Rating: Summary: Phooey to the critics! Review: This delightful film is universally lambasted by critics--heaven forbid people enjoy a movie about sweetness and good triumphing over evil! Especially one that has a plot that I can follow on the first viewing! Well, phooey to them! This movie is a creative masterpiece. In the fairy-tale land of Not-Named, Mia Sara plays the innocent princess Lily, who spends her time romping in the woods with the forest boy Jack, played by Tom Cruise. Meanwhile, in the pits of a hellish dark castle, Tim Curry plays the demonic devil Darkness, who seeks to shroud the world in eternal night and rule over it. But he is prevented from doing so because of a pair of unicorns keep the world stable. So he has his goblins (yecch, they're disgusting!) follow Lily and Jack to where the unicorns are playing, and then manages to hack off the horn of one of them. Lily has been captured, and Jack is left in a hellish winter wasteland, feeling guilty. He teams up with a bunch of elven creatures and fairies to rescue Lily and--of course--save the world. The end scenes are simply stunning. Okay, so the dialogue is as cheesy as bad parmesan. So Tom Cruise doesn't wear pants in a blizzard. So Tim Curry is wearing fake muscles and giant horns. So what? All of the elaborately delightful sets, the dialogue, the showers of petals/snow/other--it's all wonderful! All of it fits with the misty plotline and love of beauty that the director CLEARLY had. You can only enjoy this movie if you don't expect an intellectual experience, sort of like watching "Princess Bride" or "Star Wars." There's minimal violence and no sex or nudity (except a REALLY plunging neckline that Lily wears at one point), but some scary things are so well-done that they might well scare your kids silly: Tim Curry, despite his suave evilness that kicks all Disney villains around, might scare them with his booming voice and devil-physique; the hideous swamp-hag; the zombie-things; the writhing half-dead human; and the endless parade of hideous goblins. However, if your kids can handle the ickier parts, this is a better-than-average movie for them to watch--good triumphing over evil may sound trite, but this movie makes it beautiful.
Rating: Summary: Legend- is a legend in all rights! Absolutely the best! Review: Ok to clear up the fact that this movie does not contain a devil, that big guy with the horns? well that's Darkness or Big D, lol. He does pray to MotherNight and his Father. Absolutely, my favorite movie. Everytime I watch it (and I've seen it over a hundred times) I always discover something new about the movie. Tis a wonderful movie when it comes to visual stimulance! Definitely one to watch with a group of friends.
Rating: Summary: A good focus on what the world may have looked like then. Review: Legend, the perfect movie for someone who loves mythological creatures and the classic Time before Time era. The movie takes place in an unknown time where the world is very young and is populated by fairies, dwarves, goblins and all things that symbolize good and evil including Unicorns and the Devil. The problem of the story starts when the Dark Lord, leader of goblins and everything that is evil steals the horn of a unicorn, the only thing that keeps the balance between good and evil equal. By kidnapping a young forrest girl who is the symbole of innocence the world is thrown into winter darkness and unless the strength of a young man can save her and restore the horn to the unicorn the world will enter another ice age. This movie has it all. Good acting, excellent plot, special effects, setting and absolutely perfect music to fit the placement of the time. See this movie and you'll see what I mean.
Rating: Summary: It's impossible to rate this one Review: Legend deserves a new rating system entirely. It is both a terrible movie and one of the great unintentional humor classics of our time, and how can you express that with a number of stars? The first time I saw Legend, it took us almost five hours to watch the movie because of the amount of time we spent laughing, then rewinding to see what we'd missed. Legend is, on the surface, a fantasy or mythological story about two innocents battling the devil for the Future of the Free World. However, the plot is obscure and jumpy, so it's fortunate that it's really unimportant. The best part of this movie is the unintentional humor, which comes from so many different sources, and is so strong that I don't hestitate to call Legend a classic. This movie has it all - special effects error humor (look for the wobbling unicorn horns and the palpably visible string suspending the Christmas tree light playing the sprite), physical humor (the marvelous Dances with Dwarves scene, in which tin plates are hurled around to use as (I think) reflecting mirrors), even profound questions (*why* is there only one soul in hell, and what did he do? what is with all the screen-obscuring things constantly drifting around - bubbles, feathers, etc.? what's with all the glitter?). And on repeat viewing, more questions arise (like why does Tom Cruise spend 90% of the movie crouching? and for pete's sake, what's with all the GLITTER everywhere?) There's no way to watch Legend as a serious movie, but anyone with a sense of humor will enjoy the experience enormously anyway. Caveat: do not attempt to consume popcorn or other refreshments while watching unless someone present knows the Heimlich maneuver. It's far too likely that you'll aspirate something while laughing.
