Summary: You'll never make a Monkey out of me!!!
Review: I love this film. I really do. It falls into the same category as Star Wars for me, in that I actually prefer the late 60's look, and filming style, to the modern approach, with special effects coming out of the films (metaphorical) bottom. The story itself, and as in my other reviews, I'm not going to give a complete run down (as most reviewers do) as it has already been done by these wonderful people at Amazon, but I will tell you why you should buy it. IT HAS MONKEYS...... LOTS OF THEM. Any film that has this many monkeys in it, was always going to be a sure fire success. It is a long known fact, that when you put monkeys in a film, that it is going to be successful. Think about it, any film, TV series or animated show with monkeys in it is a favourite. I think 20th Century Fox knew this, and that's why they made this movie, and kept on making them. Return to planet of the Apes, Beneath Planet of the Apes, Next Door But One To The Planet Of The Apes etc. The acting in this film is always a bonus to me when I watch it.... from Mr Hestons famous "Get your hands off me you damn stinking ape" or words to that effect, to Monkeys with such interesting names as Dr Zaeuss (haven't got a clue how it's spelt). It is a clever movie, with a great message in it, and one of the most vivid and awe inspiring end shots in movie history.... apart from the bit in Independence Day when it said "The End", one of my personal favourite parts of the movie. Buy this DVD, it is great, and although I love Tim Burton, I still feel that it has more to offer as a movie, as a piece of art, as a Monkey fest than the new 2001 version. As an after thought, If you like this movie, you should see a film called 'Monkey Shines'.... it has monkeys with knives in it?!!! Cool!!

Summary: Human see, human re-do
Review: If Tim Burton's remake of this science-fiction classic is even half as good as the original, that would be great, because what could have been nothing but high camp in this film comes off strong and intelligent instead. Charlton Heston may be politically to the right of Atilla the Hun, but he's one hell of an actor with the right role, and astronaut George Taylor is one such role. Maurice Evans, Kim Hunter and Roddy McDowell are also sympathetic and forceful under pounds of simian make-up. The direction is crisp, the screenplay is appropriately Twilight Zone-ish considering that Rod Serling had a hand in it, and one of the true secret weapons that wins the viewer over to this movie is Jerry Goldsmith's freaky, frightening score. The sequels to this film were nowhere near as good as the first, so one can only hope that the new version remembers it's roots. Great film!

Review: This film is brilliant on so very many levels.Charlton Heston is easily the most significant actor of the latter half of the 20th century. Ben-Hur, Soylent Green, The Ten Commandments, El Cid, and more - but Planet of the Apes stands alone as one the most powerful, complex, and intriguing movies ever made. Heston plays Colonel Taylor, an American astronaut sent into the future, under suspended animation, when his flight is mysteriously interrupted. He has aged eighteen months, but he has travelled 2,000 years into the year 3978. He wakes up on an unknown planet, inhabited by primitive humans who cannot speak, and a society of intelligent apes who rule them, with the power of speech, reason, and with curious social complexities that mirror humanity on Earth. There is a class structure between the militaristic gorillas, the working class chimpanzees, and the more cerebral and spiritual orangutans. There are scientists, schools, museums, clerics, politicians, teenagers, lawyers, and judges. In other words, apes are like Earth's humans, and humans are like Earth's apes. A few key apes discover the existence of the intelligent human Taylor, and while some quietly seek to study him, others engage in a secret and deceptive political tug-of-war to destroy him, out of fear that public knowledge of his existence could potentially destroy everything the apes believe in, wreaking havoc on their society's foundations. The full extent of the apes' fear is revealed continously as the film progresses, all the way to a stunning twist that placed this film in history as one of the all time classics. The amazing premise allows the film to explore a myriad of very real issues - race relations, animal cruelty, archeology and the potential hypocrisy of historical analysis, teenage rebellion, class warfare, Darwinism, science vs. religion, and the fallacy of either side pretending to know more than they really do, and more, all done brilliantly, creatively, and in such inventive ways that you don't even realize some of the powerful statements the movie is making while you get caught up in the excellent story itself. Each time you review this film, you uncover another statement or twist or insight. In short, Planet of the Apes is the epitome of what a brilliant science fiction story should be. One creative scene to look for: Taylor is on trial before a tribunal who charges him with heresy, since his existence is thought by some to undermine the religious tenets that "all apes are created equal", excluding humans from that list. As Taylor's chimpanzee supporters defend him and an excellent debate unfolds, each of the three orangutans sitting on the tribunal ignores him - the first covers his eyes, the second covers his ears, and the third covers his mouth. The picture is a "see-no-evil, speak-no-evil," ... you get the idea. It's subtle - looks great on wide screen, but very subtle on standard - and is only a small part of the rich presentation of message, irony, insight, and fascinatingly unique perspectives on issues that affect nearly everyone. The music is strikingly haunting. Watch this movie late at night by yourself, and the music alone will freak you out. And the makeup alone is worth the entire picture. In short, if you haven't seen this movie, you're missing a major portion of film history. So watch it!

