Review: This was a very good movie about an ex-soldier (Bruce Willis) who becomes a cab driver and ends up meeting a perfect being (Milla Jovovich). He ends up having to save the world from a giant evil force advancing towards earth who is using a henchman (Gary Oldman) to destroy the protection against him. It takes place far in the future. Has a interesting look to the future. Luc Besson did a good job with it. I showed the movie to a friend of mine who I didn't think they would like it but it ended up being one of their favorites! I recomend this movie. -Mike

Summary: A Cartoon Come to Life
Review: THE FIFTH ELEMENT is a dazziling spectacle of science fiction. Fixed with great special effects, odd caracters, and all around funny humor, THE FIFTH ELEMENT is a movie I can truly watch again and again. Its just fun!A Brooklyn taxi driver of the 23rd century gets caught up in a cosmic event that could destroy the world. Bruce Willis, Gary Oldman, Milla Johovich, and Chris Tucker make excellent characters in this truly amazing film. What is the coolest part is the hero and the villian never meet!

Summary: my thoughts about the plot
Review: this story line has been called cartoonish and silly in many negative reviews. it was made to be cartoonish, hense the hyper color aspect of the film. the story line is comic like because many of the ideas are borrowed from comic books. this story is more than just a brilliant satire on US consumer/ need for speed culture. It is also a move about perspective, and interconnection. during every major scene (example: exploding luxury ship) we are shown the villian's actions and the protaganist's to create connections between them and their enviornments. All the actions Gary Oldman makes end up directly affecting our main characters.In this way the story line is very strait forward, every action has very obvious (thanks to the direction) results.The "cheesy" earth wind fire water + love ending is used because it calls attention to Goddess spirituality (esp. in US) today. both wiccan and other goddess images make these five things sacred. Examples include Starhawk's novels The Fifth Sacred Thing and The Spiral Dancers. Strong enviornmental and feminist themes are always present in films by Luc Basson; La Femme Nikita, the Big Blue, and more. The message of this film may not come in the moralistic manner people are fond of in Star Trek, or in the ridged dualistic thinking of Star Wars but is still just as valid. Don't get me wrong, I love star Trek and like Star Wars but trying to compare them with the Fifth Element is like comparing apples and oranges. The reason I give the DvD 4 stars is because I'd like more DvD goodies. The movie itself gets a five.

Summary: Beyond bad
Review: Beware of favorable reviews. If you have not seen The Fifth Element yet, do not, under any circumstances, attempt to reason out what's going on. In general, science fiction tales play fast and loose with reality, but here, it's so flagrant that even a moment's intelligent consideration of what's on the screen will shatter any hope of suspending disbelief. Beautiful Milla Jovovich is the 5th element "supreme being" the world needs to survive. This is about the only thing I found believable in this whole movie. See there's this big ball of evil traveling toward Earth and......you get the idea. The story is such a cut-rate kid's sci-fi fairy tale that at one point Evil actually calls Gary Oldman on the phone (and no, it isn't meant to be funny). Chris Tucker plays an even more annoying version of RuPaul meets Dennis Rodman. This has got to be one of the most grating character I have ever seen (though not as bad as Jar Jar). This film had the budget, the art direction, the special effects, and the cast to make a much better film. One has the feeling that [director] Besson is really talking down to his audiences and laughing up his sleeve.

Review: This is a great entertaining movie with great effects, great sounds, and excellent visual clarity! I've seen this about 5 times on DVD and will watch it over and over again in the coming months! Humor mixed with action and drama!

Summary: One of my favorite DVDs!
Review: Imagine watching Fifth Element as "real life" but reflected thru a mirror. The image is so sharp you'll feel the urge to push your hand thru the screen. Willis and Jovovich are a sexy pair so the urge to touch is awfully tempting! Equally sexy are the unsurpassed special effects that beat the you-know-what out of Star Wars: Episode I. In this medium (DVD) the movie becomes much better than VHS because everything is so vivid, sharp and colorful. Even Chris Tucker is more funny than annoying on DVD. The dim-witted alien creatures are a delight! As far as auditory, very few DVDs measure up to this. From sound fx to opra music you'll want to turn it up! I believe the Fifth Element is the perfect DVD to show off your DVD equipment or perhaps to let it loop in your electronics store. It's the one I'd use to sell units (if I had a store, that is). My version had no extras like trailers and such. I did find the alternate Spanish soundtrack interesting. I paid ... for this from ................... club (last one I have to buy, I figured what the heck). Easily worth ... less from ........... You will not be disappointed!!

