Rating: Summary: Be Wary Of The Dark Lord Review: The long awaited DVD release of Director Ridley Scott's infamous fantasy-adventure, LEGEND, is worth it. Tom Cruise is a forrest dweller, chosen to undertake a mythical quest, to save a beautiful Princess (Mia Sara). She is being held captive by the demon-like Lord Of Darkness, (Tim Curry), who with his great powers, wants to plunge the world into an eternal ice age. When first released in 1986, the director made some drastic cuts to the movie, after a poor test screening. The end result was a 90 minute film that felt rushed and incomplete. When it came time to release LEGEND overseas, Scott reinserted some 24 minutes back into the movie. Now, fully restored, both fans and non-fans can finally see the film, the way the director intended. The story is a bit darker than most fairy tales and that is to the film's advantage. Curry is just great as the antogonist. The make-up and creature effects from Rob Bottin rival anything I have seen lately, using CGI.Here is how the 2 disc "Ultimate Edition" DVD breaks down: Disc One-contains the 114 minute cut of the film; along with Composer Jerry Goldsmith's original score for the film. The Goldsmith score was replaced in an attempt to broaden the film's appeal. It is great to finally be able to hear in the film. There is also an ejoyable and informative commentary from Scott that is well done. Disc 2-contains the 90 minute U.S. theatrical cut of the movie with the Tangerine Dream music. The rest of the special features are on the 2nd disc as well. Among the notable bonus material-a making of documentary, "lost scenes", storyboards, a music video, and photo gallery/publicity. There is also script to scene comparison in the form of DVD-ROM. I have always been a fan of this film and to finally have both versions in one place is cool. I must say that this film has its detractors but I think that is in large part due to the initial edit. Fans should like the release. If you like the work of Ridley Scott, give this one a look, you will enjoy it. I recommend this DVD as rental. first, for those who have never seen LEGEND. For all others, I Highly Recommend this DVD
Rating: Summary: Thank god for DVDs... Review: ... because without them we probably wouldn't have the Director's Cut of such an amazing, and vastly underrated film. If you've watched the US release, you cannot understand the true Otherworldly essence this movie contains, not only due to the music score, but also the different scene cuts. However, it was very interesting to watch both versions, as the US and the Director's Cut are both on this "Ultimate Edition" DVD set. Tangerine Dream's score is interesting - electronica, ELO style (if you've seen "Xanadu", you will probably know what I mean), but lacking real depth. Jerry Goldsmith's score truly captures every magical moment throughout the film, and really brings to life not only the scenery, but also the emotions of the characters (and viewers). The US cut also destroys much of the basic premise of the story - the idea that pure innocence can destroy pure evil. The US cut implies Jack and Lili (made only a Lady in this version, not the Princess of the European release) are already having a sexual relationship at the begining of the film. How can she be considered 'pure' (in traditional fairytale style) if she is having sex (implied or not)? This is but one of the many jarring edits made to this film, which have been rectified in the Director's Cut. I deifinitely urge anyone to watch this edition - there are not enough true fairytales captured on the big screen for children anymore, and the depth of ideas also makes it enjoyable for adults. Besides, it has Tim Curry as Darkness, the devil - how can you say no to that? Watch it. Adore it. Feel the magic, and believe.

Rating: Summary: REDISCOVER A MASTERPIECE Review: Ridley Scott's much maligned fantasy adventure finally makes it to DVD in a beautifully packaged, lavish two disc set that features a glorious director's cut that's almost 25 minutes longer than the original U.S. theatrical release of 17 years ago. The fleshing out of character and story in this classic beauty and the beast, good and evil, light and darkness fable certainly fills in the gaps and makes this wondrous tale a substantially nuanced and more emotionally satisfying experience. Tom Cruise is Jack, a mythical forest dweller whom fate has chosen to battle a demonic lord of darkness (Tim Curry) to save a princess (Mia Sara). Director Scott claims this restored version -- including Jerry Goldsmith's mystical score -- is the film he originally wanted to make. In his richly detailed and entertaining commentary, he covers a myriad of production concerns and makes note that all the amazing sets and effects were essentially filmed as we see them in real time and not the result of computer graphics or optical tricks. Hard to believe the huge forest sets were built to order inside a gigantic sound stage. They are even more surreal and dreamlike in this perfect widescreen transfer. There's a wealth of extras including the original version, isolated original release score by Tangerine Dream, lost scenes, storyboards, recreation (with photos and drawings and music) of discarded scenes, Brian Ferry's music video "Is Your Love Strong Enough" and much, much more. This striking film deserves rediscovery and Universal has spared no expense in creating a terrific digital edition of what is now clearly a masterpiece of epic fantasy that was only hinted at in its original release. Special note should be made of the remarkably visual original screenplay by William Hjortsberg who also wrote the novel "Fallen Angel" that became the underrated film "Angel Heart." Another story about confronting Satan.
