Summary: A truly beautiful movie.
Review: However much this is over-said, this simply IS the type of movie that you love or hate.

Many people see this expecting something completely differenent and are inevitably dissapointed.

This movie is fantasy. It is pure, simple fantasy. The cinematography is both beautiful and startling... as in any dream.

This movie asks for the most meagre of belief suspension - and still there are those that don't even *try* to understand.

From the breath-taking direction, cinematography and choreography to the wonderfull acting, script and score. There is simply no fault to be found in this masterpiece.

I use that term sparingly because I understand how often it is unfairly dished out.

While I loved Gladiator for what it was, this was simply the better film. There is no point in complaining now - but it might still serve some purpose to say so.

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon walked away with 4 Oscars and 10 Nominations. It *should* have walked away with 6, adding Best Picture and Best Visual Effects.

If you can even put in the slightest amount of effort into this film - it will reward you handsomely.

Also, to lay to rest any concerns. There is no lip synch problem with this movie. Either you watched the dubbed version (which is a complete travesty in itself) or you have a faulty copy.

All the actors in this movie, including Chow-Yun Fat actually spoke the original language. There never was any dubbing.

The dvd does have its faults (most notably the over edge-enhancement in the video transfer)... but it is adequate. A dissapointment considering how new and successeful the film is... but adequate by any other standards.

Summary: Crouching and Hiding away from this movie!
Review: OK- so everyone thought this was a great movie- I bought it, popped some corn and settled into enjoy it. I hated it. It was long, boring, and the plot was very thin. As for all the hype- what were they thinking? I am not stupid nor do I watch trash so I had high hopes for this one. I was very disappointed.

Summary: Surprisingly Good
Review: My sons finagled me into renting this, and I was pleasantly surprised. I expected yet another mediocre martial arts film, and found instead a solid story (or rather, two interwoven) combined with ethereal photography and hauntingly beautiful music. The acting performances are solid. We saw the dubbed English version, but the dubbing was so well done that it was practically seamless -- the words matched the mouths most of the time, and the inflections were natural. All in all, this is one of the best pictures I have seen in a long while, and I consider the time (a little over two hours) well spent.

Summary: Get over the wire-fu and this movie is for you!
Review: This movie is simply beautiful. The wire-fu (martial arts using hidden wires to exaggerate the moves) can be distracting, but once you accept the movie for what it is you can overlook the ridiculous and enjoy this movie. The charcters have a legendary feel to it and I liked that very much. The English subtitles can be easily read and do not distract from watching the action. I did not view the English dub of this movie, but I can see how silly it may look when combined with the wire-fu. This is a wonderful movie to view with the English subtitles and probably a disasterous movie to watch with the English dub. However, the soundtrack is very impressive. The drum rythyms enhance the action sequences very well. The only complaint I have is the ending scene. I was not satisfied with the conclusion because it felt like it was a cheap and simple way to wrap up the production. I believe "Gladiator" was able to win the Best Picture Academy Award over "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," simply because the "Gladiator" ending was not so disturbing or confused. Watch the movie and you may share my criticism. Still, the movie is very entertaining and definately worthy of repeat viewings!

Summary: People Who Like Pretentious Commentary Will Like This Movie
Review: What a waste of 2 hours of my life. I went to the theater expecting something grand and might as well have rented Jackie Chan's "Drunken Master."

I don't get why this was so great, but I presume some pretentious boor will tell me why I was supposed to like it in a later post.

Trust me, though, there are better ways to spend 20 bucks than on this DVD.

Summary: Great mix of martial arts and storytelling!!!
Review: CTHD was one of the finest martial arts films I have seen recently. The storyline was enthralling, the dialogue well written, and the action scenes, to put it simply, were amazing! Another credential this film boasts were the academy awards that it won. I first saw Michelle Yeoh in Tommorow Never Dies and she played a good supporting role to 007. However, she assumes a lead role in this film with Chow Yun Fat which is also expertly done. If you enjoy a mix of action and storyline, I highly recommend this film. Get the DVD. You won't be disappointed with all it's menu features.

Summary: Vastly overrated
Review: This movie is about nothing: it has a meager plot that twists and turns in fits and starts. It showcases improbable martial arts activities against a backdrop of politically correct gender equity. As a travelogue, it contains about fifteen minutes of interesting footage. As a political tract, it begs for a fifteen minute rebuttal. As a movie, it's impossible to watch.

Summary: Almost perfection!
Review: I don't see how this movie didn't win best picture!

This movie combines spectacular special effects(the fight scenes may be even superior to "Matrix"), beautiful scenery(even the desert) and a strong, albeit convoluted plot!

I'm going to watch it again with the commentary turned ON, to hear what the director and others have to say,

Summary: Worth owning and reviewing
Review: I am pretty choosy when it comes to purchasing movies. It has to be something I would enjoy watching at least several times. When I saw this movie in the theatres I knew it was a must-own. The DVD is great for slowing certain action segments down to the frame by frame view. Even if you are not used to the Hong Kong martial arts genre, as I am, you'll like the pace, the fighting, the plot, the strength of acting, and admire at least one of the main characters. Additionally the backdrop and cinematography are exquisite. And finally, if this matters to you, the subtitles are a far cry from previous Hong Kong film translations or dubbings (which are horrendous but funny).

Summary: What's all the fuss about?
Review: I am sorry, but I was totally disappointed with this film. I expected so much more after the academy award winnings and the great reviews. It might be spectacular for film people, how it's done, etc. but for me, well, it simply was a bit boring, nothing much happened, and the story didn't grab me at all. I much rather see a film like Matrix or Titanic, now there is a story behind to puzzle your mind. And it didn't even have a happy end either, no end at all, really....another DVD that won't be watched again...
