Summary: Back off man, I'm a scientist
Review: Ghostbusters has always been one of my favorite movies. As a kid, I watched it for the ghosts (especially Slimer, but then, he's every kid's favorite). I didn't get the sexual references back then of course, but I still knew a funny movie when I saw one. I wouldn't recommend this movie for every kid -- know your child. If they're afraid of, say, the wicked witch in the Wizard of Oz, the ghost in the library scene will probably scare them, as well as some of the other scenes. This is a funny, funny movie, but if you don't think your children can handle some of the scary scenes, wait until they're older.

The DVD edition is much better than the old VHS I had, which was actually taped off of cable and not the highest quality. The sound and picture has been cleaned up and is now of high quality (although alot of the special effects are still incredibly cheesy) and the director commentary and deleted scenes are great. I always love hearing the memories of the directors and writers when DVDs are released with this -- it makes things much more personal, and some of the stories make you laugh almost as much as the movie itself.

In summary, this is probably one of the best, if not the best, movie to come out of the 80's. A classic, which everyone should watch at some point. I'd rate this 10 stars if I could. "Let's run some red lights!"

Summary: Slime Time
Review: This classic comedy from 1984, holds up very well, some 18 years after its original release in theaters. Three University Doctors lose their funding and their jobs because of budget cuts. Dr. Venkman (Bill Murray), Dr. Stantz (Dan Aykroyd), and Dr. Spengler (Harrold Ramis) decide that the only way to go and make money is to become Ghostbusters. They promise to rid New York City of any "paranormal pest". Soon they are contacted by Dana Barrett (Sigourney Weaver), who has discovered that her apartment is a gateway that will unleash the end of the world, unless it can be stopped. Combining a great cast, a funny script (by Ramis and Aykroyd), and good special effects, director Ivan Reitman certainly knows what works. It also helps that Murray is one of the best ad-libbers around. Rick Moranis, Annie Potts, and Ernie Hudson, seem very happy to go along for the ride.

The DVD has a "live" commentary (ala the cult television series Mystery Science Theater 3000) by Reitman and Ramis that is very enjoyable. There are a handfull of storyboard to film coparisions, deleted scenes, a cool text commentary full of trivia, the vintage production featurette, as well as "new" interviews from 1999, and DVD-ROM stuff. The entire disc is a fun ride with solid extras Recommend for anyone looking to have a laugh or two and forget their troubles.

Summary: I AIN'T 'FRAID OF NO GHOST!
Review: I hope I don't get slimed, but "Ghostbusters" is one of the greatest classics (even though it's an 80s film haha) of all time!

Summary: Great 80s Flashback
Review: This movie opened one week after I graduated from high school on June 8, 1984. This DVD is a "must have" for those who collect 80s memories. I really like the commentary which includes Harold Ramis and Ivan Reitman telling stories of making the film, and the changes they made to Dan Ackroyd's original idea.

Summary: We are ready to believe you!
Review: Ghostbusters has to be one of the smartest comedies if not the smartest comedy ever made. It is an inventive and original concept that his brought to the screen through the unmatched comedic skills of Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd and Harold Ramos. Each of which play very different characters who come together to rid New York City of it's pesky ghost problem. Throw in a Babylonian er Sumerian God (Big difference) who is intent on destroying the world and you get one wild hilarious ride.

My favorite parts are Venkman and Dana's gone spoked date because Dana is possesed by Zule, the entire rooftop sequence where every line said is a classic, and the ballroom encounter with the beloved Ghost Slimer.

I think one of my favorites is when they first see the Marshmellow Man and Ray is babbling on about his childhood and Venkman says: "Egon, Ray has gone bye bye. What have you got?" Egon: "Sorry Venkman I'm terrified beyond the capacity of rational thought."

Try as some may I don't think there ever be another movie quite like Ghostbusters. Men in Black was close but not quite. The movie is so good you dismiss some of the less than ideal special effects. Even Reitman and Ramos make fun of some of the effects on the commentary track which I highly recommend because they are as funny with their commentaries as the movie itself.

Ghostbusters has to be up there on the funniest movies ever made list.

Summary: Who ya gonna call?
Review: "Ghostbusters" is one of the best 80's movies ever made! The DVD is great with special features including the original featurette and trailers and the 1999 star featurette. The movie deals with three scientists (Bill Murray/Dan Aykroyd/Harold Ramis) who got kicked out of university and decided to set up the shop in an old firehouse to become Ghostbusters trapping ghosts, spirits, haunts, and poltergeists for money. "Ghostbusters" is a movie for you to own on DVD, if you have a DVD player. I think you will not be disappointed.

Summary: A must have
Review: I personally don't like the way people give out five star ratings on Amazon.com. It is for this reason that I try to give a perfect score to something that truely earns it. Out of all the DVDs I own, I can't think of a single movie that earns the five star rating more than Ghostbusters does. I'm going to skip reviewing the movie, simply because as most know, it's a classic. The movie alone deserves a five. This review will be focused on the DVD.

Video: In the 18 years of this movie's existance, this is by far the best print you'll ever find. The movie is presented in its original aspect ratio of 2.35:1. There is no pixalation, no edge enhancement that I noticed, and no dirt on the print itself. It looks so good, you would never think the movie came out in 1984.

Audio: Again, this is the best the movie has sounded in 18 years. While it can't compete with new movies like Star Wars: Episode 1 that truely take advantage of 5.1 surround, it sounds reasonable good, considering how old it is. The music is crystal clear, as is the dialog. My only real complaint is the sound effects. Certain sound effects, such as the proton guns and explosions, aren't as dinamic as I would have liked, and they could have used more bass.

Extras: This is where the disc really shines. The audio commentary is easily the most entertaing commentary I have ever heard. There are three featurettes: one from 1984, which is very good; one from 1999, which is merely average; and a special effects featurette, which is also very good. There are ten deleated scenes, all of which are different from the ones that appeared on the Criterion lazerdisc. The scenes range from OK to just plain bad. It's easy to see why they were removed. There is a storyboard to film comparison, as well as a before-and-after special effects comparison. There are four trailors: Ghostbusters, Ghostbusters II, Stripes, and Groundhog Day. The GB trailor is pretty good, while the GB II trailor is pretty awful. Another interesting feature that makes a nice companion to the commentary is tricks and trivia. Taken from the 1985 book, Making Ghostbusters, little subtitles appear at the bottom of the screen, providing facts about the scene. Finally, there is concept art for all the films characters, key events, and the logo. This DVD is three years old, but it can still hold its own extras wise.

I can't recommend this DVD enough. The video, sound, and extras are all excellent. Add to that the price, which is extremely low for a DVD of this quality, and you have a must own DVD.

Review: What can I say. Not one word can summarize this movie. Its simply the greatest film ever.......filmed.

Summary: Comedic Masterpiece
Review:

This charmer is something I'm proud to have watched in the theater with my family when I was 10. It's only gained appeal since 1984. This is a rare, perfect movie - an incredibly hilarious ride. The story is top-notch, the comedic vision is great and perfectly mixed with an engaging storyline. This movie will probably never be dated, and is so original it's never spawned cliches.

PS - Ghostbusters, the cartoon series, had some surprisingly adult, entertaining storylines as well, just in case you need some more 'busting and didn't like Ghostbuster 2 that much. 2 wasn't nearly as good a movie, but not outright bad, either. It's hard to top perfection.

Review: This DVD rocks. Not only does it bring a digitally remastered version of the classic to us, but the special features really measure up to the legendary film as well. Probably one of the most fun interactive menus I've seen on a DVD, and the commentary and other features only add to the overall effect. Great movie, great DVD.
