Rating: Summary: One of the best! Review: The story is something like Matrix or like Fritz Leibers book You're all alone, but the way of filming looks more like City of the Lost Children. I can't really understand why the DVD includes comparsions with Fritz Langs Metropolis, there really aren't much to compare. It is a really good movie, almost entirelly filmed during the night (hence the name). Rufus Sewell makes a god hero, walking around in the ciry, not knowing who he is, looking both confused and scared at the same time. Kiefer Sutherland is wonderful to see as a psychiatrist that would make any patient loose sanity, just visiting him. Set in a gothic enviroment, even more so than Batman, the special effects are really never out of their place, like in so many other movies. If you are a science fiction-fan and liked Matrix, I don't think you should miss this. If you want movies with a more ordinary look and feel, perhaps you should skip it.
Rating: Summary: THe Matrix before the matrix Review: Me beinga huge fan of Akria and movies/japanamation (yes I say Japanamation cause when I started watching it there were 3 movies and it was called JAPANAMATION not this clicky anime' bs) this movie washmm how to put it....totally kickass.
Rating: Summary: Chilling, nightmarish, quasi-mystical, magnificent. Review: Top film this, one can't help having flashbacks of it. Gothic, cold, dark imagery along with a mindbending storyline.
Rating: Summary: . Review: This is a good example of some genuinely interesting ideas being played around with for two hours in a bad movie. Keifer Sutherland is so bad and over-the-top that I laughed all through his first scene. Sewell looks adequately haunted but other than that is utterly flat and unengaging as a character. Jennifer Connelly is primarily just a pretty face. The visuals and special effects are breathtaking at times, and silly and overdone at others (especially towards the end.) Essentially the only thing that kept me going with this film until the end were the ideas, premise, and the general atmosphere, which appealed to me. But everything else, the things that make a movie genuinely good, were terribly lacking, or just very poorly done. On the whole it comes off less as dark, evocative, and mind-bending, and more just "interesting but goofy." This has the ring of one of those movies where the director/writer thought up the idea in early highschool and is returning to it now, his nostalgia blinding him to all of the flaws and clusminess of the actual execution of his idea. (I'm not saying that's the actual case, but that's what I thought of.)
Rating: Summary: Americans - very lucky Review: I would like Americans, to know just how lucky they are. I bought the zone 4 version of Dark City here in Australia where the only extras on the disk were interviews and extra footage, and this happens all the time. I thought Dark City was a great movie and when you buy things and then realise you have bought an incredibly inferior version, well, really, it sucks! Anyway, you guys are really lucky to have such easy access to all the good stuff. Dark City is great, and I definetely recommend the zone 1 version.
Rating: Summary: One of the best films I've ever seen Review: This film will surprise you with its genius. This is simply one of the best films ever made. The more you watch it, the more you'll appreciate the detail put into every scene. Everything about this movie is great - the style, cinematography, acting, plot, script - everything. The DVD is especially good, with the special feature of Roger Ebert's commentary track. This alone is worth the price of the DVD!
Rating: Summary: Scary Review: This movie is to say the least absolutely mind boggling. A good story and the right touch of darkness makes this a favorite to all fans of science fiction.
Rating: Summary: An amazing movie Review: It is really difficult to do this movie justice in a written review because it is such an amazing piece of work. While watching it I was reminded of so many other classic movies as it borrows from the likes of Metropolis, Blade Runner, La Cite Des Enfants Perdus(City of Lost Children) and the classic film noir movies of the 40's and 50's. It is also the kind of movie which can be watched again and again and you will still find something new in it every time. Visually it is brilliant and very detailed and it is truly impressive how they can show a city submerged in eternal night without it becoming monotonous or too dark to make out the bits and pieces. The acting is also very good, with Kiefer Sutherland as my personal favourite in a cast full of very capable actors. Both Rufus Sewell and Jennifer Connelly are very acomplished actors and yet far from being overused in movies as many of the best actors are, and this helps to make the characters they play very believable. I particularly found Connellys laid-back, almost lazy, approach to suit the movies mood perfectly. William Hurt as Inspector Bumstead is definetly not far behind though, and does a wonderful job as the lonely accordion-playing detective who knows his life is missing something but can't put his finger on what it is. New Line has done a very good job with this dvd also, adding two commentary tracks, an intereactive game as well as many other features like a comparison with Metropolis and cast bios. I have just one objection to this movie and unfortunatly it is a rather annoying one. At the beginning of the movie there is a voice-over with Sutherland explaining a lot of stuff that would have been better left to be discovered by the viewer as the movie progressed. I really don't know why some directors/studios insist on insulting the viewers intelligence by spoon-feeding them stuff like this, but unfortunatly its something we've come to expect from Hollywood studios over the years. Nevertheless, this movie is an incredible journey through the heart, soul and mind of the Dark City and some of its inhabitants, and is in my opinion the best movie of 1998.
Rating: Summary: What garbage! Review: Could I please have that 2 hours of my life back? I am one of the world's biggest SCI-FI fans, and I thought this was utter (insert profanity of your choice here). Dark (as in impossible to see), unintelligible, and frustrating as hell.
Rating: Summary: it is as it should be Review: It is dark & confusing, it is as it should be. The influences are being overplayed upon in these reviews, it is very unlike The Matrix, even "the first half hour" where the birth seen occurs, that looks to be torn from the pages of an H.R.Gigger book of prints (I hope he was paid & credited for his work, or the marvels theft of it), D.C. relies little on Gigger's bio-mechanical stile. It has a Kafka feel in meny ways but is fantasy SciFi based, where Kafka has a more hard science fiction base, more like 1984 then um hell, I can't think of a counter part for the men in black in this analogy. As for Blade Runner I cannot say, saw it once, a wile ago. These people missed the oveayis exstream similarities to City of Lost Children (which I also will give 5 stars), so stop reading our thoughts, lot of them seem to not know of what they speak. So stop reading our opinyins, buy or rent this, the effects alone are worth the time & expense, & unlike The Matrix, the lead in this movie can act. Oh, cant spell & word check has not a clue, w/ meny words (like "meny"), sorry about a few spellings in their.
