Summary: I'm sorry...
Review: ...but I just will not give Lucas money for these desecrated versions of his films. The new scenes are lame, too PC, and the computer animated jabba the hut loses all his grotesqueness, which is what defined the character. so, I refuse to support this revisionist crap. ok, let the "review not helpful" votes begin...

Summary: GET A GRIP!
Review: I've just read a comment on these pages suggesting that Star Wars is a complete rip-off of Lord Of The Rings, which is probably the most stupid thing I've ever heard. George Lucas was inspired by myths, legends and fairy tales from centuries before Tolkien ever put pen to paper - the very same things which inspired Tolkien, in fact. They both used the central, defining themes and motifs from these to create their respective works. Some people seem to think Tolkien practically invented the written word ( not to mention the wheel and electricity, probably ) but in fact he was an ultra-conservative and mediocre writer with a fairly impressive imagination, THAT'S ALL. However, there is one thing that's certain - the recent, overrated LOTR films wouldn't EXIST had it not been for the original Star Wars trilogy, which paved the way for every other big-budget blockbuster (both good and bad) that has followed it.

Summary: A Fan of the Originals
Review: While I jumped at the chance to see episodes 4-6 in the theaters like everyone else, I really disagree with Mr. Lucas' whole philosophy behind 'fixing up' these movies. The added scenes and new effects do not mesh with the feeling of the original movies. I think it to be a grievous mistake to take movies from our past and change them to such a degree as Mr. Lucas has here. He might think he has the right since he made them originally, but they have long since become public property, and we, the fans, want our originals back. Please, Mr. Lucas, let us have them!

Summary: Great movies- bad versions
Review: I would buy this set if they included the original versions of the films. The versions included here are filled with overly cute crap, had have been sanitized for your protection (like the stupid change in the confrontation between Han and Greedo).

Go to e-bay and buy the videodisc and a videodisk player, and enjoy the original films.

BTW: I am not opposed to making some changing and cleaning up the effects, but I am opposed to stupid, pointless changes.

Summary: Bad Timing for once great films
Review: Fans have waited and begged for the original trilogy on DVD since the media was introduced. These special edition features are a nicely graphically enhanced product with some very poor plot additions Lucas felt were needed. Think about why now? Why not wait as Lucas said he would until the whole series was finished? With the lackluster releases of Ep1 and Ep2 combined with the long wait to the 3rd installment they need to keep people interested (yes they made money but no staying power). Not to mention the "special editions" that will come out after the last film hits dvd and boxed sets with whatever silly bonuses. They're planning to con people into ending up with 3 different DVD sets of the movies just like many fans fell into with the VHS releases. Personally, I have no interest in purchasing these. (...). Maybe George should pay attention to what his customers want and not to his flawed vision(...). Let them know you're dissapointed, wait to buy these things for a long while... it's not like there'll be a shortage.

Summary: A long time ago...
Review: Hurrah for this DVD, but from the packaging I can tell it will be a throw away when/if the (ultimate editions) of the 6 films come out.
For starters it isn't a trilogy it is 6 films (for now) and I wish people including Lucasfilm would quit calling it such.
I disapprove of the packaging like the Indiana Jones set. These movies should be marketed separetly (as Lucas probably wanted but the studio won out) I will toss the cover box as I did Indy's real fast and add the special features disc to the first in with a 2-disc slim box.
And studios quit making Fullscreen! 5 years ago!
And George hurry up with the (ultimate editions).
I want to see Vader and Sidious in a sabre duel at the end of Episode VI.

Summary: Original prints no longer available so these will have to do
Review: For those wanting the original releases on DVD (rather than the SE), George Lucas has stated that those film prints are no longer available. All that is left are the SE film prints, so you'll just have to live with the VHS tapes you have.

As for the SE on DVD - it's about time! However, I'm a little miffed that another version will come out as a 6-set DVD. Are these going to have even MORE extra features than what is already out there? What a scam. I'm getting tired of these re-releases.

But, enough harping. Episodes IV through VI are excellent in their own right. I myself, however, find the cute and fuzzy Ewoks a little more annoying than Jar Jar. Hey. Without Jar Jar, these episodes wouldn't have happened! So, you can't hate him THAT much right? He was the one that swung the voting in favor of creating a clone army, which eventually becomes the empire. Without his vote in the absence of the Senator, do you think we'd have these three episodes?

All in all, these are excellent movies. I also find Episodes I and II excellent as well. Do I have a favorite? That's really hard to say at this point. Each movie has it's own strengths and weaknesses in them. To me, Star Wars is more of a space cowboy movie rather than movies that explain the meaning of life. I think people who look for those "hidden messages" in these movies have nothing better to do. These movies are for the pure enjoyment of escapism. Even George Lucas has stated that at one point. It's a fantasy adventure that borrows from many of the action serials from the early days of movies. It's not meant to be anything else.

Finally, I can complete my collection (almost). Episode III is something I'm anxiously awaiting to see how it wraps up this segment and hopefully, gives an excellent bridge into the next three chapters of this excellent saga.

I can't wait to finally have these three episodes on DVD. Star Wars will have never sounded nor looked as good as they will when I pop these DVDs into my player!

Summary: Bout time, but too bad.
Review: You wonder why I give it 3 stars? My rating is not based on the movies, if it was it be a 5 out of 5, it's based on the decision made by Lucas to release the versions from the 90s after he added extra scenes and extra special features. I will still buy this, but only because I've been waiting so long...I just think Lucas should choose to release the original versions. Also I'd like to see a release for the Clone War series on Cartoon Network, but thats another story...(end music plays now and credits roll)

Summary: Avoid at all costs
Review: C'mon Children of the 70's, stay away from this set like you would the Plague...why you ask? Like any other kid growing up in the late 70's/ early 80's I lived breathed and dreamt Star Wars. But this box set coming out does not contain the movies we grew up on, but instead Mega Ego, er, I mean Lucas' "Special Editions" that he came up with 20 years later. If you want to expand on something fine, but leave the original version as it was for the people who remember and more importantly WANT IT THAT WAY!!!! The Who release re-mastered versions of their albums all the time but none of them are so far removed from the original that you can't recognize it. Star Wars from 1977 is a completely different movie from Star Wars the Special Edition 1997...know going in which one you are buying because chances are it's not the one you want...

Summary: Here They Come!
Review: Rivaled only by The Lord of the Rings, and with much of the same elements. It is interesting to note that The Lord of the Rings was influential in the creation of the Star Wars saga and Star Wars in turn influenced Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings.
Note that the battle on Hoth in Star Wars against the Imperial Walkers is adapted in Return of the King's battle against the elephants.

This edition arrives on Sept. 21 1994 as a 4 disc DVD set of the Special Editions only, with a new Making of Documentary.
It proves that George Lucas is a genius, and the Star Wars series is one of the very best in the history of cinema.
