Summary: An early example of modern graphics simulation in a film
Review: I saw this when I was vacationing in Hawaii--a very good vacation movie. Very thin story line. I remember the "waterworm": that long, snaky blob of water that wandered through the rooms and made a face at you. The face was your own! Fun.

Summary: I thought this movie was truly a classic
Review: Wow. It's very rarely that a movie this good comes along. I've only seen the normal VHS edition...yet I can't imagine how the special edition - or anything, for that matter - could make this movie better. A rich plot, a sense of awe, a spirit of adventure... Every component of a true classic is evident in this movie. If this movie doesn't go down as a classic, shame on us all :o)

Summary: A kind of ripoff as you don't get the full 4 hour version!
Review: For people who can get the full version on laser disk. It's really worth while! the VHS tape is a badly edited version of the full 4 hour fantastic film! IF you taped the TV version, the TV version is an even bigger ripoff!

Summary: The best movie ever
Review: I think this is the best movie iv'ever seen.I really mean that.This film has everything,good actors,good character development,incredible special effects andreally good plot.The underwater scenes are really well done and it has powerful drama in it.The actors are impressive(Ed Harris and Michael Biehn are two of my favorite actors) and the effects still aren't oldfashioned. Truly a movie spectacle and should be in the top 10 list of the best sci-fi movies ever.

Summary: Great special effects, makes a good science lesson, too.
Review: I loved this movie when it originally came out in the theaters. Ed Harris has always been one of my favorite actors. Wonderful special effects; guess my favorite is the sea water "tube."I use this movie in my 8th grade science class at the end of our study about oceans. The students have to watch it and classify which things they see are actual science and which are science fiction. We talk about Jules Verne and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

Summary: A well crafted, but flawed science fiction classic
Review: Cameron had to cut an additional twenty minutes from the finished film due to his "final cut" contract with Fox. The result made a film that had interesting characters and moral complexity considerably weaker and less interesting. With the footage added to the VHS edition (it is similiar to the laserdisc edition issued a couple of years back), the film actually becomes a richer, more consistent and rewarding experience. The additonal footage adds clarity to the plot and also makes the characters more interesting. The plot becomes a little predictable and run of the mill by the end, but it doesn't make this flawed classic any less compelling...just a little disappointing in the end. Although Cameron tends to create films that run on a little too long, usually its justified by the action and additional shadings added to the characters. Although shot on Super 70 (one of the first films to use this format to its advantage)so that the cropped version doesn't suffer as much from the grain problems of most video transfers, the wide screen version adds to the epic elements that make this such a watchable film. Highly recommended.

Summary: Read the book as well
Review: The movie is great but if you can find it get a copy of Orson Scott Card's book. Not just a novelization of the film but a novel in it's own right. It fleshes out the characters and gives the aliens point of view. The ending in the extended version of the film came off a bit preachy but it works fine in the book.

Summary: How can this be called "The Abyss"!!!!
Review: I watched this film on VHS recently after trying to get it on DVD but failing. I could not believe that the film I was watching was the same film I saw at the Cinema in 1994. The plot has changed drastically. The version I saw at at the Movies had tidal waves building over all the world's major capitals followed by a warning from Aliens who cohabit the earth (but live at the bottom of the sea) that if we (Humans) do not stop our Nuclear madness (which could potentially destroy the peaceful aliens as well) they will destroy us first using the power of the ocean. This part of the plot which gave the whole film meaning was entirely axed by dumb studio financiers, presumably in the pursuit of a perfect 2hr film for general consumption. They failed! The Abyss in it's original form is a great watch with good music and this is entirely absent from the current release on VHS and Laserdisc only. Come on Fox, release the 'Directors Cut' on DVD!
