Rating: Summary: Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl Review: This movie was awesome. I will own it! At first I thought that Johnny Depp acted too effeminate for his part until it was explained that he lost his mind when marooned on the island alone. I loved all of it from the CGI to the sword battles between all the players to the happy ending. Even the booms of cannons and the destruction was all done well. As for Julieta from Boston, pirates were cruel and evil. If you think that they should have been made nicer just for your grandchildren you are very wrong. The world was tough then. Try to think about that before passing judgment on what was as realistic as possible.
Rating: Summary: It's a great family movie Review: This movie is perfect for everyone young and old. Depp is one of the best current actors right now and this movie proves it. You'll like it, I know you will. The special features are ok, but everyone buys the DVD for the movie anyway so be one of those people and get this movie. It's great!
Rating: Summary: Where were the commercials? Review: Yikes! This was pretty bad, as movies go. It had the feel of a film shot over a period of years. The characters changed personality to fit each moment as though they'd forgotten who they were yesterday. The special effects got tiresome. It was like having to listen to a car salesman chatter on what the car could do on the road when all you want is to get out there and drive. Pirates of the Caribbean reminds me of those never-seen-in-a-theater films that turn up on cable TV. You'll long for a commercial break!P.S. I'm embarrassed for Jonathan Pryce and Johnny Depp who had to stagger through this stuff.
Rating: Summary: too violent for the little ones, but overall entertaining Review: I DON'T LIKE THE WAY SO MANY MOVIES ARE MADE WITH EXCESSIVE VIOLENCE FOR KIDS, AND THIS WAS PRETTY VIOLENT. TOO MUCH GUNFIRE AND EXPLOSIONS FOR A SMALL BOY, NO MATTER THE RATINGS. I ENJOYED THE ENTERTAINMENT VALUE OF THIS VIDEO, BUT THE EXCESSIVE VIOLENCE MAKES IT A NO SHOW FOR MY DAUGHTER AND HER BOYS.
Rating: Summary: An Abiding Passion for Pirates Review: Well, okay, I must confess that I've had an abiding passion for pirates since I was knee-high to a rum bottle. It was that poem about the pirate and the mermaid that I read as a child. If parents only knew what went on in children's heads, they would be even more crazed then they are now. There was also Errol Flynn in CAPTAIN BLOOD (1935) and THE SEA HAWK (1940) endlessly sailing the seas on late-night telly. Oh, please! Be still my heart! So when it was announced that they were going to do a movie PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN with Johnny Depp, I was nearly a goner. Now like most women in America, Mr. Depp affects me most profoundly. Well, to put it mildly, he quivers me limbers. Lest you think I was in a puddle on the floor, you may set your fears aside; I was skeptical. Could they honestly make a good film out of an amusement park ride? Well, maties, they actually made quite a good one. Miracle of miracles, there is actually a plot. There is swordplay, treasure, and adventure with a romance to boot. There are nice little homages to the ride throughout the film. I've always loved the dog in the gaol! The Caribbean scenery was (sigh) gorgeous. There is enough spookiness with the cursed skeletal pirates to satisfy your scary bone (that's a little higher than the funny bone) but not keep you awake at night. The monkey did creep me a little. Just a little. All the actors were great! Orlando Bloom (my favorite elf) and Keira Knightley did a splendid job as the separated lovers. Geoffrey Rush as the villainous Barbossa is wonderful as he is in everything he does. The crew - well, they were an amazingly scurvy lot. Jack Davenport did a stiff-upper-lip job as the uptight British military commander in love with Knightley, but I must say he looks more handsome and more comfortable in his contemporary street clothes as seen in the bonus features. But sorry, my heart belongs to Johnny. As does this film! Cap'n Jack Sparrow is beautifully done -- so charming and funny. He is a lovable scoundrel. We all love a scoundrel. Depp modeled him on Keith Richards of the Stones and his incorporation of Richards into Sparrow is spot on. As Depp put it, Richards is a bit of a pirate himself. Yeah! (And hey, watch for Easter Eggs on this dvd!) I loved this movie. I loved the whole dvd experience. I'm not going to get all nitpicky. Go to some other reviews for that. I can't help it! With the presence of Johnny Depp my abiding passion for pirates has been assuaged. Well, at least for a short time. The passion abates but never goes away. X marks the spot, me bucko. X marks the spot.
Rating: Summary: "Pirates" Rocks Review: This was the best movie of the year! Buy it! You'll want to watch it over and over and over and over....well, you get the idea. Every age group can enjoy this movie. My Mom, Grandma, little sister (13) and me (17) all absolutely loved it. Now we own the DVD, and we've watched it several times together as a family. If you ask me...Johnny Depp was born for this role! If you're into music, you will love the movie soundtrack! "Pirates" Rocks!
Rating: Summary: Is That It? Review: OK, I heard a lot of good stuff about this movie and while it was entertaining, it wasn't that good. I just left the movie thinking "is that it?" It wasn't the worst movie I've ever seen, but I had expected a lot more, especially from all of my friends who said that it was really good and not to be missed.
Rating: Summary: Pirates of the Caribbean Review: This movie is an action-packed comedy that people ages 10+ can enjoy. With pirates, living skeletons in the moonlight, and love, it's an adventure for everyone!
Rating: Summary: Delightful! Review: This DVD is absolutely delightful and fun. Johnny Depp is quirky, fun and thoroughly entertaining. He is a rare and precious gem in the acting profession. The sets and effects of this wonderful costume piece are wonderful and elaborate. The directing is superb. While it is a bit long - it reminds me a something that is frequently overlooked by some... it is thoroughly entertaining
