Summary: The DVD greatly improves upon the original movie
Review: This is one of those great DVDs with so many Special Features, you could spend days viewing them all. Most interesting is a feature-length 'rough cut' of the entire film with running commentary throughout. The rough-cut -- a combination of rough pencil animation and rare sketches -- even contains some deleted scenes. Best of all, there is a Heavy Metal Magazine cover (and back cover) gallery. In addition to being a nice showcase for some beautiful artwork, this section will really bring back memories for anyone who grew up with the magazine in the late 70s and 80s. Of course, the film itself never looked or sounded better than on DVD. The film itself was a nice attempt at capturing the spirit of the magazine -- it isn't a complete success, but a very noble effort in animation considering it was released in 1981!

Summary: a female point of view
Review: In looking through the reviews, it seems most (if not all) were written by men, so allow me to add my point of view. I thought the movie was great, regardless of the violence (which I don't think is that much compared to other movies I've seen) and how well-endowed the women were drawn (a rather irrelevant point for me). I agree that it is dated, but as that same person pointed out, there really wasn't much else available in the early 80's. If you keep that in mind as you watch it, the movie's really not that bad. I've always enjoyed animated films and still do and this was the first one - or one of the first - that wasn't made with only kids in mind. I still enjoy watching it from time to time and probably always will.

Summary: FLASHBACK
Review: I've had this on VHS for 20yrs. or so and I find it to be very entertaining both in the music and in the special effects and graphics. In its day it was beyond "state of the art" and today it is still worth watching. Excellent film. Especially for us 'BOOMERS' I find myself drawn to watch every two or three years.

Summary: HEAVY METAL has it all!
Review: Don't let some of these reviews fool you, HEAVY METAL isn't as bad as it seems! Rent or buy it and see for yourself. The wraparound story concerns a glowing green orb who tells a collection of stories to a young girl. I think the two best stories are the ones with the futuristic New York cab driver and the woman warrior who must battle a group of zombified enemies. There is plenty of sex (nothing hardcore)and blood-splattering violence, but I don't think this movie is getting the respect it deserves! I consider it a cult classic along the lines of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show".

Summary: Great film, but dated
Review: When you watch this film, you have to place yourself in the mindset of when it came out. Its early 1980's. Disney isn't doing animation like it used to. Japanamation isn't well known outside its own world, and audiences aren't used to R rated cartoons. When we look at it now the animation seems primitive in some scenes, but in other scenes its quite beautiful. Despite its title, don't expect your eardrums to be blown out. What was heavy metal back then seems more like bluesy hard rock to our modern ears.

Despite its age and minor flaws, I've chosen to add it to my movie collection. Whenever I watch it I will be reminded of a point in time of my life.

Summary: Stunning presentation
Review: Look. Heavy Metal is clearly a Boy's movie. If you're looking for "Terms of Endearment," look elsewhere. But if you like the art, the story, and the music, then the presentation on this DVD is flawless. Whoever packaged the extra features -- the making of documentary, the rough cut -- deserves a gold star. The only thing that kept me from giving 5 stars was the alternate audio track being the reading of a book rather than a "real" commentary.

Summary: One of the best non-Criterion DVD packages...
Review: ...and it all fits on one side of a disc! The full-length rough cut is worth the price of the disc all by itself. The rough cut features storyboards, sketches, early pencil animation, rotoscope models and finished bits edited together to form a facinating version of HM. It's really a breakthrough of form and is a great film on it's own merits. Add to this a bunch of deleted scenes, production sketches, a decent pair of commentary tracks, and a fun documentary (which features producer Ivan "Ghostbusters" Reitman and Kevin "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Mr. Julie Strain" Eastman). This adds up to hours of fun and film lecture. I loved it! (Oh, and the regular old HM looks fabulous on DVD too.)

Summary: THE BEST DVD OF THE YEAR!
Review: This is a great dvd of a great movie. They really put everything inside this thing(making of documentary, audio commentary, photo and art gallery, deleted scens, the works). The movie is one of the best animation I have ever scene. With all of these, you're actually getting a bargain.

Summary: Awsome one of the best animated movies to hit the big screen
Review: It was one to the first animated movies in the early 80's that was not afraid to hold back nothing: blood, guts, gore, sex, action, drama, comedy, and madness and of course 80's style Rock & Roll.
