Rating: Summary: Back when SNL alumni made movies you laughed with, not at! Review: Early 80s comedies always seemed to have those great one-liners you could recite ad nauseum among your friends like they were scripture. From "Blues Brothers" to "Fast Times" to "16 Candles" and the "Breakfast Club", there were no shortage of flicks to choose from. From "I was slimed" to "So she's a dog" to "Yes, its true. This man has no ****.", Ghostbusters was certainly one of the best. And Bill Murray (like he did in "Stripes", "Caddeyshack" and "Groundhog Day") steals the best of them (as well as the movie). There's just not an off-moment when he's on screen. His chemistry with Dan Akroyd and Harold Ramis, who play competent straight men while adding a few memorable lines of their own, is also excellent. (Akroyd: "Class 5 free roaming vapor. A real nasty one, too!" Ramis (when asked if he has any hobbies):"I collect spores, molds and fungus.") The pre-computer age special effects hold up fairly well with a few exceptions (the cartoonish 'slimer', the beams from the positron packs and the moving shots of Zuuls killer dogs). And there are even cool cameos in a humorous montage of the Ghostbusters on the cover of USA Today, Omni, The Atlantic, plus Larry King and Casey Casem. Less sophormic than "Stripes", more coherent than "Caddyshack" though not as smart as "Groundhog Day" it still holds its place well. Or as Murray proclaims, "We came, we saw, we kicked its ass!"
Rating: Summary: Ghost Busting Is Cool!! Review: Ghostbusters is by far the funniest movie ever made(if you don't count any others) it is alot beter than the 2nd one. Just don't be afraid of the stay puft man
Rating: Summary: An excellent movie, marred by poor conversion Review: 3 stars doesn't apply to the movie, which is a 5-star rating any day of the week, but to the poor translation of this movie to video. While the digital remaster greatly improves the quality of the film, the panning is totally obvious and wholly unacceptable. There is some bad panning in GB2, but not as much as here and it really is very distracting. A letterbox version would have been much more appropriate, and much better, than this. If you can find the previously released VHS edition, you'll enjoy it more even despite the poorer transfer quality. Otherwise -- this is an excellent movie and one that should be in your movie collection, even in this unpleasantly altered form. Few movies are this influential, nor this much fun.
Rating: Summary: Ghostbusters! Review: Who ya gonna call? I saw this movie a long time ago, but it still holds up. When parapsychology students Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd), and Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis) get kicked out of their university, the three men decide to go into business for themselves as - you guessed it...Ghostbusters. Their first customer: Dana Barret (Sigourney Weaver), who believes that a monster named Zuul has turned her fridge into a stronghold for supernatural activity. Together with the help of Winston Zedemore (Ernie Hudson) they must go face to face with Gozer and a couple of terror dogs. You better get some chocolate bars and graham crackers for this ending. Fantastically written by Dan Aykroyd.
Rating: Summary: Let's Kick some Ectoplasm! Review: This Movie is the first review for me on a movie so please bare with me. Ghostbusters the Movie is one Super Movie. Many ideas in this movie were based on the study of Ghosts and such. Much of the charctor of this movie that Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, and Sigourney Weaver add a great depth to the charctors and plot of this movie. There seems to be nothing lacking in this movie. Even the music in the movie is classic. Let me now review this dvd in detail:Movie charctors: This is where this movie stood out the most. Bill Really knew how to make the humor come out. There is so much to talk about in this movie. The extra charctors for little screens is another thing that made this movie such a hit. .. . . .100% Movie Plot: The story is pretty good tho I sometimes question some screens and over all I had wished they had left in the Pott /Ramis love thing. It hurt a tad. But over all this movie has a great Plot. . . . .95% Movie effects: Some of the best of the 80's anyways. Most effects worked great and made the movie work but once or twice I didn't really think the effect really did it's job. . . . .90%Dvd features: This one is good on this note. The deleted Scenes were not so good to me but the Commentary did work well. The drawings you also get to see really shows you how deep this movie was. . . . . .95%If you like this movie I suggest: Ghostbusters 2, Candyshack, SNL in the 70's - early 80's.