Rating: Summary: I love this movie but.......... Review: I absolutely love this movie. It is one of my favorites. However, since it is one of my favorites, there are things in it that I have discovered. This version is not the best one out there. If you want to see Legend and live in the US, I would say look for it to be shown on TV. There is not one version of Legend that is the best but this is as close as we can get. The versions released on TV, in the US, and in Europe are in some ways quite different and each have there good and bad points. The US version, I understand, is the worst. Since we cannot get the European version here, the TV version is as good as it gets. Watch that, rent this one, and compare the two.
Rating: Summary: Not for Kids Review: I picked up legend because my daughter is into the fantasy genre (Ladyhawke, Dragonheart, Pricess Bride). I was dissappointed with this movie. Legend has all the elements that should make it a great fantasy film, Unicorns, fairies, elves, goblins. . . an innocent princess and a really evil villan. Somehow it still falls flat. It never inspires a real rapport with the characters. The best character is Tim Curry's devil. The emphasis of the film is more on the visual scenery than the storyline. Way too much time is spent grubbing around in "hell", which was way too creepy for us. Tom Cruise was a two dimensional hero. Not enough substance there to get worked up over. Our two girls (10 & 11) were very disturbed by it, to the point they couldn't sleep. I don't recommend it for pre-teens.
Rating: Summary: I can't wait! Review: I'm one of those people who can see a new movie and call it a classic right away. Legend is a classic. I used to own it on video and would always break it out if someone hadn't seen it before. Everyone I know loves this movie now. I must have seen this film at least fifty times all together but I don't think I'll ever get tired of it. This is one movie that I would recommend buying instead of renting. I've been reading some other reviews of this movie and found that it's going to be out on DVD soon...I hope. I need this one in my collection bad! Feel free to e'mail me when it comes out. Anyone!
Rating: Summary: To the Lactose Intolerant - This film is totally CHEESY Review: I first saw this film when I was about 8, and loving unicorns, thought it was great. But now that I've seen it as a 22 year old I think differently. I don't know if it was the abundance of glitter on Tom Cruise's face, the annoying voices of almost all the characters, the 80's synthesizer background music or the awful ending song, but I was dissapointed. This is 1 1/2 hours of my life that I will never get back. As a final word, kids may like it, but adults (well everyone but my sister who actually owns this movie) may be better off just watching it muted. The scenes are beautiful but can't make up for the annoying aspects.
Rating: Summary: Something a little different Review: Another visual feast from Ridley Scott. While a somewhat 2 dimensional character set and story, it seems, on purpose, to strive for this. Trying to mimic the simple story of a fairy tale. The strength of the movie here is every scene with Curry as Evil. He is just superb. I can't recall seeing anything like him in this movie. All of his scenes are just precious. The only improvement would have been to boost his time on screen.
Rating: Summary: Legendary... Review: This was a highly unusual film in the sense that it was not marketed for young children despite its strong fairy tale theme. Yet, with a fearsome character like Darkness, one can see why young children would have nightmares. Fortunatley I was a teen when this movie was released; I truly cherish this film for it's rich effects, costumes, and brilliant sets and backgrounds (not at all a slouch for a 1986 release pre-dating computer graphics effects). It is also hard to believe that in that very same year of 1986 Tom Cruise would also star in his trademark blockbuster film Top Gun. Mia Sara is also a fine actress in her own artistic right; She was not at all melodramatic nor was she cardboard either ! The amazing transformation both physically and vocally for Tim Curry's Darkness is still one of the most mesmerizing actor-costume appearances in film history! Yes, I too, am waiting for the letterboxed dvd version !
