Summary: If you like LotR, you'll love this.
Review: Lord of the Rings perfectly brings Tolkein's world to cinema. My friends and I were thorougly impressed, most of us having read the books. Visuals are perfect, score is perfect. But enough about the movie, what about the DVD?Honestly, it equals the power of the movie. The special features include every network special that aired prior to the movie's release, every commercial, every trailer, every preview that ever aired. You get actor interviews, and special insight into all aspects of filmmaking from every side of the issue: the director to the visal people to the actors. The only thing it doesn't have are the minigames included with most DVD's these days. While the 2-year-olds might miss this sort of feature, the rest of uss will be too busy enjoying the movie and features to notice. One last note: Yes, this DVD set includes previews into The two Towers and the Special Extended set, both of which are narrated and/or commented on by Peter Jackson (the director) himself. If you can afford the Special Extended, I reccomend going after it instead. Even so, this set by itself is easily worth twice the price you pay. A must have.

Summary: How will it be surpassed?
Review: Even if you read the book, saw the movie, or bought the VHS, you should thing about getting the DVD too. Maybe even the extended version.
This play cannot be surpassed and time will not change that.
Screenplay, story, music and actors make a fantastic and heroic world come true, a world that you can be in as long as the DVD lasts.
The quality of the whole production is one of the best ever. Maybe Lord of the Rings is for our generation what Ben Hur (the movie) was for the previous generation : Unique, a film to use as a guideline for others. Have a nice time in Middle earth.

Summary: Improves on perfection. 10 stars.
Review: Wow. On November 5, 2002 I went to an advance theatrical screening of the extended edition of Fellowship of the Rings. This was the same edition that appears on this DVD, with the extra 30 minutes of footage.
Wow.
It was AWESOME. I was amazed at how the extra footage improved on perfection. The extra 30 minutes footage was divided into a minute here, thirty seconds there, to a significant extension of the Shire and Lothlorien. For vaguge details, see below:

The extra footage developed the relationships between Gimli & Legolas, Aragorn & Boromir, Frodo & Sam, and Arwen & Aragorn. That last bit really changed the way I felt about Arwen/Liv Tyler. She rocks. The character is so much better now, and I'm glad Jackson chose her instead of Glorfindel as the bearer of the wounded Frodo.
Also, significantly, the additional footage showed some signifant plot points that were just plain missing from the first cut (I won't go into details, but if you read the book and remember Lothlorien you'll know what I mean).
But best of all was the extra characterization; the characters of the Fellowship were developed and they became people; Legolas and Gimli instead of just Iconic Blustery Dwarf and Iconic Graceful Elf, Haldir instead of Suspicious Lothlorien Guard, Boromir instead of Doomed Patriotic Man, Aragorn instead of Gloomy Ranger. The 30 minutes developed not only characters, but also places and history: Lothlorien and Gondor are much more developed.
The special edition is SO MUCH BETTER. But, remarkably, the special edition also showed just how good the first cut is. Meaning, even without the 30 minutes, the first cut ably conveyed the majesty and vital plot points of Tolkien's book, and even included a LOT of character development for Gandalf, Frodo, and Sam and background info on the Shire, Imladris, Isengard, Mordor, Moria and Middle Earth.
Wow. I still get chills, just thinking about the movie.
If you liked Fellowship of the Rings, you'll *love* this special edition.

Summary: overblown tripe
Review: what a disappointment...the vision of book-to-film has truly been lost here, with overwrought, hammy acting on the part of practically everyone (especially Sir Ian and Elijah W), as well as poor editting, and a real "Hollywood-ization" of a classic. The extra footage is the biggest disappointment, since it promises to fill in gaps and help with pacing, but instead....just meakes the pain last longer. Give this a big miss. Dr S

Summary: Better than theatrical version!
Review: This was really much more elaborate than the theatrical version. There are only 30 minutes of extra footage, but it seems a lot longer. And so much detail was added. I really felt that the theatrical version did not do Aragorn justice. He was simply there - he served the function of fighter and leader, and the only glimpses of his personality and history we see is his few moments with Arwen. In the extended edition more details are given about Aragorn's history and background, as well as his relationship with Arwen with references to a similar romance between two of his ancestors (Luthien and Beren, for those who have read the book). More of the relationship between Legolas and Gimli are revealed, and they are less flat as characters than before. In particular, this movie showed the interaction between Gimli and Galadriel, as well as the gift-giving at Lothlorien. Extended fight scenes. Oh, and a few minor characters that were left out in the theatrical version also make small cameos. :)

Review: Wow, that is a ... huge amount of reviews. I just thought I'd comment on that. Lord Buddha I haven't seen so many opinions on anything in here. Well, the movie. IT ... ROCKS!!! I hate hate hate hate hate, despise, abhor Harry Potter. People, forget harry, see this! Forget anything for that matter, see this! I wouldn't call myself a geek, at all actually, but I read the trilogy and the Silmarillion every damn summer. How's that for obsession. And I have seen the movie exactly 15 times. My first time was with my not-yet-girlfriend at that time and i was GLUED to the screen. It was amazing. She didn't like it too much...mainly cause instead of giving her my undevided attention I couldn't move my eyes off the screen. If you are one of those people who live under a rock and didn't see the movie yet (I'm not even talking bout reading the book) you NEED to see it! I cannot wait untill the rest of the trilogy comes out! *Advice* If your girl doesn't like the movie, don't go with her.
Anyways, I am gonna see Harry Potter soon, jst cause I need to know how bad [it] is. LOTR all the way!

Review: The Lord of the Rings is a fantasy film with heart wit and humor.
I admired the performances of the Stars: Elijah Wood,Sean Astin,Ian Mckellen,Viggo Mortensen, and Liv Tyler. Parents beware though because there are a few scary monsters and an evil spell turns two people into monster like people. There are also a few sword duels, some slapstick peril, and 2 mildly bloody battles. But aside from that this film is great!!! The Extras include 14 Short interview featurettes, and 3 film featurettes, plus a preview of the more Story Supported Sequel,The Two Towers.

Summary: Good Fun (though a bit overrated)
Review: A fine film by any measure, though we really have to wait for the sequels for the interesting scenes. I saw this flick twice in the cinema and twice more on video (I own a copy). But I'd have to be honest: not much goes on in the first part of the Tolkien trilogy, and neither Jackson nor anybody else could have done anything about it. The computer graphics are a little crude by American standards, but what more can I expect from New Zealand? If Jackson had got them from Industrial Light & Magic, he would have gone way over the $270 million budget. Anyway, they are not too bad, as they are. I applaud Jackson for his efforts, and I look forward very much to his sequels. Having seen a long clip of The Two Towers in the Official LoTR Exhibition in Toronto - the only one in the whole world - I can tell you that this one looks pretty good - it really is better than the first installment. People who have seen this clip are not likely to be over-impressed by The Fellowship of the Ring. Purists among Tolkien's fans may not approve of any movies; after all, there's much you'd have to leave out in celluloid. But I guess Tolkien himself, had he seen the films, would have been rolling in his grave....in delight!