Rating: Summary: Unicorns Review: This is an interesting movie. It's with Mia Sara as Lilly. A girl who accidentally looses the unicorns ( in a way ) to the world. It's a very beautiful movie. I love the dress that Mia Sara wears in it . It's a different movie fantasy wise and it's really good to watch every once in a while.
Rating: Summary: Must see this Movie!!!! Review: Okay, I haven't seen the DVD yet, but I will, very, very soon. I just want to recommend this movie to anyone who is a Tom Cruise fan, unicorn lover, and to anyone who loves to see Tim Curry as the ultimate devil. (I always thought he played the ultimate bad guy). When I heard that Legend was a European import and the US version I saw of the movie sucked compared to its original release, I knew I had to get it, because, if I loved the Us release, how much will I love the original version? I must know!I put a rating of five stars 'cause I'm very sure this DVD rocks!
Rating: Summary: Great to have choice Review: Tangerine Dream score (original US) was far better and more appropriate than the pendantic Goldsmith score. TD was at their height at this time. The TD score, and the two add ons by Brian Ferry and Jon Anderson from Yes, were highlights from the '86 release. But it was nice to finally see the alternate Euro version. The extra scenes with Meg Knucklebones was a hoot. I am not sure which film person was responsible for the overall look, and world details of the movie, but they really did a great job. This is probably the last movie made before CGI took over the world and if it were made today it would have that cartoony look that the people seem to like (but I don't.) My opinion of the movie is about the same-- if they had a traderje cut they would delete all the humans and have a fine film. These little goblins and monsters and forest folk all give great performances and the world is beutifully presented (or frighteningly as the case may be.) The Tim Curry monster was pretty scary.
Rating: Summary: The stuff of Dreams and Legend Review: This is a wonderful work that adds to the realm of fantasy. Besides a wonderful story of Good v. Evil (the cornerstone of all fantasy) we are blessed with some fantastic performances by Tim Curry and Mia Sara. Tom Cruise also does a fine job. One of the best things about this version is that both the Original and Directors cuts are available. This way you can choose either the original film that you grew up with or the directors cut. Other SciFi / Fantasy directors should release films this way (COUGH... GEORGE LUCAS.... COUGH COUGH). This is a must have for fans of Lord of the Rings, Dune, Babylon 5, and other great fantasy works.
Rating: Summary: "No Good without Evil..." Review: I might be one of the few people who didn't like the director's cut of this film more than the US theatrical version. The basic story is about a princess named Lily (Mia Sara) and a forest boy named Jack (Tom Cruise) who are in love, but are split apart when they have to go on a quest to save the world from being taken over by the Lord of Darkness (Tim Curry). Unicorns are the source of light, and the Lord of Darkness wants to have them all killed. Jack and several fairies go to rescue both Princess Lily and the unicorn when they are captured by the evil Lord. Having never seen the movie before, I didn't realize there would be such a difference between the director's cut and the theatrical release. I watched both in the same day, with the D.C. being the first version I saw. I felt like the scenes were too dark (in a visual way, not content), Lily's singing to the unicorns was annoying, and, honestly, I thought Jerry Goldsmith's score was way over done. I'd always been told that the music was light, New Age, and very '80s. Then I saw the original US version. I thought it was so much better! Although some cool scenes were cut (Meg admiring herself in the shield), I thought the end with Jack and the unicorn was better explained, the scenes were easier to see, and the music was great. The feeling of this version was much lighter and the story was easier to follow. Overall, I would say this movie is very enjoyable, but the version you watch will give you two very different experiences. I disagree with the people who say the theatrical version felt choppy; I think the director's cut flowed much more poorly. The music, too, plays a major part in the feeling of the film. Jerry Goldsmith's orchestra makes the movie seem overly-epic and can drown out scenes, while Tangerine Dream's soundtrack seems more mystical and light. Though I like the US theatrical version the best, both movies should be watched to get the full effect of this great fairy tale. As a whole, the characters are fun, the costumes and scenery are well done, and the battle between purity/goodness and Tim Curry's evil (he always makes the best villains!) is a classic tale you shouldn't miss.
Rating: Summary: Astonishingly Bad Review: This is a horrible movie about a guy and gal (Dentally retarded Tom Cruise and Mia Sara), who love each other.....blah blah blah. When the Lord of Darkness (Tim Curry in a damn stupid costume) kills a unicorn for its horn, the world plunges into an ice age. He kidnaps the gal, so the guy has to save her and the world...yuk First of all, this movie should not have been rated PG. The costume of Tim Curry was a bit frightening, and definitely would have made a 7-year-old pass out. The storyline sucked, and Tom Cruise's companions who help him rescue Mia Sara were plucked out of an '80s Jim Henson movie, excluding Gump, A Midsummer Night's Dream Puck's look-alike.....DON'T BUY THIS MOVIE!!!!!!!!