Rating: Summary: GhostbustersHermyTheGreatHasSpoken Review: I truly love this movie very much. I always have since I was thirteen. My mother had found the movie to be blasphemy, due to the references of Christian mythology towards the end of the movie. There was a scene where two ghostbusters talk about judgement day. I can still remember sneaking over to my friends to watch the movie. The one thing that makes this movie stand out, is that it had superheros who were average day guys. They were not buffed up like Rambo, and had no super powers. They were guys like me. See you always see attractive super models saving the world, but not in this movie. Nope in this one we get to see couch potatoes become saviours of the world. We get to see these average guys, start off just like us and become icons. This wonderful movie showed me that even a guy like me can stop an evil God. Oh and one more thing this is the God of one liners. (Back off man I'm a scientist) (Go get her ray!!) (Cats and dogs sleeping together, mass hysteria!!) You better go see this movie. It's a movie of biblical proportions.
Rating: Summary: One of the greatest comedies of all time Review: How can you not like this film? Ghostbusters was the first film to team Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ivan Reitman (the director) on one film. It went on to become one of the most successful films of all time. No other movie combined special effects, a cool story, funny characters, and action so well. This film captivated me as a kid and I love it today. This DVD has finally done justice to Ghostbusters, though a two disc version might have been even better. The two featurettes, one from 1984 and one from 1999, are a lot of fun. The deleted scenes are fun, thought it's obvious why they were taken out. The film is also much better in a widescreen version. Finally, the "visual" commentary is very funny too. Once you see this film, you'll never forget it for lines like "He slimed me."
Rating: Summary: No one can replace this movie! Except ghosts, maybe! Review: To have this movie on DVD is a real treat for me! Not only do I have the original widescreen version to the film, I also have the original theatrical trailer, deleted scenes, and commentary from Ivan Reitman, and Harlod Ramis! I could say about ten million things i liked about this movie, but I'll try not to blab too much (giggle)! It starts out with these three scientists (Bill Murray, Dan Aykroid, and Ramis!) who after losing their college grants become para-normal investigators & eliminators! The result is a very good movie that is both scary, and funny all together! When I started to learn more of the history of the movie, I was fascinated to discover Aykroid originally wrote it for himself and the late John Belushi who travel to the future, and become Ghostbusters! When Aykroid later showed it to director Ivan Reitman, Ivan liked what he read, but felt that it should be wise that they set it in modern-day New York, and bring Bill Murray on board! It worked so well that this movie later resulted in a sequel, and the famous cartoon series! "There's something strange in the neighborhood! Who ya gonna call? Ghostbusters!!!"
Rating: Summary: Terrible pan and scan ruins classic Review: This is a review for the VHS version of the film, which is why I gave it only 1 star. I love this movie, being turned on to it as a small kid and always making sure it was in my collection somehow. I bought this tape version before I got a DVD player, and was horrified at the way it was produced. The biggest problem is the pan and scan. Usually in a film it isnt that apparant where the scanning took place, but here the entire movie shifts as the tape struggles to show you everything on film. It's a jarring effect and takes away from the film completely. If you need this great movie, either by the original release or get the DVD. The DVD is the only way to relieve this awesome film.
Rating: Summary: The greatest comedy Review: Ghostbusters is one of the scariest movies ever. And its a COMEDY. Sure, many comedies are scary (Ever see any of the Revenge of the Nerds sequels?), but this one was INTENTIONALLY scary. It starts off with the para-psychology team (Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis) at Columbia University being taken off the University grant list, and the three men go into an unsearched frontier: PARANORMAL INESTIGATORS AND ELIMINATORS. Many may think that this is where the fun starts. Nope. Unlike many comedies (Meet the Parents, Mrs. Doubtfire), Ghostbusters starts off as extremely fun and stays there. The special effects, are still somewhat special (the ghosts are very well rendered and still entertaining after almost 20 years) and the story is briliant. This movie still could have been completely dependent on story and have no comedy in it. The entire film has a very timeless feel about it. The wardrobe, setting, and characters can still be indentified after all these years. The film grossed $240 million in North America alone, 8 times it's budget. It spawned three cartoon series, a great sequel, and a legion of fans. If you want something that will leave you howling, or something for your kids, this is the movie to get. Also, screenwriter Aykroyd WAS going to make another sequel, but fan favirote Murray definately does not want to do it (the script was reported to be "very good". I'm sure there's something that should be said about Bill's attitude... oh yeah: "He slimed me.".
