Summary: "What if there is no tomorrow? There wasn't one today"
Review: Groundhog Day has a great deal of potential, but ultimately fails to live up to its promise. It isn't the concept that falls short; on the contrary, the plot is entertainingly original. Self-centred reporter Phil Connors aims to leave Pennsylvanian backwater Punxsutawney as soon as possible after completing a story on the annual Groundhog Day Festival, but his plans are thwarted when he wakes the following morning and discovers that it's Groundhog Day again. . . . . . . . . . and again. . . . . . . . . . Initially he sees this turn of events as akin to a nightmare, but soon realises that if there's no tomorrow, there are no hangovers and no consequences. . . . . . . . . .

A storyline like this is very amusing per se, and there are some deft touches - such as Phil's audacious money-van heist, which succeeds simply because after innumerable Groundhog Days in succession, he knows Punxsutawney's routines so well. Due to the inherent comedy, Bill Murray's wisecracking attempts as Phil are unnecessary, they don't fit well with his character, and frankly someone making a face like a groundhog isn't that funny the first time, let alone meriting repetition.

Although this is a comedy there are some genuinely thought-provoking issues raised - Phil learns (and through him we realise) that spontaneity can never be choreographed, and an impulsive moment's beauty lies in the fact that it 'just happens'. The film's biggest downfall is its predictability. Despite the various entertaining shenanigans en route, we just know that in the end Phil will have learned some Valuable Lessons and become a Nice Guy.

Overall though, Groundhog Day is a likeable movie, and would leave the viewer with a much greater sense of satisfaction had it - instead of showing the happy couple running hand-in-hand through the freshly fallen snow - used a less trite finale.

Summary: Groundhog Day
Review: In the hands of director, HAROLD RAMIS, a film that could have been dull and depressing, is an imaginative, funny and a surprisingly toughing comedy. However Groundhog Day is much more than just a funny film, it confronts a whole grey area in mainstream cinema, and is incredibly philosophical.

On top of all this, the film boasts some amazing performances. Most notably Bill Muarry and Andie MacDowell, in the leading roles. The chemistry between them in unequalled.

Summary: It's Groundhog Day!
Review: Harold Ramis's excellent film remains one of the best comedies of the 90s. Bill Murray is at his best as Phil Conners, a man stuck in Groundhog Day, taking his comedic routines to new heights and making the film rib-ticklingly funny. Both Murray and Ramis haven't found something as good as this since, especially Murray, whos'e wide comedic abilities are wasted in films like Charlie's Angels. But this one allows Murray to go crazy. Great film.

Summary: Over and over again, it just gets better!
Review: The star of this movie is Phil Connors (played by Bill Murray). The groundhog is also named Phil, Puxatawnee Phil, after the small town where the entire movie occurs.

Phil Connors is a man trapped by his shadow, his negative self. He's cynical, shallow, self-centered, and many other traits. Learning to see, and trancend this psychological shadow is the great stuggle of the movie.

It's easy to forget that this movie is a fantasy, because the experience of going through the motions, trying to get them right, trying to improve, is such a fundamental struggle in everyone's life.

This movie entertainingly balances the deep theme with the light hearted fantasy, making it a movie which can be appreciated by young and old -- for entertainment, or for insight. I know of a hypnotherapist who uses this movie to train her students, about how people change.

Watch it over and over again!

Summary: Never Grows Old - Excellent in any Medium
Review: In this incredibly funny movie, Bill Murray plays a misanthropic, egotistical, self-centered weatherman who must relive the same day repeatedly until he "gets it right". While it is a smartly directed, hysterical movie, it also serves a wonderful spiritual allegory of Soul's journey home.

Murray's character represents the unconscious Soul, who through repeated incarnations, slowly begins to learn the very direct cause and effect of his actions (karma). He sets his sights on trying to capture the heart of his quirky, down-to-earth producer. By mid-point in the film, he manages to do all the "right things" but his heart isn't pure and he receives a series of karmic slaps in a hilarious montage. He then abandons his quest for love and goes through a 'dark night of soul' spending a seeming eternity lying in bed. He reaches a breaking point and begins a series of suicides before finally realizing that Soul is eternal and cannot be destroyed. Slowly he begins to dig himself out of his rut.

By far this is Murray's best mix of commercial and creative success - not as over the top as 'Ghostbusters', not as serious as 'Razor's Edge'.
Highly recommended!

Summary: great movie, but a disappointing special edition DVD
Review: This is, of course, one of the best Bill Murray movies out there. However, a large part of the reason I buy or rent DVDs is for the extras, and on this DVD, they are just not worth it.

Having listened to excellent commentaries by Harold Ramis before (Bedazzled and Analyze This), I expected this one to be just as good or better, since this is one of my favorite movies. However, the commentary is a disappointment overall. There are a few interesting tidbits here and there, but there are also stretches throughout the movie where Ramis says nothing at all, and times when he recites the dialogue with the actors. Obviously this movie meant a lot to him, and he is understandably entertained by it, but that's not what a commentary is supposed to be about.

There is also a new 25-minute documentary about the making of the movie, which is a nice extra, but nothing great.

If you are a huge fan of this movie, you might want to rent it just for the chance to hear the commentary once and watch the documentary, but if I were you, I wouldn't waste my money buying it.

Summary: Downright Hilarious!
Review: You just have to love Bill Murray in this movie. This movie is one of my all time favorite comedies. I laugh just as hard every time I see it, and I have seen it so many times. Bill Murray is the reason why this movie is so funny. He is one of the funniest guys ever. He has this seriousness to him when he is making a joke that just makes it all the more funny. Of course if you are a Bill Murray fan, you have already seen this movie and I'm sure already have it in your movie collection. Even if you aren't, it's just too funny to not like. All I can say is, if you havn't seen this movie, you are missing out! You will laugh your head off!!!
