Summary: . . . .Something to OFFEND . . . .e v e r y o n e . . . .
Review: ....and isn't that the POINT?? I was nine when the MARS ATTACKS cards came out, and being a BIG Jack Davis (Funny Valentines/Wacky Plaks) fan, and having cut my teeth at seven in the Rio Theater, Saint Louis, MO on "Invasion of the Saucer Men" (YES they were under my bed when I got home with Dad!), I simply HAD to buy a pack! I can smell the wrapper, taste the gum to this day. I can also take you to the schoolyard behind East Richmond Elementary and to the spot where the trash can used to be. I THREW THE CARDS AWAY before I got home and Mom caught me with them or found one in a jeans pocket in the dirty laundry! The cards' spirit lives on in the movie! At the theater, where I previewed the flick to determine WHY Tim didn't necessarily want my prepubescent sons to see it, I was moved.... to tears of wonder (saucers through space/opening credits), tears of joy (Elfman's Hermannesque score), and tears of hysteria (Annette Bening's dead-on AA scene). I was shocked by the JFK/Martin Short bits, revolted by the BeeGee's trailer scene, and outraged by the blasphemy of Tom Jones. My patriotic sensibilities were stung time and again (I am a VietNam and Desert Storm Veteran) . . . .""Nevertheless"", I marvelled at the perfect pacing (Martians preparing for final assault: manning the robot, "to arms!", etc.), the great color (autopsy scene) and perfect special effects. I voted it my favorite movie -with reservations- of 1996 and just bid on another silver saucer toy ..! . . .When it came time to watch the ... VHS, I only invited my sons (NO GIRLS ALOUD!), ages 7 and 9, who had seen my muted/sanitized version of "THE MASK" already. I told them to prepare for something like that, and we had a BALL! I fast-forwarded the fornicators and muted the Lord's name. We had a BALL! Would recommend a parental review and discretionary viewing with the BOYS ONLY. After all, Isn't Tim Burton one of us?

Summary: The bottom of the pile.
Review: This is probably the most humourless, pile of putrid garbage I have ever seen in a movie. I can't believe so many people like this. It is moronic. It was excruciating to have to sit through it. I would rather be bored with nothing to do, in fact I would rather be in the dentist's chair that see this appauling insult to my good taste again. The people who like this are morons with no taste who are easily pleased by anything. This is a definite contender for my "Worst movies ever" list. Get a life!!!!

Summary: Mars Attacks is not that bad.
Review: I think peole should buy this movie because it isn't that bad. I loved the movie because it was so funny to me. When the martians said they'd come in peace I laughed because I knew they weren't coming in peace, because there wouldn't have been a movie otherwise. This movie didn't make me feel bad like some people wrote. You should buy this movie because it is funny.

Summary: sci fi drama not meant to be funny
Review: that doesnt mean you wont enjoy it. the animation and special effects are note worthy. the all star cast adds plenty of realism to something that should seem more lame. this could end up being a cult film.

Summary: A Must For Tim Buton Addicts
Review: I am a huge Tim Burton fan.He is my favorite film-maker,and I treasure every inch of celluloid that his fertile, wonderful imagination has produced.Several of his films have provided defining moments in my life(I don't think I could've made it through middle school without "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure",and I distinctly remember actually winning a job after showing up at the interview profoundly inspired by Ed Wood's can-do brovado).I felt I had to qualify this review by first stating that,as "Mars Attacks!" is probably a bad place to start for those who don't feel the connection to Burton's work that I do.Looking at the film from an objective, critical standpoint(nearly impossible for me),it's easy to see why some might find it a bit,uh,well, underwhelming. It's based on a rather obscure soarce,a series of trading cards from,I think, the fifties or something and it plays out like one huge, massively produced in-joke.It's one that will rigidly polarize it's viewers:you'll either think it's the best thing sinse "Citizen Kane",or you'll angrily demand your money back from the video store.I am,of coarse,in the former category.I think this film is hysterically funny, and a spot-on satire of over-blown sci-fi epics to boot. All of it's all-star cast, including Pierce Brosnan as a condescending scientist,Sara Jessica Parker as a vacuous fashion reporter,Micheal J. Fox as a long-suffering cable news correspondant(and Parker's husband),and Annette Bening as a ditzy but well-meaning new-age crystal-gazer,are all great, but the stand-outs are Jack Nicholson,in two roles(as the President and Bening's sleazy Vegas philanthroper husband),and Natalie Portman as the shrewd First Daughter(she has the second-best line of the film:"I guess it wasn't the dove!").But who really steals the show is the priceless Sylvia Syndney, who plays Lukas Haas' grandmother, she runs away with the film every time she delivers a flawlessly timed line-"They blew up congress!","I think it's my music...",among other gems. But,really the entire film is full of classic moments for those particularly receptive to them, and this is highly recommended for you.All others, well, like I say,I understand if you don't get it.

