Summary: A seminal work in the genre!!
Review: The most talked about sci-fi movie ever, or at least, up to this period in history. Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke take the viewer on a phantasmagoria of a ride where no man has gone before - or since.Everyone knows the story: a black, perfectly rectangular, monolith has been found on the moon. When it is unmooned (!?) it sends out a signal to the planet Pluto (Neptune?). Off go our intrepid astronauts, accompanied by the only "apparently" human character aboard the ship - the HAL 9000 computer. The sets aboard the varied number of vessels still look modern to my eyes, even after 30 years. Kubricks use of primary colors and basic geometric shapes for most of the displays, with either white or black backgrounds was perfect. Only those scenes that manifest a change in fashion stand out as somewhat outdated. I am not completely satisfied with the transfer to DVD, there are areas on the screen where the viewer can see individual pixels, a lot of individual pixels - this is not good! This is a seminal work in movie history, as such I recommend the following to bring this DVD up to the level this cinematic piece requires and deserves: 1) The sound track should be redone to take advantage of modern recording techniques and digital technology. 2) The image should be painstakingly remastered using the best available techniques to insure that the quality of the picture is above reproach. 3) The original commissioned music score should be provided so that the viewer can hear how it enhances the movie, or not. 4) The entire undertaking should be certified using the fabulous THX specifications. This movie deserves only the best!!!

Review: This was the right movie at the right time. Late sixties, space exploration, a new era for mankind. As a result it is as much a part of history as the Apollo missions are. Kubrick and NASA ushered in the new age together. A magnificent achievement. Only kubrick was more bold more optimistic. At the turn of the century the film's predictions have failed to materialize. But NASA and the scientists are slow. Kubrick is light years ahead of them. It does not really matter. A piece of philosophy as well. The late director wants to make his audience "THINK". This is of course a trademark of all of his movies but none more so than this one. Little dialog, the pictures and the music speak for themselves. Buy it, watch it, treasure it.

Review: I don't understand why people like this movie at all! I saw the movie because of the recent death of Kubrick. I was with great expectation. However, I was totally disappointed. I only saw it for the first 30 minutes because it is so boring and slow. If it is not Kubrick, I would stop at the first 15 minutes. For the first 30 minutes, there were hardly any dialogue at all, just music. I have difficulties to keep my attention focusing.

Review: I give this three stars, mainly for the lack of video quality. The video quality is on par with the edition on video tape. The movie itself is stunning, with its rich ballet of space ships and "classical thunder" soundtrack. This film is more art than anything else.

Review: 2001; A Space Odyssey on DVD is the best version of it I have ever seen. The picture quality is outstanding and the sound is terrific. This DVD version is absolutely cracking! I cannot find any fault with it in an way at all. Pure excellence.

Summary: Kubrick's Slow Ride
Review: Kubrick's films, as a rule, defy the rules. It's safe to say that you cannot show nearly ten minutes of raw establishing shots at the onset of a film. It's equally safe to say that series of abstract images and colors are a big no-no in a would-be mainstream, commercial film. Kubrick could give a rip. The essence of the film which makes it so fascinating is its willingness to play loose with the "rules." Space Travel is fast-paced and exciting, right? Kubrick's stroke of genius is to make a movie which is slow-paced and, to be honest, boring to explore the transformation of a society which is itself slow-paced and boring. Mankind is shown at its most mundane, making phone calls, dozing on long trips, jogging to stay in shape. Into this world is tossed an odd supernatural force, an injection of the divine, which literally speeds up the course of Dave's life and transforms him into... something wonderful. Kubrick doesn't need to be interesting. His boring movie is pointed right at every one of us, threatening us to take an odyssey into the cosmically divine.
