Rating: Summary: THE COMPANY OF WOLVES Review: This is a kind of "gothic" retelling of the Red Riding Hood story. From director Neil Jordan (Interview With The Vampire)From a story by Angela Carter. The screenplay is co-written by her and Neil Jordan. It's deliciously infused with sensual/sexual undertones. It begins in modern times. A girl, named Rosaleen, has locked herself in her room, to get away from her older sister, Alice, who regards her as a "pest". There she falls asleep, where she dreams that her sister is being chased by a pack of hungry wolves with glowing eyes. She is suddenly at Alice's funeral (she was killed by a wolf.. obviously), and the setting is a small english village (maybe 17th-18th century?) She's now an only child living with her parents, and her old grandmother (played by Angela Landsbury) who lives in the woods. She goes to stay with her after the death of Alice. And her grandmother tells her about different types of wolves, the ones hairy on the outside and ones who are "hairy on the inside"---"wolves come in many guises" She tells Rosaleen a story about a werewolf (played by Stephen Rea) And warns her never to stray from the path in the woods "or you'll be lost entirely" And be cautious of men whose eyebrows meet (a tell-tale sign of a werewolf!) ......... I think "The Company of Wolves" is a wonderful enchanting film, with an ABSOLUTELY MAGICAL ENDING! I think that anyone who enjoys things with "gothic" themes, will like it. I loved the performance by Sarah Patterson (who I had never seen anywhere before) as Rosaleen. Shane Johnstone as the boy from Rosaleen's village who has a crush on her (listed in the credits only as "amorous boy"!) Of course great performances from Angela Landsbury as Rosaleen's old granny & Stephen Rea. I thought the script was very good, and I loved the dark mystical settings. And I'm SO glad it's on DVD! It's an excellent film! Quote from the end of the film: "Little girls this seems to say...never stop upon your way. Never trust a stranger friend. No one knows how it will end. As you're pretty, so be wise. Wolves may lurk in every guise. Now as then tis simple true. Sweetest tongue has sharpest tooth" From "Petit Chaperon Rouge" by Charles Perrault, 1912.
Rating: Summary: Very good Review: This is a Very good Werewolf film! It has Lots of dark humor...and relies on "old school" children's stories as a setting..however its not For children mind you, its Definitely worth a look for anyone who loves dark humored horror/werewolf films!
Rating: Summary: Very Dark Retelling of Little Red Riding Hood Review: This is certainly not, the popular Little Red Riding Hood version written by the the Grimms Brothers,or Perrault. It is a fantastic adult film, for people who have never stopped loving fairy tales. As a lover of Jack Zipes and Maria Tartar. This is a wonderful movie for someone who wants to devalue into a more or less traditional fairy tale retelling. Staring as "the Grandmother" is the wonderful actress Angela Lansbury along with, the young, and quiet lovely Sarah Patterson as "Rosaleen" ( Little Red Riding Hood. ) However, this movie is not for those weak at hearts. The transformation from man to beast, is quiet horrifying indeed. I though surprisingly liked it very well. Also as a bonus is a beautiful background music that really paces the film well.
Rating: Summary: A semi-forgotten dark fantasy classic finally on DVD. Review: This magical and arty fairy tale movie for grown ups was quite possibly a bit ahead of its time and never really reached a large audience in the eighties. Now it's here for a new generation to discover on DVD. Fans of movie directors like David Lynch and Jean-Pierre Jeunet will love it. Fans of modern 'dark fantasy' writers like Clive Barker, Anne Rice, Neil Gaiman and Jonathan Carroll will adore it.
Rating: Summary: UMMM...the end was good, cause that ment it was over? Review: This movie was SUPPOSED to be a cult classic, It has some aspects, but really never gets going. Right when you think the movie is "finnaly" getting good, the end credits roll, and you're just like, ummmmm, what was the point of the last hour and a half of my life? It's rather corney in the effects department, and though that did cause me to erupt in fits of violent giggels, the blood looked like pink jello, and for some reason Angela Landsbury kept telling her grandaughter that men with a unibrow were the devils minions. This movie would of done better as a colection of short werewolf stories, because the grandmothers repetitive breaks into gothic Fairy tales are AWESOME, but take away from the non existent plot. The movie finally gets good when "little red" finally meets a very handsome unibrowed "wolf" on the way to granny's, who tempts her with the pleasures of the flesh and eats out of her picnic basket. This leads to some more very bad effects, and about two minutes total of worth while "wolf action" This movie is not horrible if you dont try to watch it more than once from beginning to end, but use the scene selection instead, to allow theindividual short stories to stand on their own.
