Summary: One of the funniest, and most quoteable, movies ever
Review: Ivan Reitman's greatest triumph, Ghostbusters, is really at it's core fun. It never takes itself way too seriously and even is it might scare kids at first (I know the big dog scared me as a kid), it is something that can grow on anyone, especially line wise. It is goofy in it's approach to the supernatural, and it is really helped along the way by Murray (funny as always), Aykroyd, and Ramis (the two also wrote the movie). A gas.

Summary: Reasons to See Ghostbusters
Review: 1. The actors smoke cigarettes. 2. The bad guy is from the EPA. 3. It's actually funny.

In other words- in 1984 it was a blockbuster, today it's subversive.

Summary: Kid's stuff then - and now.
Review: At eleven years old when GHOSTBUSTERS was released, I was absolutely enthralled with this film, as seemed to be everyone in my age group. Repeat viewings at the theater and on video never failed to thrill me. Revisiting this deluxe DVD, then, over 15 years later, the appeal has faded.

First, the story is only mildly interesting. The concept is original enough, but where are the ghosts? We watch the team assemble, ONE ghost get captured, and the rest is downhill from there, with the (anti)climax of the film exhibiting the worst of special effects that otherwise have not aged too poorly. The coming of Gozer is anticipated throughout half of the film and his/her/its appearance can only be described as thoroughly disappointing. Replaced quickly by the equally quickly vanquished (and painfully un-cute, un-scary, and un-funny) Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man, the end of the world threat and any last hopes for redemption of this film are destroyed in the final ten minutes.

One could easily argue that GHOSTBUSTERS was the first in the horror-comedy genre, followed by similarly themed (and equally disappointing) films such as TEEN WOLF, HOUSE, and MEN IN BLACK. But where is the horror? And, more importantly, where is the comedy? At eleven years old this film floored me, but I barely cracked a smile upon my most recent viewing. Bill Murray gets the few decent lines in the film, and even those would have fallen flat delivered by any other actor.

All of that said, I was not too enthusiastic to spend any more time viewing extras on this DVD. I did, however, check out the much-lauded "live"-style commentary track, hoping that, in the MST3K spirit, those involved would at least poke fun at the film. No such luck. Not even as interesting as any run-of-the-mill DVD commentary, this one simply annoys as one wonders exactly why they bothered to add those silhouettes.

If you enjoyed GHOSTBUSTERS as a child, hold on to that memory. Don't let it be ruined by a repeat viewing of this letdown. You may want to show it to a child you know - maybe they can explain why we liked this film so much.

Summary: Great DVD
Review: This is a fantastic DVD. The menu is pretty cool, with the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man walking around through New York City. This DVD includes Dolby Digital Surround version 5.0, and great picture quality in widescreen video format. It has Mystery Science Theater 3000-style live audio commentary, enhanced bass & treble for the audio tracks, and about 3-5 deleted scenes. However the deleted scenes are in just awful picture quality, but that's cool 'cause they were deleted. This has always been one of my favorite comedies and truly one of the funniest parts is when the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man begins his walk through New York. Another one is the laughable first appearance of Slimer, the skit with the man & Bill Murray (as Dr. Peter Venkman, who arguably had the best lines in the series of the 2 films) in the lobby of the hotel which Slimer was haunting, the skit with Dana (one of the main characters) and Dr. Venkman in a square of a town when Venkman sort of disses out Dana's musician friend, and many other funny scenes. This DVD also includes trailers for other films (Ghostbusters 2 among them, but I don't really reccommend that film or DVD because it wasn't that good; it was good, but the first one is always better except in the case of the Mummy Returns & the Mummy of the recent years). Get this DVD if you're a child fan of the Ghostbusters, a now-adult who was fans of the Ghostbusters when you were little, or if you're looking for a good comedy and a good film.

Summary: Ghostbusters
Review: Only 5? I would rate this movie a ten on scale of 1-5! It is the funniest movie. I mean, a giant, Stay Puft marshmellow man, attacking New York, it is halarious! There is none stop comedy and who can resist that song by Ray Parker Jr. Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, and Rick Moranis are great. This was the greatest movie ever, it is a must buy!!! I can't say I recall seeing Ghostbusters 2, but I don't care the first one was funny enough to make me by the second and third if they ever made one!

