don Bluth's finest animation masterpieces (along with his other film, "The Secret of NIMH") that shows their technical and developing artistry at its true best. Too sad I can't say the same of the other films released after "The Land Before Time". I'd give it 10 stars if there weren't only 5 :)

Summary: This was my movie as a child
Review: When I was a little bitty kid back in the day (around the late 80s and the early 90s) I loved this movie so much. Everyday I came home from kindergarten I watched this in the late afternoon. I used to sit on the living room carpet, back against the couch and sing "Somewhere Outthere" over and over and over again. The movie was just good to me. I adored it. If I have kids, I would show them this movie because it's touching and it's universal. Recommended.

Summary: Spanish edition - ¡Increíble!
Review: While in Acapulco, I went into a large U.S.-based store and found a wealth of favorite movies in Spanish at great prices. My husband first was introduced to this wonderful story as "Un Cuento Americano" (An American Tale - the pun doesn't work in Spanish) and it quickly became one of his favorites to watch and share with friends. The translation is fantastic! As a sometime translator, I am very picky about how such work is done. Music and comedy are both notoriously difficult to translate well, but somehow these good folks accomplished the task with style, even finding substitute vocabuWary for a certain chaWacteWs speech impediment. Likewise, the singers and speakers for the Spanish version are well cast; so often the voices for dubbed versions lack the charm of the originals, but here they've done quite well. ¡Pruébala -- Te gustará a ti también!

Summary: A true classic
Review: Wow. This is one of those animated movies you won't soon forget. With a wonderful score by James Horner, great story, and admirable characters, this is right up there with Disney's best. Basic plot: Boy gets separated from his family on their way to America by boat (in the early 1900s?) and must find his way back to them. On his journey, he meets new friends and enemies in one grand adventure in New York. Oh, did I mention the main character and his family are mice? Anyway, it's a good movie. Watch it and enjoy.
