Summary: beyond the book
Review: If you really want to know what this film is about you must first read Nietzsche's "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" -- It is no coincidence that the title music theme is of the same name. Nietzsche's book is the key to not being 'bored' in the movie, Kaufmann's is the best translation.

Summary: Beautiful...
Review: After reading all of the other reviews, I'm not sure if i have a very good television set, or a very bad pair of eyes. I just watched this DVD again, and must say that i found it to be a very good quality reproduction, i did not notice any flickers or ghosts, and the sound quality was excellent. I think it is a good buy, but rent it first, just in case...

Summary: Classic movie, disappointing transfer
Review: The movie is great. Enough said.

The DVD is good, but not as good as I had hoped. The sound is clean, but old sound is rarely good sound in modern sound systems. The video transfer is good, but I suspect the source material wasn't pristine since there is both graininess and some spotting. But it's probably the best transfer and picture you can buy for this classic (until a digital high-definition transfer and video replay equipment), so how can we legitmately complain?

Too bad Amazon does not have separate ratings for technical quality and movie quality -- geek that I am, I'd like to see these categories separately. Widescreen Review (magazine) also rates sound and picture separately.

Summary: The movie made no sense, despite awe-inspiring moments.
Review: Sure, the scenes with the monkeys and the monolith held me in abeyance, but the movie made no sense. What was the director on? What the hell was the scene with the aged astronaut in the room toward the end of the movie? Even more baffling was the embryo at the end. A highly overrated movie.

Summary: A VERY BORING MOVIE FROM START TO FINISH.
Review: I found 2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY totally boring and a complete waste of time I even fell asleep during the movie. The whole storyline is completly dull I won't give it away just watch and see what I mean. My advice I'm sorry to say is to skip it.

Summary: An excellent DVD
Review: "2001: A Space Odyssey" looks and sounds fantastic on this DVD. However, if you don't have the proper connections, you may think the DVD is of a poor quality. You need a good TV, like a Sony Trinitron, and an S-video cable connection, which gives you the best picture quality. Beware of those who claim that this DVD is not worth the money!

As for the movie itself, it is an awesome experience. Watch it and let your mind ponder the possibilities of space travel, evolution, and contact with alien intelligence. It's a science fiction movie that allows your brain to do most of the work, which is pretty rare.

Summary: Quick Clip: Classic film...incredibly poor rendering on dvd.
Review: "2001" is one of those relatively rare movies that are so memorable for many movie-goers, that they are able to vividly recall the occasion of their first viewing. Unfortunately, MGM's recent release of the DVD version of this film serves only to make one long for another actual theatrical experience (in Cinerama?), rather than the visually distorted and audibly unsatisfying rendering of the disc. Although the movie is still spectacular and amazingly prophetic in its vision of our "future" in space (and the included "short subject" of author Clark's comments is enlightening), I recommend that fans rent, rather than purchase, this offering on DVD.

Summary: Excellent look into the future for its time... a must own!
Review: Excellent look into the future for its time... a must own! The effects and intence look at what can happen with technology both good and bad are eye openers.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Superbly intelligent sci-fi flick.
Review: One of the finest, well-written early science fiction movies. It will challenge your thinking to the point where you may have to read the book to understand what you've seen in the movie.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: 5 stars aren't enough stars...
Review: When a science-fiction film can be considered among the greatest of all films...well, that's an accomplishment. 2001's built-in eternal concept never dates itself; contrarily, the movie probably continues to serve as inspiration to true artists in all kinds of genres. If you haven't seen it, you really ought to get out more often.
