Summary: Excellent - In my top 5
Review: This is one of those movies that I can watch again and again, and it's also one of the very few that I've watched all the way through with both commentaries.
PB sits between Alien (with all the suspense) and Aliens (with all the action) including graphics and audio that are second to none. I recommend it to anyone with an interest in good Sci-Fi, action and even horror (though it's unfair to label it purely in that group).
Buy the movie, turn the volume up high, the lights down low and enjoy! Oh, and see if you can guess who survives...

Summary: Pitch Black
Review: I liked the graphics and the special effects. There is a mystery, few things are vague in the story, I would rather see some famous stars, but overall the acting is good.

Summary: Good sci-fi, but not great
Review: "Pitch Black" is a good science fiction movie, but it's not great. Greatness requires an originality that this movie just doesn't have, for the most part.

The special effects were first rate, especially the heat vision from Riddick's point of view. The space scenes were also very well done.

Riddick is an interesting character, but they went too far with his redemption at the end of the film. Holding hands with the girl? The guy's supposed to be a stone killer, so it just doesn't fly.

"Pitch Black" tries very hard to be "Aliens," but it doesn't measure up. The raptors are suitably nasty. I especially liked holding off on seeing them until almost halfway through the movie. It racheted up the intesity level. But they still lack the intelligence and/or cunning of most other memorable alien baddies, like the Predator or the Aliens.

There are too many holes for "Pitch Black" to make the jump from "good" to "great." Of course, I could just be peeved that they killed off "Farscape" babe Claudia Black so early.

This is an enjoyable movie, in and of itself. But it's not great, and don't compare it to any great movies, or it'll come out looking worse.

Summary: Great alien movie.
Review: ....I was told that all the "Alien" fans should have this movie.
As I`ve read bad and good things on "Pitch Black" I hesitated for while to buy it or not.AND.........I bought it!
If you are not an english native speaker(I am not!) you must watch it at least 3 times to undestand the plot.
The music fits SO WELL to the movie.Strange and captivating.
I loved it.I have the same feeling when I listen the music of..."Alien".
I can`t understand why some persons found it awful.I think they were certainly sleeping during.
There are also some who mentioned ,it is stupid that THE eclipse occurs JUST after they crashed on the planet.
Of course.........
We are always stucked on a traffic jam just when we are the most in a hurry so........aren`t we?
This movie is realy good.Buy it now.

Summary: Great sci-fi
Review: The plot for Pitch Black is pretty standard. I mean, when travelling in space, one can only be invaded, destroyed, trapped or, in this case, crashed. So they crash. What happens from then on is a modern look at what the classics tried to capture. Namely, the feeling of "If things weren't bad enough!" One thing I appreciate about this movie is that they resist the temptation to reduce the castaways (and those rooting for them) to a point of absolute hopelessness. Instead, much more masterfully, the story leaves the characters lunging desperately forward throughout most of the adventure.

The acting is pretty standard, the special effects are great (although that's almost par for the course, these days), and the dialogue is decently entertaining.

What makes this movie jump a couple of points for me is Vin Diesel, and the just awesome delivery of his lines. There is something impressively intense about his performance, and even as I think on it, I can't put it into words. Electrifying, if you will.

The direction is good, and throughout the movie we get a lot of good looks at people's expressions, which helps place me into a "I'm there" feel. Great directing helps this movie climb ahead of it's destination, too.

The critters... well, someone said you don't get a good look at them. Not true. But there are lots of glimpses prior to that, and the feeling one gets is to turn on all the lights and just... make sure... that the noise you heard was the plumbing. A GREAT "jumper/action" flick. If you liked Aliens, Lethal Weapons and/or Pulp Fiction, this one has something for you.

Summary: Raw Sci-Fi Adventure
Review: At last a Sci-Fi Movie that goes back to the basics, bringing us real life terror, not seen in Horror /Sci-Fi movies since the first two Alien Movies and Jaws.
Pitch Black brings a mixture of story telling with the right amount of special effects to make the plot believeable in an unbelieveable way. Vin Diesel brings an X-factor to this movie, along with excellent performances by the rest of the cast.
A movie that says you don't need a Tom Cruise or Harrsion Ford to make a great movie, get an excellent plot back it up with people you can actually act, shoot the movie in Australia, and you have what I would rate as one of the Best Sci-Fi Movies Ever.

Summary: NOTHING ORIGINAL BUT STILL STANDS ON IT'S OWN
Review: Essentially a combination of the Alien and Jurassic Park movies, Pitch Black still has an identity of it's own, especially the very powerful visiual effects of the planet on which the film takes place. The plot is a passenger space ship crash lands on a planet full of hostile and very powerful flying predators whose only apparent weakness is that they have a vampires reaction to light. The passengers are a mixed lot to say the least, but they all band together for the sake of survival and do so primarily under the leadership of the ships last surviving crew member and a convict being escorted back to prison by a cracker bounty hunter. Just speaking for myself, I would have truly loved this movie if it hadn't degenerated into still yet another ethnic empowerment message while implanting as it does the stereo-types of the politically correct lobby. Political correctness as a social theory outlived it's shelf-life a long time ago and as a theatrical vehicle it's little more than a tiresome cliche with no basis in reality.

Summary: Coulda been a contender
Review: Very good film, but it just needed a little extra kick to place it in the excellent category. Still, it's definitely worth watching if you're into horror/science-fiction. Surprisingly good characters (with Vin Diesel stealing the show), and pretty gruesome monsters. And since you never really see these flying razors in any great detail, much is left to your imagination. And that makes it much, much worse than if you got to see them up close and personal.

Summary: leaves room for error
Review: Since I don't know how to start this review, I guess I'll start with the plot. When a space ship carrying 40 civilians (including a convict) crashes on a planet that's very hot and has three suns, the survivors of the crash have to find a way to survive without food or water. But then they encounter strange creatures that have a hungry appetite for flesh and only come out at night. And then there is an eclipse

Vin Disel stars in the suspense/horror/science fiction blockbuster (in my book, anyway) along with Radah Mitchell and Keith David.

First, the good things: The special effects are great as well as the acting. The movie isn't exactly scary but it's very entertaining. There are some good one-liners, and the ending is great.

Bad things: It takes a while to get in to the meat of the movie. Although it starts with a huge crash, the movie doesn't pick up the pace until more than an hour in to the film. (and the film in 1 hr. and 48 minutes long) Intead, the first half is about character development and the second half picks up on the creatures.

DVD: I expected more special features. The 4 minute featurette isn't very good, but the commentary with the director, Vin Disel, and Cole Hauser is the meat of the special features. The other commentary is OK. The 3 minutes of restored footage add to the 1st half of the movie (character development) and the production notes are an intersting but quick read.

All in all: Good movie but was a little slow on pacing. I recommend you rent it before buying it.

1999; 112 minutes; Contains strong language, some scenes with intense violence, sensuality, and drug use.
