Summary: Amazing movie...now even better with Director's Cut
Review: Blade Runner has always been a great movie. The sheer atmosphere is oppressively powerful, and the moral issues brought up throughout the movie are just as strong. Harrison Ford, normally a bit cheesy in his acting, is just fine here, as is Rutger Hauer in one of his best roles. Ridley Scott, as always, does a practically flawless job of directing as well.However, the movie had always been a bit marred by the cheesy voiceovers(and even if they had put in a few of them, did they have to plaster Ford's voice over EVERY SECOND of the movie???). Also, that happy ending really didn't belong, no more than a happy ending would have fit in Casablanca(surely you don't disagree there?). Many times we like whatever version we see first and consider all others perversions of the "original" vision, but I have to say that this version is SO much better that it's shocking. The languid, downbeat feel of the movie is emphasized a bit more, which lets the atmosphere sink in even more, and the lack of those jarring, tacked-on bits helps the flow of the film immensely. I hadn't watched the original version for years before I first saw the director's cut, so I had forgotten the plot(beyond the fact that there's replicants and Decker goes out and kills 'em). However, despite what some people say, I had no problem following the plot without the voiceovers. To detractors of this cut, I really don't see what you like about the original that's better than this one. For the person who likes the slow, dark, atmospheric sci-fi film, this is the best one ever made(beats Dark City by a longshot).

Summary: This version is worthwhile but not superior to original.
Review: I was blown away by Bladerunner when it was in theaters and when it came out on video it was one of my first ever purchases of a videotape. Naturally, that tape was the original version with the voiceover and happy ending and without the unicorn sequence. Somehow that copy disappeared and I replaced it with the Directors Cut. I thought of the original as a five-star movie and I have to remove one for this version. I think the voiceover is a neutral factor, the uncertainty of the revised ending is slightly superior, but the unicorn sequence is a jarring disturbance. I had heard and read about the dream sequence for years before I saw it and I have to admit that if I had not been told that it was supposed to raise the question of Decker's humanity, it would have totally perplexed me. I am a reasonably intelligent person with a college degree and I just do not see how a fleeting glimpse of a unicorn suggests that Decker is a Replicant. Left on my own, I would have interpreted it to mean he wanted out of his "real" world and wondered why he had not gone offworld. Not only does the unicorn sequence seem out of place and unclear, it was unnecessary. All these years later, I can still remember debating the possiblity that Decker was not human with friends on the trip home from the theater based only on what we saw in the original version. Ridley Scott should have quit tinkering while he was ahead. However, buy this version if you do not have the original because it is still superior to the vast majority of what is labeled science fiction. Oh, by the way, buy the soundtrack too - it has some of Vangelis' most moving work.

Review: for anyone who rates movies low, when other people are giving it 5 stars, it usually means the person is making a comment about themselves. Anyone who may think the movie is boring or stupid, may just not understand the film.

Summary: Bladerunner for Cold Days
Review: This was a film about awesome and stunning ambiance, mood setting, music and an array of special effects with a stellar cast ( not bad for '82); That's as far as it goes. On the flipside the plot is thin, the acting is flat, and the action very subdued. This explains why half of filmgoers liked it and half hated it; There is no happy medium. I personally enjoyed all of the highlights mentioned above ! I remember first seeing this film on video release a few years back during cold and rainy winter weather. If you want to feel the moodiness of the film for all its atmospheric glory, then watch it on a fall or winter day/night. Just don't watch it if you're already in a foul or depressed mood. This movie is an excellent example if someone wants to know or experience cinematic atmosphere or setting.

Summary: Ah, but alas there are 3 versions of Bladerunner
Review: The directors cut seems to be the most prevalent. The unicorn is interesting and the "door only" ending is good. However the directors cut seems to drag in places. Then there is the "original." This has the voice over, the happy ending and the action seems to move faster. But, by far the absolute best version of bladerunner is the 75mm preview copy that was shown to the test audiences. This is the original original, or the or as I like to call it "The Directors Original Cut." This one starts with the voice over, but that is only there to get things going. There is the fish argument, where Ford asks for 4 fish and only gets 2. Also, the question of his being a replicant comes up in this one too. This version which tours independant theaters ends like the director's cut, has things that are in the directors cut, but it moves better and starts with a voice over. Also the source is in mint condition and clear as a bell. If you look at the fans in the opening interview scene, there is no motion blur and the colors are fantastic! You can actually see that the replicant is shooting a gun and the bullets are hitting the bladerunner! In all other versions this scene seems sort of wacky to me. The bladerunner just seems to explode and turn in its chair. If they are ever going to make another version of this for DVD it should be this version!!!

Summary: A 10 after I got older...
Review: I was 12 years old when the movie critic Gary Something? (The Bald man who hated every film it seemed) gave it a 10. My parents rushed us out to the drive in (What is a drive in you ask). Needless to say it was a bore. Not until I was in my late teen's did this movie get graced with my own 10. If you're expecting Star War's forget it. This movie is for people who enjoy pondering... For the effects artist this movie is eye candy. It could be released today and you wouldn't even wonder where the computer graphics are. Both strong visual and deep story line easily allows this movie to rival todays "Look at what we can do with a computer" effect movies... A must have classic (Classic? Crap I am getting old) :)

Summary: An utterly profound journey through the dark side of man.
Review: This movie was absolutely astounding. The setting was incredibly mesmerizing (there's a reason it's been copied over and over again, most recently by Fifth element and Dark City). Furthermore, the story explores the darker side of humankind through the treatment of replicants as machines and through the behavior of the replicants as they become desperate. A must watch for anyone who acknowledges that humans are not the blithe shells hollywood portrays them to be. The unicorn vision is essential to understanding deckard's identity, and if you were too dumb to catch on to that you probably had to get a 12 year old to post your review for you.

Review: I don't know how many time I heard from everyone how great this movie is. This movie is mentioned so many times every where and from everyone... so I finally rented it last night. Ok..... now, what is so great about this movie?!! It nearly bored me to death! I love movies and I'm not that picky but this has got to be the worst sci fi movies I have ever seen(I'm huge fan of sci fi and horror films by the way), and talk about over hype! I just can't see why so many people like it, my best friend almost fell asleep beside me, we were both very VERY disappointed. I like most of the movies from harrison ford but this one was bad.

Summary: Changes the entire meaning of the film.
Review: Absolutely the finest piece of SF movie making ever. It's set design is hugely influential to other, sometimes inferior SF films. The unicorn dream sequence is a brilliant insertion, now raising questions about Deckard's humanity (which was PKD's intent, in a way). And many people don't realize that the theme draws much from Milton's "Paradise Lost" and Shelly's "Frankenstein". Wouldn't you like to ask God why He has created you, given you but a short time to enjoy life, and then take it away? This is why there is a massive cult following of the film. It's viewers require a bit of smarts to fully grasp the film's philosophical questions.
