Review: This disc is not Anamorphic widescreen and it is missing DD 5.1 sound, it has only French 2 channel and English two channel sound.This disc , not the Movie is a major disappointment.
I thought they were finally releasing this movie in an Anamorphic widescreen format.

Summary: Text-only commentary is as good as any audio.
Review: There are some who are less impressed with the text-only commentary on this loaded DVD. I too, was nonplussed before I watched it. I like audio commentaries! They offer personal insights and details about movies we love, at least enough to spend 30 bucks on it. The text commentary here is not just a bare-bones dissection of special effects, like, say, the audio com from Star Wars Ep. 1. What a dissappointment.
Anyway, there are plenty of details about the actors, fluid breathing experiments, famous submarine disasters and even some karaoke(long version only)! Very fun. I was hoping for an audio with James Cameron (still am, for any of his movies) but this was just as satisfying.
Go get it! Have a bud light (wink).

Review: When a U.S. Submarine crashs under the deep sea in the atlantic ocean. When undersea oil drillers has been ask with the help of Navy Seals to see if there`s any survivors of the U.S. Submaire, while the crew invesgate but there`s something deep into the Abyss has been waiting for them. Written and Directed by James Cameron (The Terminator, True Lies, Titanic) has made his best film ever. Great visual effects by Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) and Dream Quest Images using Computer Generated Imagery (CGI), which they are Superb (Oscar Winner for Visual Effects). Oscar Nominated for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography and Best Sound Effects. This film is more touching, more emotional than Titanic (1997) did. DVD`s has an fine non-anamorphic Widescreen (2.35:1) transfer and an Strong Digitally Remastered Soundtrack in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound (Also included in the original:Dolby Stereo 2.0 Surround Sound). The first Disc is the film with 2 Alternate Version of the film, both in Widescreen and Dolby Digital Soundtracks with Subtitle Commentary by the film crew. Disc Two is packed with:A Documentary, Behind the Scenes featurette, Cast & Crew Information and more. One of the Best Science-Fiction films ever made. Super 35. Grade:A.

Summary: Could do better
Review: Nice movie, great sound effects it was one of the first movies to succesfully use Dobly Digital. Sadly enough this NOT "the directors cut", and is missing some crucial parts of the movie. Because of this the movie is kinda boring.
If you want to buy this movie, then skip this one and go straight to the directors cut. It also include's a nice documentary about movie which gives an nice inside view of the history of modern movie making.

Summary: Never thought I'd say it, but...
Review: I like the VHS version better than the DVD! The extra 27 minutes that were restored certainly add coherence to the complicated goings-on, and these extra minutes are edited into the VHS version much better than the DVD, which made the insertion of these out-takes more than obvious. Without these extra minutes, the film is mediocre at best. I was especially impressed with the tidal wave sequences, which were stunning (and missing from the theatrical release). Characters are more interesting, and the sound and visuals are all great. I'd be interested to hear others' opinions regarding this DVD vs VHS. I simply thought the DVD was choppy & poorly edited.

Summary: What the Theatrical Release Should Have Been
Review: Like many others, when I saw the original theatrical cut of the film, it left me feeling unfulfilled. Cameron had to cut an entire subplout out to get the length of the movie down - he has a thing for making his movies long. Unfortunately, there was no subplot that could be easily removed without compromising the intregity of the movie. The theatrical release should only be watched to show someone what is taken away from the movie by removing the subplot - and never when you really want to watch the movie for the movie's sake. This DVD, with the special edition full-length cut, gives the movie the opportuntity to shine in all of it's glory. The ending which felt like a sudden "left-turn" at the end, coming out of nowhere, now fits in very nicely, truly resolving and connecting everything together. The film itself now can truly work on all the levels, dealing with special effects that were groundbreaking at the time, a complex story with believable characters (I still can't see Ed Harris without thinking of 'Bud'), and a range of emotions brought out in various scenes. The additional disc in this 2-disc set offers a number of definately worthwhile extras. The 30-minute "Making of" feature is a must-watch for everyone who likes this movie - I had no idea how difficult and exhausting filming this movie was, and you can't really understand that it's "the most difficult shoot ever" without seeing what they went through.

Review: Here's what you do. On disk two, click on trailers. There's three for the Abyss, where you click on the posters to get the trailers. Well, strain your eyes. Can you see a poster for True Lies under the Abyss posters? Or Aliens? Or Strange Days? Just fool around with the right-left up-down buttons on your remote and walla! Three trailers. Also, go to the main menu (on side two) and click audio. It will zoom up on two cameras, and a spiders on top of one. Press up, and another Aliens trailer! Cool. Summary: My favorit movie of all Time
Review: The first time I watched this movie, I had no Idea what I was going to see. It just happend to be the only movie in the theater that I hadn't seen. I was blown away! On the edge of my seat for three hours that seemed like only one. A Trident missle submarine is sunk is deep water by an unknown craft. A hurricane is on the surface so rescue teams cannot reach it. There is an experimental underwater drilling rig within reach. a navy seal team is sent down to take charge, but the drilling team does not like to take orders. the Sub sits on the edge of an abyss that goes 3 miles strait down. While searching the sub for survivors, another craft is spotted. The navy guys go crazy because they think it must be the Russians. But the Drilling crew disagree. Needless to say, it is not the Russians. I don't want to give away the ending, but this movies just gets more and more intense all the way though. I didn't really care for the added scenes in the Special Eddition. if you get this movie watch the movie version first.
