Rating: Summary: Who's Vin Diesel?? Review: That was my question the first time I saw "Pitch Black". I thought the movie itself was okay...but then I watched it again months later, and it grew on me. The special effects (namely, the "Night Freaks") were a welcome change from the faltering monsters of the Alien Saga, which have seriously lost their edge of the first two installments. The portrait of our human condition was interesting to see, too, as people from different walks of life are thrown into a strange situation and show their true colors (kind of like "Survivor", but better).Yet it is Mr. Diesel's portrayal of Riddick that really made the movie. Sharp, witty, lethal, and (for the ladies), very pleasant eye-candy...yet still human despite being treated and regarded as something less. Riddick is one of the classic anti-heroes, someone you shouldn't cheer for, but you find yourself doing it anyway. On the star scale, I give this movie a 4; it's not the absolute worst, and it's not the absolute best (what is?)...but it's damn good all the same.
Rating: Summary: A different type of movie Review: Pitch Black is a sci-fi/horror movie that keeps you at the edge of your seat. But something about this movie is, if you don't really have any desire to see it, most likely you'll find this a boring movie. It's best to have some idea that their on a strange planet with creatures on that come out in the dark, and with an eclips someing, its going to make things more difficult to get the cells to the escape ship and get off the planet. I found this movie very interesting with wonderful acting. The lighting effects are done very well with added mystery to it. The imagination in this movie was also well done, like the creature designs. I own the DVD unrated version, and it is 10 times better then the VHS. Those of you who are looking for an interesting movie with more of a different setting to it, then I would say this is a movie you may like.
Rating: Summary: Another sci-fi/horror should be on your list Review: Another awesome movie. I feel no need to express myself again, so go check out Event Horizon, and read my review there. If you're too lazy to do that, then take my advice. Just see it. Don't question, just go see the movie.
Rating: Summary: Just pitchy Review: Pith Black surpassed all hopes I had for the movie going into it. I expected crap for acting and marginal special effects with a cliched loaded plot. Now, there were a few cliches, but I could look past them. Aliens eating people that run around in the dark saying stupid things isn't exactly what you call "fresh". But, none-the-less, Pitch Black was a good movie. Vin Diesel was obviously the most talented actor, and he pretty much carried the load. This wasn't really an all-star cast, but the unknowns did well enough. The special effects, lighting, and cinemotagraphy were just fantastic. Some of the best that I have seen for a while. Pitch Black is a greatly underrated film and shouldn't be blown off for lack of imagination. Make sure you aren't in a Dark room while watching. 4 Stars
Rating: Summary: PITCH BLACK Review: TO ME THIS WAS A WAST OF MONEY . IT IS THE MOST BOREING FILM I HAVE SEEN IN YEARS
Rating: Summary: This one S.U.C.K.S. Review: I lost track of the movie when they crashed on the planet. Stopped watching after this, because of one main thing: Extremely bad acting. I don't think I have seen worse acting in a movie. So I couldn't bare to watch it any longer, because I felt I was in the middle of a movie where they actually paid for everything except for the actors. I know this review isn't as throughout as all the other ones here, but there is no more to say about this movie. I recommend this movie to nobody, it just is pure garbage, and can only be unmatched in a garbage pile. Why any people would achieve at giving this movie 5 stars, is beyond my world, in what I call movie quality. Even the somewhat interesting extras on what makes this the DVD version, doesn't help this movie at all. Nope. Please remember to recycle.-
Rating: Summary: Great Movie - Good Effects - Fair Plot Review: The movie was great, the effects were cool. The concept/plot, however seemed like a take-of from the Alien legacy. I hate movies that rip off the concepts of others. I recieved this movie as a gift last year. I liked the movie though. Vin Diesel's performance was top-notch.
Rating: Summary: Hardly inspired Review: Oh dear, what can I say about this. If you want completely derivative and contrived plots coupled with predictable script and story, then this is the film for you. Imagine the scene - a ship crashes on a planet, which is dark only once in 22 years. Guess when they crash, yup - the day before it all gets dark. Also - there are nasty aliens which are all predators, and apparently no other life (so what do the predators live on before the tasty humans turn up). The aliens only come out to play in the dark, by the way. To top it all off, once it goes dark, the humans have a psychotic criminal, who just happens to be getting transported on their ship. And guess what - he can see in the dark. Now wasn't that lucky. Predictable, poorly acted and the script gave me the impression that the 'actors' were making it up as they went along at times. A few special effects does not a sci-fi movie make. I wish someone would tell the film-makers.
Rating: Summary: A Overall Good Sci-Fi/Horror Flick Review: Pitch Black is a really good Sci-Fi/Horror movie. The cast is ok, but Vin Diesel is the best actor in this movie. But the scting doesnt matter when you have a good script. The reason I only gave it three stars is because of the impact. The film is setup perfectly for a sure classic, but when the main storyline comes into focus, the scares arent really scares, and that changes the impact of the movie because of it. The film does get boring, and you do wish for the ending to come, because of the lack of substance. Another thing that drops my rating is the fact that the police officer and the girl die. They set it up for a great flick if they didnt kill out the two characters who add "substance" to the script. And really the main conflict. But they ...that up as well The movie is about a group of people who land on an unknown planet. But after a while, the sun goes out, and the monsters come out of hiding. (Are they monsters? Who knows). But the flick has Vin Diesel, who I thought fit his role perfectly. But it does lack quite a few parts. Maybe if the writer didnt get in such a rush to get this film made, maybe, just maybe we might have had a classic that would stick with us for years. But its still worth viewing. DVD Special Features Include: • Region 1 encoding (US and Canada only) • Color, Closed-captioned, DTS Surround Sound, Widescreen, Dolby • Commentary by director David Twohy and actors Vin Diesel and Cole Hauser • Commentary by director David Twohy, producer Tom Engelman, and visual effects supervisor Peter Chiang • Production notes • Theatrical trailer(s) • Unrated director's cut features 3 minutes of additional footage • Making-of featurette (4.5 min.) • Raveworld Pitch Black event • Widescreen anamorphic format (2:35:1)
Rating: Summary: Woo hoo...Vin Diesel Review: I just had to get that out of my system. This man is just too cute. That said, I have to tell you that "Pitch Black" is a welcome surprise. In a sea of mindless rehashes of classic SF vehicles, it's got some heft. And all gushing about Diesel aside, I have to say that he's a big part of why this film works. He and Radha Mitchell carry a good deal of the film's weight with something more than just simple competence. The story itself is one we've seen dozens of times: a group of mismatched and often difficult characters are thrown together in a hostile environment, and try to keep themselves and each other alive. Instead of a single alien/predator/monster, PB gives us flocks of them, all pretty scary. And instead of a quirky-but-basically-good lead, we have Riddick who is something of a monster himself. There are plot holes in this film big enough to pilot a drop ship through, but ignore that and concentrate on the plot twists, the fairly deft characterization and the look of the thing. It has style, and it's a lot of fun if you'll just let it play out. Absolutely worth your time if you're a fan of the genre. And if you're not, if you just want a little eye candy, Diesel and Mitchell are both excellent choices.
