Rating: Summary: Simply amazing! Review: Pirates of the Caribbean was outstanding! Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightly-well, to shorten it up: the whole cast-did a terrific job on this movie. The plot keeps you hanging on every movement and word, the swordfights are the closest to realistic as I've ever seen. Our Jack Sparrow steals the show with his clever antics and constant cracks. The enchanting governer's daughter (Keira Knightly) plays her part and is hilarious at times (Quoted: "I can't breathe!"). And last comes our charming blacksmith's apprentice, played by Orlando Bloom, who does the deeds. Not to mention keep our eyes peeled. I'd rate this as #1 movie of 2003. One review dragged on about unnecessary scenes, and another about how lengthy it was. But in my opinion, it was perfect.
Rating: Summary: Arrgh, matey! Pirates sinks under weight of clunky script! Review: Having heard terrifc word of mouth over the summer, I was excited to see "Pirates of the Caribbean" on DVD. I really wanted to like this movie. Unfortunately, the film never quite lived up to all the hype. Here's what I liked: 1. Decent cinemetography and good choice of outdoor shooting locations. 2. The actors seemed to be enjoying themselves. No one took their performances too seriously. None of that "I can't believe I went to Julliard for this!" subtext. Here's what I did not like: 1. Johnny Depp. Yes, I know everyone has praised his performance. For me, Johnny was merely adequate as the happy-go-lucky Jack Sparrow. Over the top? Certainly! Brilliant, no. There's no great skill to hamming it up. In fact, he comes off as a bit mannered. 2. Running jokes that sink like lead balloons. How many times do we have to endure the same jokes over and over again about "Jack Sparrow" being the worst / best pirate ever? Other jokes repeated so frequently that they lose any freshness they might have once had. 3. Slow pacing. It took over an hour of exposition to set up the primary conflict between Jack and the Pirates of the Carribean. The movie totals over 2 hours. You would think they could have picked up the pace and edited out some of the klunkier exposition. 4. That annoying soundtrack. Did the soundtrack sound familiar to you despite the tinny orchestra? There's a reason why . . . They recycled most of it from music by Hans Zimmer for Gladiator. Just check the credits . . . 5. Cheesy special effects. I know that George Lucas' Industrial Lights and Magic did the special effects for the movie. Unfortunately, the CGI magic didn't quite work here. I couldn't suspend disblief . . . everything looked very "digital."
Rating: Summary: AWESOME!!! Review: I loved this movie, and I'm actually pretty picky about what i think of the movies I see. But Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom are awesome! The skeleton Pirates were so cool it's like a thrill ride. I took my eight year old brother to see this movie, I honestly thought it would be to scary for him, but he (and my dad) loved it! This movie seriously made being a pirate seem like the most fun ever!! If you haven't seen it you really really should!!
Rating: Summary: BEST MOVIE IN THE WORLD Review: Every movie that i like is the best movie in the world, BUT THIS Is the best movie in the world!
Rating: Summary: Dep!rived Review: I love johnny with a great passion. look at how gorgeous the man is! and talent wise well just watch the movie and you 'll see. the only flaw is i HATE WIDESCREEN it sucks those black bars are so awful and its so small so when i want to see johnny up close i have to zoom in 3 times and it streches out the picture and cuts off his face sometimes. anyways its the best film of the year that is until the return of the king rolls around.
Rating: Summary: Clever and Entertaining! Review: I didn't have high expectations going to see Pirates of the Caribbean but it was a slow weekend so we took the plunge. Well, it was well worth the effort and I'm only disappointed that I didn't go see it earlier! I am adding it to my DVD collection for sure. The action is choreographed quite well and adds, doesn't distract, from the film. The fantasy is also a welcome addition as it blends reality with special effects rather seemlessly. The humor is genuine, timely and it doesn't feel forced. I rarely give 5 stars and reserve it for best in genre. Of all the fantasy pirate-type movies I've seen, this is by far the best!!!
Rating: Summary: Pirates of the Editing Room Review: Pirates of the Caribbean made every Disney executive fall out of their seats. It made every sceptic (including me) eat our pessimistic words. The trailers looked like another cut throat island waiting to happen. Well to say the least, 300 million dollars later, it was the surprise hit of the summer. I never saw it in theatres but caught it on DVD. Johnny Depp is certainly the star of the show, but to the credit of the entire production, he is not necessarily the only thread holding the show together. The main evil pirate is played with great ellegance and orlando bloom (type cast unfortunately) also does good at johnny's side. Gore verbinski brings back the thrills and serious adventure required to make a movie like this work. The action scenes involving the skeleton pirates are nothing short of exhilerating, always picking the movie up when it slows down. The only flaw found here is frankly the running time is almost rediculous. Such scenes as when johnny and the chick are stuck on the island, seem only to stretch the movie unecessarily. It seems that every character takes turns getting captured and seperated from the group. This could have been a tight 2 hour action movie, instead we are treated to scenes that are cutting room floor material. I hate to nit pick, I can sit through the longest of films, but not when I feel that the extra scenes bring nothing to the character dev or plot, they need to go. And we are treated to a very strange 2nd ending. Why didn't orlando confess his love on the boat at night after they beat the pirates? Why didn't captain jack swim away or stay on the island? It seems rather weak that all these things waited until they got back home so they could hang captain jack? It seems like their is a scene missing explaining why we got from point A straight to point C. These are minor things but ultimately it slows the movie down considerably. I don't mean to put down the movie, it's a success in more ways than one. It's worth watching for the sheer fun of it all. Verbinski has proven twice he can bring class to mainstream flicks with the Ring and now pirates. It's just a shame more wasn't done in the editing room to tighten it all up. Maybe the sequel can fix this. It's definetly worth seeing and buying if you don't mind the extraneous scenes.
Rating: Summary: Mr. Depp, your table is waiting Review: I first saw this 12-02-03 on DVD. Johnny Depp was terrific, as were the action scenes. My first reaction to Depp was, "he sounds like Keith Richards!" This response was echoed by the amazon.com reviewer. My only complaint is that it is a little too long. Take a break at the 1.5 hour mark, and get some snacks.
Rating: Summary: A Long Time Coming Review: After CUTHROAT ISLAND flopped so badly in the box office, I was afraid for this film. (I really liked CUTHROAT ISLAND by the way.) I was very afraid that PIRATES would fall victim to silliness. After all, how good can a film based on a ride be? We have all seen just how bad video games translate, so I figured this wouldn't be any different. I was dead wrong. I can rarely watch something with my kids that I actually LIKE as well. This was an excellent movie with a great plot. It was more "fun" than anything. I wasn't moved to tears or made to think, but man did I have a good time. So did my kids. Depp outperforms everyone and rightly deserves praise. Bloom is excellent also. This is a great film and a must see for all rogues at heart.
Rating: Summary: You wouldn't put up with it with music Review: Why widescreen? Well, suppose you bought a CD from your favorite artist. Suppose there were two versions released of the CD. The "good" version has the entire songs. The "bad" version has the beginning and end of every song abruptly cut off. Would you like that? Would you be tolerant of people who PREFER their music that way and clamor for more BAD versions to be released? Or would you tell them to go back to their tinny transistor radios if the artist's vision and the sound isn't a concern of theirs? Fullscreen cuts off the left and right sides of the movie. It's bad no matter how you try to defend it. People who prefer Fool Screen should just go back to watching VHS, since picture quality is obviously not a concern. And, oh yeah, good movie! In WIDESCREEN!