Summary: Can't find a bad Bruce Willis movie.
Review: I have put off watching this movie, because I heard it was stupid. Four years later, after it was released, I finally rented it. I would say, it was one of Bruce Willis' finest performances. This movie is as good as Armagedon. I'm glad I gave this movie a chance, if I wouldn't have watched it, I would have missed out. I now own it.

Summary: Sci-Fi Potato Chips, But Fun to Digest
Review: The "Fifth Element" is sort of like the sci-fi equivalent of a bag of potato chips. You start digesting the satirical plot and imagery, consume all there is, but then later feel less "full" than you thought you were. Is that bad? Not really. This is a tremendously tasy bag of visual potato chips! Interestingly, it is a French director (Besson), making a film for American mass consumption, who accomplishes a relentlessly fast-paced parody of that very culture of mass-consumption. For this reason alone, "The Fifth Element" will probably retain historical interest. The scenes, presented in rapid-fire sequence, skewer everything from fast-food joints (the police at the futuristic "McDonald's" is a stitch!), to credit cards, to TV talk show hosts. So don't approach this movie with an aim to pick it apart intellecutally. Just go with the flow of the tongue in cheek references to American consumer culture, and enjoy. You may still feel hungry when it's all over, but you will have had a great time while it was rolling along. Not at all in the "Star Wars" niche, so comparisons are fruitless.

Summary: Think Outside the Box
Review: This is good science fiction at work here. It holds up after repeated viewings and even looks better each time. This film has plot, listen close, and good characters. Bruce Willis takes his Die Hard image into the future and the meld is very good. It's not your typical stuff but it works and that's what makes it a good film. Great score too!

Summary: If you want Star Wars, then watch Star Wars!!
Review: Why does every sci-fi film always end up being compared to Star Wars or Star Trek? Does anyone ever honestly admit that Star Trek has horrible acting and dumb plots, (especially Voyager)and stupid looking alien enemies that are merely humans with each a different style of forehead ridges? Isn't there anything more insightful to say about this (or any other) sci-fi film other than "Star Wars was better, man!" Look at it objectively. Take the film for what it has to offer, not how it stacks up versus Star Wars. So, what does this film has to offer? A very unique and truly entertaining experience. A fresh new take on sci-fi. Not over-run with techno-jargon, a human factor to the characters...and Bruce Willis. I read a few reviews stating the plot was hard to comprehend and and the 'bad guys' were fake looking. Well, if you just 'don't get' the plot, then admit to that first - It will make your opinion more valid. Fact is, the plot is very well organized, with quite a bit of comic relief typical of any Bruce Willis film. Gary Oldman, Ian Holm, and Milla Jovovich all deliver memorable performances. Special effects are, for lack of a better word, amazing. The DVD version truly captures the full essence of these scenes, and widescreen is the only way to watch! The soundtrack - incredible. A very unique mix of music styles, both in the film and as a stand-alone music CD, incorporating everything from opera to electronica. (The techno opera is wonderfully composed, and the action scene it plays through is in my opinion the highlight of the film) Of course, no film is without flaws, and this one is no exception. The biggest flaw is the character of Ruby Rhod. I don't know whether to blame Chris Tucker for the performance, or the script writers for making the character. (It is very annoying to listen to a thundering explosion in full digital sound only to have a girlish sqeal dubbed over it) The only other flaw (and its relatively minor) is the lack of special features on the DVD. Well, there you have it. I hope this will be helpful. If not, oh well... All in all, wonderfully acted, great effects and sound, and a unique and compelling vision of the future. A must for true sci-fi fans. If you want Star Wars, plug in Phantom Menace for the 257th time. If you want something new and greatly entertaining, look no further!
