Summary: You've Not See The Abyss Until You've Seen This Cut!
Review: I've seen the theatical release many times, but until I watched the director's cut in surround sound, I've not experienced it. This version explains so much more and it makes you wonder could there be something else out there that does ultimately have our fate in its hand. If you allow your imagination to take you into the abyss, you will not forget the terror or the beauty of it. Although sometimes predictable, the cinematography is mesmerizing. If you love movies that can transport your imagination, this is one movie that you must see! I bet you'll never look at another hurricane or tidal wave the same.

Review: And about the ending. I think it's great! I like how the Aliens for once are portraited like this. I have seen many movies that have portraited the Aliens in much more hostile ways but not many (the only other coming to mind is Close Encounters of the third kind) have portraited them as pieceful. The movie wouldn't be as good as it is without the ending. What I have noticed about the ending is that people either love it or hate it. Not many think it's so-so. I'm one of those who completely loves it!

Review: James Cameron's charachter driven film The Abyss:Special Editon at nearly 3 hours makes this a hole new film experience.Strong performances by Ed Harris , Michel Beihn , Mary Eliz Mastriantonio this new version will explain much of what the theatrical version didn't.A band of oil riggers must aid in the salvage of a sumberine down with Navy Seals joining the expiditon.But Bud played by (Ed Harris)must tackle his ex wife as well as a nuclear slavage. In a sudden change of events the crew get caught in a giant hurricane and damages there complex.In a routine maintance check one of the crew members finds that they are not alone in the abyss they come in contact with a peacful alien race.But in the Special Editon we find that they don't have to be so peaceful but that they have no choice but to destroy us because we in turn are destroying ourselves in this incredible and inteligent special effects powerhouse of an epic. This is what science ficton is all about. The DVD is packed with special features giving you the option to veiw the 21/2 hour version or the 3 hour version.Trailers and giving you an inside glimpse at the making of this legendary film.If you have never seen this film you will not be dissapointed because after you see it you will not want to view it any other way.A true epic.

Summary: The Director's Cut is overated too - but the movie isn't bad
Review: Everybody gave me a lot of grief for my last review saying that I had not seen the Director's Cut. So I checked to see which copy I have at home. It IS the Director's Cut. The ending is better than the original, which was even worse. But I stand by my previous review - this ending is still not very good. For those who read the previous review, it is still accurate. The story is good; the acting is very good, the special effects are excellent, and most important convincing. However, the introduction and subsequent treatment of the aliens in the story is superficial and cursory. And yes, the ending is disappointing. A movie must be viewed as a whole - if any part of that whole is not as good as the rest it affects my judgement of the entire movie. Which in this case is too bad, because the rest of the movie is quite good. A movie is not better simply because it has a "Director's Cut" attached to it. In the case of Blade Runner, the director's cut is a night and day improvement. In the case of the Aliens' director's cut (also by Cameron), there is a sequence added before the Aliens destroy the terraforming colony. It was a mistake to reintroduce this footage. The movie is much creepier without it. The unknown always leaves a hollow feeling which is much scarier. So, if you loved the regular cut of this movie, you will love this one more. But if you have doubts . . . There are much better movies out there for your hard earned entertainment dollars.

Summary: Beautiful movie! two thumbs up!
Review: There's something curious about this film: everyone who I have asked about it reply to me that they haven't watch it, and since I'm not a spoiler I would never tell them the ending, because once they watch the whole film they would recognize the film's ending and remember that they have already watched it, what a problem!, you can't describe the film without spoiling it! Well, back to my review, I loved the movie's beautiful music, and the acting for me it's brilliant, the sentimental aspects moves you, the action keeps you on the edge of the seat, and I really loved the film's end. And it's finally on DVD! well hopefully it will also be released with Region 4 encoding, since 20th C Fox is begining to release DVDs on my country. Oh well, if you are one of those who claims of not watched it before, go see it now, and tell me if you recognized the film's ending.

Review: How can a woman that has drowned and been revived get up and walk around a short time later? No wonder the ausience sniggered at the cinema where I saw this movie. It has some big and impressive scenes and great music.What a pity the story wasn't properly thought out a bit more.The end is an anti-climax and makes no sense.OK.the aliens have gone to the surface and ships lay on their side.What now?If it goes back down then those ships will sink! James Cameron,leave the writing to the writers please.

Review: Finally! I'm sure many James Cameron fans can relate to my excitement that "The Abyss" - THE DIRECTOR'S CUT! - is FINALLY out on DVD! This is such a great film, and deserves it's rightful place on DVD. The sound is magnificent, the acting is Oscar-worthy from Ed Harris, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, and Michael Behn (?), and the special effects are so damn cool this film will blow you away after every veiwing. The director's cut is especially wonderful. If you love the original, wait until you see the 28 minutes of extra footage, the footage which makes "The Abyss: Special Edition Director's Cut" the very BEST movie ever made. END

Summary: DIRECTOR'S CUT! DIRECTORS CUT!
Review: In refrence to jake_speed's review. It is important to realize that you should not write a commentary on a movie's pitfalls when you haven't seen the director's cut. The way Cameron wanted you to see it. I love this movie. Ever since it came out I have been facinated by it. When the director's cut was released on LD in the summer of '93 I couldn't have been happier. The ending most people find a letdown is gone, replaced by a much more significant climax. If you haven't seen this movie yet, GET THE DIRECTOR'S CUT ON VHS, and you will never regret it.

Summary: Wait for the DVD, get the directors cut
Review: I saw the director's cut in LA on the big screen. Cost me $17.00 ($4 for the movie, $13(!) to park!) but it was well worth it. The extended version is the only version of this film, if you ask me. The original theatrical release is like a half-finished movie. Only with the additional footage does the ending make sense at all. With the addition of this added running time, The Abyss goes from being an OK movie to Cameron's second best after Aliens. I already have the laser version (but my player broke). Given the fact that at full price this DVD costs half of what it paid for that, this is a deal!

Summary: Definitely underrated
Review: I'd like to agree with some people below who said you have to see the director's cut to fully appreciate this movie. That tsunami cut-out scene adds so much meaning and impact, I cannot understand why they'd ever want to cut it out! When I saw the original, I was impressed, but the director's cut blew me away. The film is indeed quite long, and some scenes could've been edited out - that's the reason i didn't give it five stars. Everything about it is amazing. The cast, the FX, the message. It makes you question your existence and the world around you. It makes you think and feel the thoughts and emotions you didn't know you had. It makes you both ashamed and proud of the human race. And it makes you want to do more good in your life and not be such an egomaniac.
