Summary: Will Go Down as One of the Best Sci-Fi Films Ever
Review: Every now and then a film comes along with surprising wit and humor for its genre. THE FIFTH ELEMENT shouldn't work, based on the fact that it is so aggressively imaginative compared to other sci-fi films. But it is one of the most delightful films I've seen in a while. Milla Jovovich is to die for, particularly in the enchanting costume in which she debuts in this movie -- as remarkable a piece of cloth engineering as I've ever seen on a young woman -- and Milla looks fabulous. Her character, the sweet and somewhat naive Lillu, is irresistible, and I fell for her faster than Bruce Willis' taxi driver did. The plot is powered by a save-the-planet search for a missing "fifth element," which Gary Oldman's villain wants to acquire as badly as anyone else in the movie. But the genius of this story is injecting a big dose of warmth and humanity into this effects extravaganza, giving the film such appealing characters and such high humor that there's never a dull moment. Even a minor character like the electric blue opera-singing alien wins us over so quick that we care when she is wounded shortly after she's been introduced. Some think the "Ru Paul-like" talk show host steals the movie, others think the squealing he-she is an irritant. Frankly, I find "her" much easier to take than, say, Joe Pesci's character in the Lethal Weapon sequels. I guess it's a matter of personal taste. In any case, this movie fulfills its promise beautifully and is surprisingly engaging and entertaining given its wild art direction and sci-fi environment. It is surely going into the history books with films like BLADE RUNNER among the best cinematic sci-fi achievements.

Summary: Technical & Entertainment Value rate a Perfect 5 !
Review: First off, this dvd should be the reference standard to demonstrate the powers that be concerning the excellence in dvd picture and sound quality for this home video medium format!The colors are rich and daylight bright(you will be marvelling at LeeLoo's beautiful crystal blue eyes and bright burning orange hair)The images are crystal sharp and finely focused (and, yes I have seen this dvd played on several different makes and models of players and t.v.s; so, it's not just the hardware being used). The dialogue, surround sound effects, and music went beyond my expectations! Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich, and Gary Oldman are perfectly cast. The appearance of Chris Tucker is a memorable one.The gender bending/rock-star/d.j. celebrity character Ruby Rhod is a sheer tongue-in-cheek joke throwing it's innuendos at another well known "Purple"reigning musical artist in real life! What's not to love about this movie ?There are good guys, bad guys, state-of-the-art special f/x, excellent music, and eye catching(yet sometimes confusing) sets/sceneries.The story or plot may not be profound but the rest of the above mentioned carry it off very well indeed... P.S.--I highly recommend the soundtrack. The only error is that the chase scene,between Corben Dallas and the police,containing the salsa-ethnic sounding track sung in Arabic or Middle-Eastern vocals has been omitted !

Summary: Action, Humor and a Plot!
Review: It's got lots of action, big explosions, complex futuristic detail, Bruce Willis being Bruce Willis, humour that's actually funny, an out-of-this-world beautiful woman who's more than just eye candy, an terrific assortment of supporting characters, a bit of ancient mythology, quite a collection of bad guys, imminent destruction of the world, nifty aliens, a great score, and believe it or not, a plot; what more do you want? Well, actually, I really wanted somebody to kill the screeching Ruby Rhod. For a short while he was amusing. But eventually, I was hoping far more for the demise of Ruby Rhod than I was of the bad guys. Oh all right, he wasn't that bad, I suppose. Other than that, one thing it did lack was something that would really move, or affect, me emotionally. That wasn't a big problem, I enjoyed it, it's entertainment on a large scale, and not meant to have any deep meaning, as far as I'm aware. It's high-energy and it's fun and everybody looks like they're having a good time. If you like it, it's well worth owning on VHS or DVD, since it can bear repeated viewings.

Summary: Excellently-Awesomely-"way cool" movie
Review: This is, by far, one of my favoritest movies ever. The whole thing was just, phenomenal. The special effects, the action, the everything. And the plot was excellent. I dont think that many people realized it, but the best part of the movie was the set-up. A movie about the Wiccen beliefs. The beliefs in the power of the water, the fire, the earth, the wind, and the fifth element, spirit. All this with a futuristic twist. Fantastic. In conclusion, if you havent seen this movie, you probably should. Or at least think about seeing it. I have seen it many times. And let me tell you, its great.

Summary: Love It!
Review: I love this movie. Thought it was great in the theater and it is great on DVD. The story is killer and the action flows from the first minute to the last. Bruce Willis, Milla Jojovich and Gary Oldman all give great performances and Chris Tucker steals the show. The special effects have an almost comic book feel to them, and I think they were really cool. The only disappointment with this DVD is that the special features are lacking. Other than that I would highly recommend this as an excellent addition to your DVD collection.

