Rating: Summary: Good Romantic movie Review: I have to admit I heard about this movie from one of my college friends. I went and bought it and fell immediately in love with it. Christopher Reeves meets an elderly lady who gives him a pocketwatch and thus utters the famous last words before she dies "Come back to me".. She is Elise Mckenna a famous 1900's stage actress who falls for a Reeve's character when he wills himself into her time period. There are ofcourse some flaws in the movie: Why does her overprotective manager already know that Reeves is coming? or Why does the older Elise already know Reeves before he knows her? But anyway take the 1980 movie at face value and you will love it. The only thing I didn't like was how it ended, the conclusion could of been stronger and it is somewhat dated (no pun intended)
Rating: Summary: Why do I love this movie? Let me count the ways... Review: When I first saw this movie one day on HBO, my expectations were low. I was a stay-at-home Mom watching this flick during the kiddos nap time. But I was quickly drawn into the movie and ran out and bought the VHS as soon as I could! (which was about 10 years later!) When my children grew up, I introduced them to the movie and it quickly became their favorite as well. Recently, my daughter invited two college buddies to the house and told them "You must see this movie. It is my favorite movie in the world..." I love old things and historic architecture, so the setting of 1912 makes me love this movie ever more. But the premise of time travel is very believable to me. Einstein, the most intelligent man of our time (and perhaps all time) said "to those of us who are committed physicists, the past, present and future are only illusion, however persistent." If past, present and future are illusion, and we gain an understanding of the truth that counters that "persistent illusion", then movement through time could become as simple as movement through space, ie: from your kitchen to your living room, or from May 2000 to June 1912. Beyond the beautiful sets, the possibilities of time travel - there is also the love between the two main characters, played by Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. Their acting is first rate and their love affair is very believable. I loved this movie and would easily slip it into my top 10 favorite movies of all time.
Rating: Summary: My first and only love affair with a movie Review: If you have not yet seen this magical piece that will literally stop the passage of time for you, then a treat lies in store that forever will alter your appreciation of love and desire, magic and moment. I can think of no other movie that has hypnotized and transported me like this one has over the past two decades. In almost every respect the movie is excellent, but there is more about this that makes it a "once in a lifetime" cinematic experience: there is a magic about it that lifts and transforms you in the most wonderous way. The score is simply the best I've ever heard and also the most unforgettable. The violins enhance the stunning beauty of Seymour, augment the passion of Reeves, and seem to increase the elegance of the Grand Hotel. The period dress and mannerisms were so authentically recreated, "I was there!" While many films before and since have had better scripts, better acting, better effects, greater realism, and deeper plots, none that I know of approach the timelessness and sense of magic of "Somewhere In Time." It has a latent, beautiful power that can move you again and again, year after year. There is just something about this film that so transfixed me the first time I saw it, I can still remember where I was and who I was with (just like JFK's assassination), and no other film has ever done that to me. This has to be my favorite movie of all time.
Rating: Summary: A longtime favorite Review: I remember falling in love with this emotional film back during it's initial theatrical release, and now own copies of it in every format available. From the first I admired the attention to detail in this film. The reproducion of the world of 1912 is absolutely masterful. Imagine, a fantasy film without a single special effect or CGI shot. It's almost unheard of nowadays! I certainly don't think it's the greatest film ever made. The story could use a bit more depth, and the acting is weak in places. However, this hasn't stopped it from retaining it's special place in my heart these past 20 years. The incurably logical minded probably won't get much out of this picture. It's meant more for those who have a truely romantic, loving heart. I defy anyone who fits the above discription NOT to cry like a baby during the last ten minutes! That being said, I was somewhat dissapointed with the quality of the DVD version. Both the audio and picture are nowhere near as crisp as other disks in my collection. While it's nice to have a widescreen copy, this film really deserves a COLLECTORS EDITION with remastered video and audio, director and cast commentary tracks, deleted scenes and other goodies that seem to be part of so many DVD packages these days. Well, hopefully if Universal sells enough copies of SiT, I'll get my wish. So everyone please do your part and buy a copy!
Rating: Summary: One of the most beautiful love stories adapted on screen Review: I have to say that , when I saw this movie for the first time , I didn't expect from Jeannot Swarc something like this . It's without a doubt his best work , but unfortunately I'm not sure that a lot of french people know it . And it's a pity . For me , it was an unforgettable story , with two actors at the best of their talent . The ending makes me cry each time I watch it . I listen the music all the time . So watch it ! You won't be deceived !
Rating: Summary: Crafty Love Affair Review: I think every woman in the world believes she has a soul mate somewhere. I used to wonder, then I saw this movie, I knew it was true. We lived in the city just outside of where the movie was filmed, his dad works at the Grand Hotel, and it truely is a magical place. His name is Chris, the last time I saw him, I was running into his arms in front of the Hotel, just as she did. We had the most amazing relationship, I loved him more than anything, he was my first real, true love. It's been about two years now since we've seen each other, I think of him almost everyday, I miss him so much, I just hope he's happy. This movie, at first it made me think, like our names, Chris and Jayne, that's the names of the two stars, the location of the movie, thats where we met and where, 4 years later, said goodbye. This movie has made me mad, it's made me cry, it almost made me stop believing, but then I watched it again, and I remembered why it's so important to have a dreamy soul, you can't give up on happiness, and if you didn't have to work at it, it wouldn't be happiness. This is my favorite movie, it's my favorite memory, it's what always keeps me going when things get bad. I just think of it, or watch it, and I remember how I felt for those precious magical moments with him on that island. And I still love him, I always will.
Rating: Summary: five stars plus Review: This movie is my all time favorite. I watch it all the time, I need to buy a new one because the old is worn out. It is the classic romance. Men act like men and ladies act like ladies. I recommend this movie to everyone. Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour are the perfect pair for this movie. I would love to someday go to the Grand Hotel. WATCH WATCH WATCH! Don't forget the kleenex.
Rating: Summary: Somewhere in Time Review: This is the perfect rainy Saturday afternoon movie. Grab a cup of coffee or hot chocolate your favorite person to cuddle up with and watch a movie that will take you on a wonderful romantic trip. My wife and I have watched this movie at least 50 times.
Rating: Summary: It lasts forever! Review: I first saw this movie many years ago and have not been able to forget it. On a regular basis I track it down and revive the beautiful memories. It is my dream to go to the island where this film was set. It may not be technically perfect, but it is so worth viewing!
Rating: Summary: Intruiging Love Story Review: I am not one to go out and buy a romantic movie. But for some odd reason this fantasy based love story has always been one of my favorite movies. Perhaps its the acting, maybe the time travel aspect, I just don't know. This movie will touch you in a special way. I recommend it highly.
