Rating: Summary: How unappreciative some of us are... Review: Seriously, I gave it a single star to grab peoples' attention; I actually give it 4 and 1/2. I had my doubts, but I ended up enjoying the movie. Now, onto more pressing matters... Tis a shame that some reviewers don't like this movie due to some bias they have, pre or post, about the movie. First off, to the parents -- Why do you complain? You have no right to be appalled by the content of this movie. Can you not read? There are reviews out there that allow you to judge what is appropriate for your children. Ratings systems are abound all over the internet, movie rental stores, etc. Ask questions! Or better yet, rent the movie; screen it so you know what's coming. Don't sit with your children watching it and then come to find there is blood and gore within. You're the parent, so act like one. Secondly, to the insecure and stubborn -- how pitiful. What has this world come to that we can't accept a child's world? "Oh no, I don't feel masculine because I'm watching an anime with all-too-common world issues." Or perhaps you prefer some political strife? "Nah, 3rd-world countries without women's rights -- not a problem." "Environmentalism -- just a bunch of tree-hugging sissies." "This movie made me puke...the ugly pigs with boils and pus..." Ha, the pigs didn't have such features. Then that same reviewer reccomends watching Ninja Scroll, which is twice as voilent. Now then; those of you who apply to any of the above, words alone cannot express your ignorance. And to those who were "suckered" into watching it due to hype, then disappointed -- oh well. That's why it's called HYPE. Don't even get me started on the most recently hype-turned-out-to-be-mediocre machine, the PS2... Finally, to those who I did not address. If for any reason you gave this great anime a subpar rating, besides the ones written for its somewhat lacking technical aspects, go crawl under a rock. Return and write a review when A) you are unbiased and B) you know the facts.
Rating: Summary: kickass anime! Review: I have to admit this is a really good movie I'd rate it my 2nd favorite of all time (1st goes to 'grave of the fireflies' which is also a kickass movie but i don't know where to find it cause my dad got it at a pawn shop) its 12:00 AM! buy this movie or rent it you won't regret it. I promise. my fave character is Moro the white wolf god (shes a god even though shes female) i'm not much on information but take my word for it, it's really good!
Rating: Summary: A great movie!!!! Review: I heard about this movie from a good friend,so on the weekend of my birthday I rented it.To be honest I thought it was going to be stupied but boy was I wrong. The animation is great, the story is a wonderful tale of man vs nature. At first it starts out kind of simple, a young man startes out to find out if someone can lift a cures given to him by a demon/god. Then as he travels on and meets princess mononoke it get more complicated and trilling. being an anime fan I didn't ecspecte it to be to childish but never ecpected this. This is a great movie for action seekers. Actuly this movie has somthing for everyone, it has just the right amount of action, comedy, and even a litte romaince but not over doing the perfect mix and noware near childish. There arn't many movies these days for preteens/early teens that don't over do some thing but this movie is perfect. Even boys will like it.(my brother loves it!)
Rating: Summary: Pretty Good, An Important Message For Our Times Review: I am pleased that people still watch GOOD Anime like this. The story and artwork are great. The main theme of Princess Mononoke, that Man should live in a balanced state with nature, has become even more relevent due to the changing political climate in this country.
Rating: Summary: Fabulous and Gripping Review: Towards the beginning of the movie I was planning to take it back to Blockbuster and complain about how horrible it was, but as the story of Princess Mononoke progressed, it became more and more fascinating. By the end it had reached into my heart and struck a chord. Very thought-provoking and allegorical, yet fun, Princess Mononoke is a definite recommendation for anyone who can filter out the polytheistic/panthiestic themes and see the wealth of application, warning, and instruction given in this movie to our generation. Kudos to everyone involved in this work of art!
Rating: Summary: Pure story-telling brilliance Review: The mind is boggled, words fail and there aren't enough stars to commend this film. Everything about it - characters, story, animation - makes it one of the greatest movie experiences of all time, animation or not. Just pipping the 2 hour mark, the plot draws on Japanese mythology which, although it may mean more to people more familiar with the culture, can be understood on a fairly universal basis - I won't bore you with details since it's done above. There's no ecological preaching, no clearly-defined good and evil, just a battle between the forces of progress and nature itself, and the bravery of a young stranger who would try to unite them both while fighting for his own life. Perfect acting and amazing animation only strengthens an already powerful experience, plus the DVD quality was quite excellent. Just one point to mention - this movie seems to have set itself up for a sequel, even a series, where the origins of the two young heroes and their continuing relationship are revealed. Finally, I am fairly new to the works of Studio Ghibli (I may have seen some of their other stuff aeons ago but nothing's available here in the UK - WHY?), yet I can quite confidently say that their animation is the greatest of anime and at least the match of Disney's best efforts. They are not the Japanese Disney though; their smaller number of creations are infinitely more diverse and full of the magic the best of Disney contains but a spark of(that spark seems to have died out since the classic Lion King). Weary of flat Hollywood efforts, bored of slushy romances and endless films about Brit drug culture? Well I'm confident there's any number of countries can produce better films than the US of A, but why not start here? Japan may have given us guys in rubber dinosaur suits but it's also given us classics for all time, such as the great Tombstone for Fireflies and now Princess Mononoke. I can't speak for everyone, but my expectations were sure as heck exceeded! (Oh by the way, this film is not the "Star Wars" of animated features - who came up with that one?)
Rating: Summary: an enlightening parable. Review: THis is fantasy at it's best. Princess Mononoke takes place in fictional pre industrial Japan. A mystical place where dangers and wonders exist in equal measure. In this world gods of nature roam the forest protecting it from harm. The people in this world have discovered how to process ore and find hope of better lives through technology. The greatest achievement of this film is that it really doesn't chose sides. The message of the film is that everyone is competing for scarce resources and will use any rationale to control them. The film itself is beautifully animated(as expected from Miyazaki) with surperb attention to detail. Also the movie has great imaginative designs the forest spirit, and nightwalker are amazing. The little forest sprites are wonderful. I wish I could find one in a tree somewhere.
Rating: Summary: Not what I expected Review: 'Princess Mononoke' was not at all what I expected. I wasn't looking forward to this film, anticipating that it would be a little too 'pokemon-ish' for my taste. I was pleasantly surprised to find an intelligent and artistic film with quite possibly the best in animation. The backgrounds are breathtaking and very realistic. The characters were all interesting and believable. As an added bonus...this has by far, the BEST character voices I've seen in a long time. Gillian Anderson, Billy Bob Thornton, Claire Danes, Jada Pinkett Smith, Minnie Driver...do I even need to go on? TOP NOTCH performances, esp. by Anderson as Moro the wolf-goddess. What a great character! This movie is not only appropriate for children, it should be a requirement. The colorful and interesting characters will hold their interest and the message from this story is clear from the begining. Best of all, adults can enjoy this one too. Highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: Spectacular!!!!!!!!! Review: This is a wonderful movie! The animation is great, the storyline is great, the characters are alive with emotion, and the music is beautiful. I won't tell the story, I'm sure many other's have already. I would recommend it anyone, even if you don't know what anime is, it's a must-see.