Summary: An Excellent No-Brainer
Review: What some people don't get is that this movie is not supossed to be groundbreaking or revolutionary, it's not supposed to be a top contender for a Best Picture Oscar, in fact, the only reason this movie was made was to entertain people! And that my friends it does, no matter how many times I see it, I always find something new (It could have something to do with the fact that Luc Besson was given $90 million dollars to make the movie; leaving room for tremendous special effects). The special effects are a mixed bag actually. Some are excellent (Fhloston Paradise, New York shots, Space sequences, and the entire cinematography and production design), while others come up as incredibly cheesy (the Mangalores, explosions in space, and some other effects). But, the film does have flaws, for example, the entire "Ruby Rhod" subplot was not needed, and if the scenes leading up to it were rearranged, the film's cheese factor would drop heavily. Also, the movie does drag in a few spots (the Airport sequence, the conversation between Cornelius and Zorg, and some other little parts that were good and tremendously funny, but were not integral to the main storyline. Finally, we come to the most dissapointing part of the movie, the dialouge. Even though the script was fine for a sci-fi flick, some parts were so cliche and goofy (the ending conversation scene between the remaining characters in the temple, some dialouge in the middle of the film, and some lines in the beginning). But, the film overcomes these little nitpicks with it's good factors; starting off with the score. One word: WOW! This is the most kick-a** soundtrack in my collection. From soft to electronic, this movie has it all. My congraulations Mr. Serra, you have created a unique, yet excellent piece of music. This leads into our other good factor, the editing. I'll tell you right now, Luc Besson is the master at editing. Creating some of the best action sequences in recent memory (the Cab chase, Lello's escape from the NucleoLab, and the last half of the film). Not only are these sequences great, but the music is made to accompany in such a way, that only Mr. Besson could have done. In fact, this film has been one my greatest, yet very different, expierences I have ever had with a film, and I'll tell you something, this film is like no other before (or after for that matter!), and it's certainly not something Hollywood would come up with! Although the DVD is good, technically, there are no extras (not even the excellent trailers for the film (which I highly recommend you check out!), production notes, making "of" documentary, etc... Maybe a Special Edition would be made in the future (Hey, maybe a sequel) who knows...

Summary: Bruce Willis and Science Fiction do not mix.
Review: They really don;t. This was basically DIE HARD set in the future, with all explosions, endless action, and no plot. In the same class as Star Wars and Star Trek, I think NOT.

Summary: DVD worth the widescreen...
Review: I prefer widescreen. It is a favorite of mine, and the main reason I prefer DVDs is that they can have a widescreen version. This movie is SO MUCH BETTER on widescreen, with the enhanced angles and, of course, the DVD resolution, that I heartily suggest it over the VHS version. Why this movie, though? Really cool story line, and some good cheesy moments. You have to love the radio-star!

Summary: Bessons Best?
Review: Luc Bessons' other movies - including The Messenger and Leon - have typically been character studies. In particular we have seen characters studying themselves, on a journey either to discovery and/or destruction. The Fifth Element does not do this. In fact, the leads in this movie are almost determinedly 2-dimensional cartoon characters whose roles exist merely to serve the story, which in itself is rather good. The story at it's simplest is a battle between ultimate Good and ultimate Evil. The ultimate good is represented by the metallic liferaft shaped creatures called the Mondoshawan while the ultimate Evil is represented by a big ball of fire in the sky known only as "Pure Evil". The only hope for the Mondoshawan, the beautiful all powerful weapon "The Fifth Element", is a beautiful young girl - Leeloo(Jojowich) - who gets lost in New York and is subsequently found by cabbie Korben(Willis). Finding Leeloo leads Korben and the rest of the cast through the usual trials and tribulations that lead us to the climatic finale of this film. It would fill me with joy to say that Bruce Willis shines in this movie, but his rather bland portrayal of Korben demotes hims to merely providing the thematic string that holds the characters and scenarios together in the storyline. If this movie had an MVP it would be awarded to Gary Oldman(True Romance, Leon) whose portrayal as the slimiest villain: Zorg brings back certain memories of his character Drexl in True Romance. Contending for a strong second would be Milla Jojovich who thrives under the direction of Besson and plays the extremely frightened Leeloo with the same gusto given to Jeanne D'Arc(The Messenger). No discussion of this movie would be complete without mentioning Chris Tucker(Lethal Weapon 4) who gives us a great show as the wonderfully irritating Ruby Rhod and adds a unique diversion during some of the somewhat blase action sequences. Visually, it is hard not to compare the settings with those found in Blade Runner, Total Recall, and The Running Man. The colorful, overly commercial and beautiful world that towers above the ground - which is now covered in mile thick smog - is nothing new, but still a joy to watch. Luc Bessons career has tangentially diverted away from his usual style here. This is an bold and somewhat welcome diversion from a director who may just have been starting to back himself into the "arthouse" corner.

Summary: Something one can watch, again and again!
Review: This is a very fun movie to watch. The sound trac and special effects are superb. If you're expecting a serious Sci-Fi thriller, then this isn't the movie for you. The movie has a lot of humor, mixed in with Sci-Fi Fantasy elements of the future. If you have any sense of humor at all, then you'll be smiling and laughing through many parts of the movie. This movie is definately a "DVD" movie. Worth purchasing on DVD. I've enjoyed watching this movie many times and I always find new andlittle things I've missed in the past. Gary Oldman does a great performance, and Chris Tucker is allowed to let loose! The plot is not thick or complicated, so you won't find any serious themes in this movie, until the end. Enjoy
