Summary: excellent movie! 'nuff said!
Review: As one of the best sci-fi movies of the 90's, this movie film contains a nice balance of film noir and science fiction. Alex Proyas's vision mystifies and explores the dark elements of life with this film and The Crow, and can be classified as one of the great film makers, along with Luc Besson (The Professional, Fifth Element) and Ingmar Bergman (Seventh Seal).

Summary: Watch it twice before judging
Review: I was originally put off by the shallowness of the characters, but its intentional. The characters have a surreal quality that allows them to blend into the noir background without complaint from the viewer.

The first time I saw the movie, it put me to sleep. The second time it was on my top 20 list. It is worthy of deeper analysis.

Summary: Originality equal to the of the Matrix, this IS sci-fi!
Review: From the first sentence this movie drags you into its twisted dark dimension. This is truly one of the best sci-fi movies i have ever seen. The background has a familar, yet odd look to it. Take The Matrix, mix it up with The Crow, add a touch of an old Detective movie setting, throw in a few twisted characters from the Twilight Zone and add a pinch of twisted sci-fi, shake well, serve cold and you have Dark City. Buy it.

Summary: Bad Acting
Review: This film has some of the worst acting i've ever seen. The movie has a good story line but it;s hard to watch with this terrible acting. DONT BUY THIS, you will only watch it once. Hire it out.

Summary: What a MindFu.., well You Know, Awesome!
Review: I worked at a video store when this movie came out and ridiculed everything from the title to the plot on the videtape slipcover, that is until I watched it. I've seen a lot of movies and it takes a tremendous achievement in film making for me to say that I WAS BLOWN AWAY BY THIS MOVIE! It was impossible to guess what was going to happen, the cast was fantastic (Jennifer Connely, mmmmmmm...), the effects were worthy of an Academy Award. Great direction by Proyas (same guy who brought us The Crow) and a terrific script (which, by the way won a Bram Stoker Award). It's hard to describe this movie, a little bit of noir, a little bit of Blade Runner, and a striking resemblance to the Borg of Star Trek: The Next Generation. But it's not a Star Trek movie by a longshot. Eyecatching, Breathtaking, my only regret is that I missed it in theaters. If you like action, crime, sc-fi, or horror movies check this one out or just go ahead and buy it. You'll love yourself in the morning if you do.

Summary: Dark City
Review: I have a poor laserdisc of this. After seeing it the second time, I want to upgrade to DVD. Sutherland is excellent as the doctor, his acting is on a par with Sean Penn. Rufus Sewell is very convincing, but who is this masked man? I haven't seen him before or since. I need to look harder I guess. Jennifer is always gorgeous but I wish she was a better actor. Hurt is always very good and he did not disappoint this time. If you don't enjoy this movie, then you are probably not a sci-fi fan. I enjoyed it more than Blade Runner. I needed to watch it twice; first to follow the story line; second to appreciate the acting. The brief nudity is not contrived and this film shows that we can have convincing dialog without resorting to foul language. I hope it was a financial sucesss so that Hollywood can provide more exciting films like this one.

Summary: Original premise, excellent quality DVD
Review: A lot of people compare this movie to the Matrix, but I consider it to be an entirely seperate entity in itself. If you like dark and brooding movies (I definitely do), then this is a definite buy. Directed by Alex Proyas (The Crow), this movie has excellent acting and camera use, as well as a phenominal score. The only negative comment I can give it is the opening dialog, which spoils much of the premise at the beginning instead of letting the viewers discover it for themselves.

The quality of this DVD is absolutely top notch. Video images are crisp and clear, with excellent contract and color quality. Audio-wise, if you have a good home theater system this is definitely a DVD to show it off with. Hugely deep bass and great use of surround speakers.

Summary: This is one truely dark and thrilling SCI-FI
Review: What can I say, I love this movie. As a fan of SCI-FI an Horror flicks I was scepical when I saw the preview and the fact that it was only showing in the local Festival Films theater. But as with another film shown there (Screamers) I was very surprised. Alex Proyas has truely brought the vision of this dark land with its ominous overlords to life. The script and story line were perfect, and the acting talent delivered it flawlessly. I hadn't heard of Rufus Sewell before this flick (infact I still don't know much about him) but he portrayed the amneasiac with just the right amount of insecurity and panic it needed. Kiefer Sutherland played the perfect mad doctor and William Hurt was just eccentric enough to bring the odd detective to life. As for Jennifer Connelly, yummmmmmmmm, thats all I can say about that :). The DVD translation is just as good as the theatre release (minus the big screen) and running with surroud sound at high volume delivers the experience. So if you're into SCI-FIs that are just a little different and very dark, then you have to add this one to you're collection (espeacially if you're a Matrix fan).

Summary: Dark City = Bright Spot.
Review: This is likely what the makers of BATMAN envisioned, but missed. Had BATMAN, from a style standpoint, been the 'one small step for film' then Dark City is the 'one giant leap for film kind'. It is superb at translating theme through the use of the moody visuals and music. A heady approach to the future of filmmaking.

Think L.A. Confidential goes to Gotham City, and you have all you need to know to sit back and let this visionary piece of work wash over you.

I'll be the first to admit all the nay-saying I did in the theatres playing the Dark City trailers, but I gladly eat my words and look forward to seeing another like this from Mr. Proyas.