Summary: Classic Comedy
Review: "Ghostbusters" was great when it came out,and keeps getting better. With it's pitch-perfect blending of eye-popping visual effects,surreal,Saturday-morning cartoon atmosphere, and deadpan irony, the film really was something different, and has yet to be equalled in all those elements(though "Men in Black" and "Mars Attacks!" come close).Starring Dan Aykroyd,Harold Ramis, and national treasure Bill Murray, the film centers on three scientists who are,er,asked nicely to leave thier positions in a college science department because of thier rather, well, unorthodox theories.Out of desperation, they go into business for themselves as "Professional Paranormal Investigators and Eliminators".To finance the venture, they put a third mortgage on Ray's(Aykroyd) house--Peter(Murray):"It's O.K.,Ray,lot's of people have three mortages on thier house!"Ray:"But at nineteen percent? You didn't even haggle with him!"So begins a fabulously entertianing ride of outragous encounters and hysterically funny one-liners.This film could contian the highest number of classic quotable lines in history.Everyone has thier own favorites, and mine is when Ray confronts his client-turned-love-interest Dana Barret(Sigourney Weaver) after she becomes possessed by an evil spirit that's taken over her building--Murray knocks on the door, and the usually conservative and demure Barret answers as a demonic, sensual sex-pot--Peter:"That's a different look for you isn't it?" Dana:"Are you the key-master?" Peter:(pause)"Not that I know of."Bill Murray's comic genious has never been displayed in all it's glory better than in this film, and he gets great support from Aykroyd's amiable enthusiasm and Ramis' drier-than-dry wit.Rick Moranis also gives a great performance as Dana's nerdy neighbor Louis. The duluxe DVD repackaging with all the goodies is very welcome, especially if you're accostomed to seeing the film in the dreaded "pan-and-scan" versions heretofore available, which caused you to miss most of the action. Now you can appreciate the impressive scope and lavishly mounted production in all it's glory. Also nice is the MST3K style running commentary by Harold Ramis and director Ivan Rietman, that is often as entertaining as the film. This edition of the film finally gives this great classic the presentation it deserves.

Summary: BORING! - but nice DVD...
Review: The only people who seem to like this movie are the ones that saw it in the theater when it came out. It's called nostalgia. For anyone watching this movie for the first time on DVD, you will be very disappointed.

The DVD itself has a very high quality transfer and excellent extra features. So if you are already a fan, you will be very pleased indeed.

Summary: An older film with year 2000 DVD options!
Review: For most DVD films today, you need to purchase a recent release to watch a film that takes advantage of the many options available through DVD. (ie older films that contain the movie, trailer and sound/viewing options only)

Ghostbusters has done a remarkable job in creating a comprehensive DVD that beats out most modern movies released on DVD. Trailers (for this and other films), FX commentary, director commentary, storyboards, the making of FX, trivia, etc...

For all 3 people in this country that haven't seen Ghostbusters :D, it's a unique combination of comedy and horror that doesn't disappoint. Some of the best comedians from the 70's to today and a laugh fest that doesn't stop.

If only other classics did such a great job in turning a memorable film into a thorough DVD masterpiece...

Summary: One of the best DVDs so far
Review: I won't get into the plot of the movie, because unless you have been in a coma the last 20 years you've seen the movie. I think of this film as one of my favorite films of all time, and one of Bill Murray's best roles.

This DVD has a letterbox aspect ratio, and great sound, considering how old the movie is. There are trailers for several films here, including GB2. they also have as a seperate feature 10 deleted scenes, some of them being actually quite good. And a VERY FUNNY commentary with Ivan Reitman and Harold Ramis. there are featuretted galore here, as well as multiple-angle bonus footage, and storyboards. This is one DVD that will keep you occupied for a long time. And the menu is very cool as well.

Summary: "Ghostbusters" on DVD
Review: "Ghostbusters" was one of my favorite films growing up, and it still holds a special place in my heart today. And in addition to that, it's a really great movie; possibly one of the funniest comedies of all time.

"Ghostbusters" is the tale of Dr. Venkman, Dr. Stantz, and Dr. Spengler, (Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd and Harold Ramis)who all are researchers of paranormal psychology at a university in New York. When the university downsizes, they are let go, and are forced out onto the street to fend for themselves. So, what do they do? They start a "ghost-busting" business in New York City. What's so great about this movie obviously isn't the story, it's the characters. Our three heros are so compatible and play off of eachother so well, that I'd watch them doing almost anything. The film also stars Sigourney Weaver and Rick Moranis.

The DVD of "Ghostbusters" is truly exsquisite and one of greatest DVD's out there. Among many special features are theatrical trailers for "Ghostbusters", "Ghostbusters 2", "Groundhog Day" and "Stripes". The DVD also includes about three documentries: One from 1999, one from when the film was first released and one just about the special effects. All three are very informative and interesting, running at about ten minutes a piece, give or take. Another great feature on this DVD is the scene-to-storyboard comparison. The scene that this feature highlights is the scene in which Murray, Akroyd and Ramis persue, and are persued by the ghost eventually to be named "Slimer" in the hotel. This comparison is quite interesting. The best overall feature on this DVD though, has to be the feature-length commentary by actor/co-writer, Harold Ramis; director/producer, Ivan Reitman; and Joe Medjuck, the associate producer of the film. Besdies being funny and informative, what's so special about this commentary is that the silhouettes of the three commentators can be seen at the bottom of the screen (optionally), much like "Mystery Science Theater 3000." Other features include ten, fun deleted scenes, conceptual drawings and a trivia section. The animated menus are great too!

This is a great movie and a great DVD, especially for a Bill Murray fan. This is an essential for any DVD collector.