Summary: If you know what to expect, you'll love it!
Review: I have read some absolutely horrific reviews for Mars Attacks! while browsing on the internet. I personally believe that all of the bad reviews are hogwtash because the critics were reviewing it as a cultured, intellegent science fiction film. If you look at it from that perspective, it would seem horrific. But Director Tim Burton wants us to look at it from a campy, cheesy 1950's spoof perspective; kind of like an Ed Wood movie. If you look at it from that perspective, you'll love it! I heard one person who hates almost all of Tim Burton's films without even knowing it say it the worst, dumbest movie he had ever seen! Of course he wasn't looking at it in the correct point of view. Tim Burton made this movie to be a tribute to Ed Wood, who was probably the worst director of all time. I personally like the special effects. They look absolutely gorgeous, but at the same time are obviously fake; which is something you will probably never see in any other film. So, on behalf of all the Tim Burton fans, I give Mars Attacks! my highest recommendation.

Summary: Satire is not nearly as fun, or funny, as it's source movies
Review: Tim Burton's Mars Attacks spins wildly, and delightfully, out of control during its final forty minutes and it's one heck of a ride. Sadly the build up is a tad dry and slow, being a bit too faithful to the plotless meanderings that served as "character development" in the disaster films of the seventies. Nonetheless the sadistically goofballish Martians make this flawed movie worth repeated viewings.

Summary: Sucked .....
Review: This movie could have been good, instead it's stupid and lifeless. Watching paint dry would be more entertaining. Don't waste your time on this BOMB !

Summary: thoroughly enjoyable, whacky scifi satire
Review: "Mars Attacks!" is good, clean fun, but it may not satisfy an audience that needs a humorless and socially "appropriate" message. It offers no concessions to anyone's narrow preconceptions of what a movie must have or be in order to receive approval. At its core is a very pleasing set of ingredients that meld beautifully, including but not limited to: (1) a love of traditional 1950-'s/1960's pulp scifi, reflected (for example) in its visually breath-taking homage to the stop-motion animated effects from the vintage film "Earth Vs. The Flying Saucers", and its choice of the Mars Attacks bubblegum card series as its basis; (2) a love of traditional American popular culture and entertainment, epitomized by the Tom Jones role, casino setting, TV-show auspices of some of its characters, etc.; (3) a wildly irreverent and satirical take on the time-honored hokum of scifi--"take us to your leader/we come in peace", and a lot of other corny stuff really gets its due here; (4) and most unexpected of all, a wonderfully sweet and innocent sentimentality that emerges in the treatment of its characters, especially those in a class sometimes fashionably dismissed as "trailer trash" by the Jerry Springer crowd (you know, the we're-all-fools-and-nothing-matters-as-long-as-we-can-laugh-at-everyone-but-ourselves crowd). This is a unique, one-of-a-kind of movie, but the closest thing it has to a message (for those who absolutely must have it) is that not everything we encounter in this mysterious thing we call life is going to have a rationale to suit our indignant, petty demands, and we can either get over it, or get hung up about it. Our choice. There is nothing preachy here, nothing politically correct, nothing designed to appeal specifically to the jaded cynicism of the painfully hip and terminally bored crowd. Just solid, high-energy, visually dynamic fun wrapped in a hilariously dry, devastating wit that delivers. This movie also establishes the definitive value of Slim Whitman's music, something that always eluded me before. I'll never have to gnash my teeth again at the sound of his music again. Thank you Tim Burton!
