Summary: Disney: Put this film on DVD!
Review: More than four years ago I rented the VHS tape of Kiki's Delivery Service, and there was an ad for Castle in the Sky before it. It was listed as "coming soon."

Since then, I've gotten the Japanese version of Castle in the Sky on DVD, and I love it. However, I'm still baffled by the fact that Disney has paid professional actors to voice the characters and gotten the film prepared for release in the US -- even advertised it -- and has since then just sat on it.

It's almost criminal to hold such great films as Nausicaa, Castle in the Sky, and Pon Poko in your possession and not share them with the English speaking world.

If and when they see the error of their ways and make this film available, do yourself a favor and buy it. We need to let the media juggernauts know how much we love Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli.

Summary: Castle in the Sky
Review: This is a fantastic adventure by a boy and his girlfriend whom he meets as she floats out of the sky suspended by the power of a blue mysterious crystal which she wears around her neck. I haven't been able to understand the dialoge since it's all in Japaneese without English subtitles and I've been anxiously awaiting this film dubbed in English as was promised in 1999 on the previews at the beginning of the Kikki's delivery service VHS Movie. It looks like this boy knows something about this city in the clouds and is determined to find it. The girl and her mysterious blue crystal is connected to the city somehow and the bad guy--driven by his desire to aquire the power of the blue crystal kidnaps the girl and does evenually find the floating Castle in the Sky-- Disaster follows but the girl and the boy escape death with the help of some pirates they'd befriended earlier in the film. It was neat watching it in Japaneese but please -- WE NEED IT IN ENGLISH !!!

Summary: Laputa, a colurful adventure
Review: Laputa is not so easy to get a hold of from here in sweden. I purchased the Studio Ghibli archives and I love it. The menu on japanes is a bit tricky but whats that when you have 12 really good animes.
Laputa Castle in the sky is one of the materpieces from Hiayo Miyazaki. It's beautifully animated and it is a great visual experience. It's a story about two kids whitch roads comes across by accident and from there a great adventure begins. The caracters are superb you feel whit them, you fly whit them. It's a story filled whit mystery, action and courage and like in most of Hiayo Miyazaki's storys it's nature plays a great part in the story.

Well i can just say that it's a great anime, one the best, so if you somehow overlooked this one make sure you go out and see. You cant be disapointed. Have fun.

Summary: Miyazaki's best
Review: This is by far my favorite film by Miyazaki, and i've seen all of them except Spirited Away. Disney finished this dub nearly two years ago and since its taken them this long to set a release date (mainly because Studio Ghibli requested that.) Disney better have stuffed this DVD with a bunch of extras. In fact it should be a 2 DVD set. One disc with the New Dub and the other with the Original Japanese soundtrack, with original music that hasnt been altered or changed like they did in the new Dub. If Disney decides to change the music in the original japanese track too, then i'd have to give this movie a 1 star.

Summary: Laputa - castle in the sky
Review: About time this masterpiece was re-released! Haven't seen this since i was a kid but it leaves a lasting mark on my mind. It was this and 'Nausicaa of the vally of the wind'even more so that started my love for manga films. The Japanese sentiments are strange to someone new to this genre as Miyazaki doesn't have a true hero in any of his films and as with most Japanese stories good guys have a viscious streak in them just as bad guys have a heart (unless they're demons). Laputa isn't quite as deep as Nausicaa so makes a great start for new comers and though aimed at children has enough in it for the adult. If you enjoyed kikis delivery service then this will be one of your favorites.

Review: I first watched this film was i was about six, the original 'Laputa'(apparently its a swear word in spanish so disney have dropped it) was my favorite at the time. I'm really glad that it has been re-released so kid can see it now as it will be a great breath of fresh air from the rubbish that american producers fill their minds with. Don't know whether it will keep the original japanese style of animation or if its got the disney bubble style but never the less i can't wait to see this film again. Hope that the sucsess of this will provoke mr Miyazaki to PROPERLY release Nausicaa again.

Summary: Laputa: Fortress in the Sky
Review: When I saw Hayao Miyazaki's "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Winds" ("Warriors of the Wind" is a re-title for the English translation) I thought it was a stunning tour de force, surely the greatest animated feature of all time. But, two years later at a sci-fi con in Seattle, I saw a grainy Nth generation VHS copy, untranslated, of the most incredible epic fantasy EVER. I'm convinced that "Laputa: Fortress in the Sky" is his magnum opus.
Mr. Miyazaki rarely makes things as simple as black and white, good and evil. His villains are rarely monsters; they are often execptional people driven by ambition or tragedy to do terrible things. In other circumstances, they could be heroes. "Laputa" is a story of ambition and innocence, greed and compassion, high adventure and dark conspiracy. A soulless machine made to destroy cities can find redemption, and a child holds the key to salvation or holocaust. If you want to see what animation can do, this is the one to see.

Summary: Winsome fantasy
Review: "Castle in the Sky" is a masterpiece of one of Japan's finest filmakers. There is a simple artistry to Miyazaki's stories. This is a children's film, but it is in the tradition of children's stories that appeal to all ages. A rare, pure fantasy, the film has the same magic as "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves" and other early Disney films.

I first saw this movie when it was released in US theaters as "Laputa the Floating Island." The mythical floating island of Laputa is taken from Swift's "Gulliver's Travels." Like Swift, Miyazaki cloaks a political statement with a fantasy, giving deeper meaning to his story. Environmentalism has always been central to his films, and "Castle in the Sky" is no exception.

Visual, the film is a literal flight of fancy. Much of the film takes place in the air. Air pirates travel in unwieldy flying machines. Giant dirigibles sail the skies. Travel by kite is an acceptable option. The animation is of the highest quality, as is the sound and acting.

The story may seem familiar to followers of animation. Miyazaki also work briefly on the script of "Nadia: Secret of Blue Water" using some of the same concepts. The story was also adapted by Disney as their film "Atlantis," sending the characters underground instead of up to the sky. However, "Castle in the Sky" is the story in it's original, best form.

I cannot recommend this film enough.

Summary: the essence of adventure...
Review: I first saw this film whilst skiving off school and afterwards I didn't want to go back...

This breathtaking story follows of a young boy forced to become a man through the harshness and realism of life on your own. When he encounters a sweet a innocent girl they embark on adventure any childs imagination would be proud of. An enthralling tale of pirates, secret agents, mystery, love and courage makes this the stuff dreams are made of... and to an eight-year old it's pretty cool.

I only feel sorry for those who missed out on seeing this as a child, but it's never too late when you're young at heart...