Summary: Birth of a franchise
Review: "Planet of the Apes" is fantastic entertainment. A crew of astronauts crash on an unfamiliar planet, only to discover it's ruled by talking apes. The apes hunt the local mute humans and use them for scientific experimentation. When Charlton Heston (one of the astronauts)is captured, he impresses kind chimpanzee scientists Zira and Cornelius becasue of his ability for speech, but the other apes are not amused; their religion dictates that apes, not humans, are God's chosen. The movie's famous twist ending not only deepens the meaning of everything that's come before; and gives great reason for sequels.

Summary: Great movie w/ terrific plot twist! So why give ending away?
Review: Terrific movie is deserving of 4 stars. Poorly-conceived DVD/VHS packaging is worth 1 star. I saw 'Planet of the Apes' years ago, and to-date it remains one of my favorite SF movies. It had one of the best surprise endings of all time, ranking up there with the likes of 'The Sixth Sense', 'The Usual Suspects', 'The Sting', 'Wild Things' and 'No Way Out'. I noticed that the cover of both the DVD and VHS versions (as shown on Amazon.com) gives away the ending of the movie. Now this doesn't make any sense to me whatsoever. I guess some marketing genius at 20th Century Fox believes that everyone has already seen this movie and knows the ending, without thinking that there might be a whole generation of kids who have never seen the film. Since the DVD version will not be released until 21st August 2001, may I suggest to the folks at 20th Century Fox to change the packaging if it is still possible.

Jerry Goldsmith's score is sensational, and so is the photography, makeup, and acting of the rest of the cast of PLANET OF THE APES--especially virtually silent human leading lady Linda Harrison!--but it's Charlton Heston as Taylor--running, fighting, shooting, laughing, kissing, and finally, escaping the apes--that makes this the second best science fiction movie ever made, second only to FORBIDDEN PLANET. Heston turned down the lead role for the sequel, BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES--he later said in an interview, "I thought at the time that as an actor I was above sequels, but later I discovered what Sylvester Stallone and others found out, that there's a lot of money in sequels!"--and he was very good in his later science fiction movies like SOYLENT GREEN and THE OMEGA MAN, but PLANET OF THE APES IS CHARLTON HESTON'S BEST MOVIE!!! Summary: One of the greatest sci films of all time
Review: Words cannot accurately describe this cinematic gem. The story and plot of this movie keep you fascinated throughout, right up to the unbelievable and well done ending. This is by far the best Charleston Heston film. His acting talents are well known in other great epics like Ben Hur, but this one shines above them all. This is a must see for all sci fi fans.

Summary: It gives an "what if"
Review: WOW. What if those apes took over? What if those apes got smart? What would happen? This is a truely awesome movie. I mean when "Bright Eyes" finds out it was earth after all, I could only imagine what he felt. It gives the messge to be careful of science and not to always take a smart pet into ur house. Like in the sequals. THE APES ARE COMMING! I cant wait for the remake this summer!

Summary: Still chillingly effective
Review: Charlton Heston is simply great as the asronaut Taylor. His face perfectly conveys the feelings Taylor is having throughout the whole film. He starts out hating the human race, then becomes their principal defender, and finally sees his original feelings borne out in the shocker conclusion that I won't dare give away. The very underrated Roddy McDowal shines through all the makeup, and in fact all the ape actors are excellant. I don't think the film is anti-religious or anti-government because all the apes' assertions are actually proved true. Too bad the budget couldn't create the technologically advanced world of the book, but it's still a good ride.
