Summary: One of the greatest films of all time...
Review: This is what all new filmmakers should aspire to. Elegant and timeless. Anyone who finds it irrelevant really needs to do some serious soul-searching.

Summary: Second greatest film ever made?
Review: Everybody pretty much agrees that "Citizen Kane" is the greatest film ever made. "2001: A Space Odyssey" is a good contender for second place... but only because it was made many years after "Citizen Kane." "2001" is a very unconventional film that defies the basic concept of movie "entertainment." This isn't a "movie," it is a visual symphony on celluloid, a type of filmic sculpture where the artist doesn't use a chisel and hammer, but a camera lens and a microphone (and a host of other tools and special effects). No, 2001 isn't a "movie," its an "environment," and has be experienced as such to be fully appreciated.

Summary: a mesmerizing experience, even on a small TV screen
Review: When Stanley Kubrick died, French TV broadcasted "A clockwork orange", "Full metal jacket" and "2001" certainly the best of the three, certainly the greatest sci-fi movie ever made, maybe one of the 10 greatest movies in history. I was absolutely hypnotized by the last part, which is a pure poem. What does all this mean ? Anything you want.Yes, rhythm is slow, but I couldn't take my eyes off the screen. I hope I'll see it at least once in my lifetime on a big screen. Kubrick was a genius, and "2001" is certainly one of his masterpieces.

Summary: Kubrick's stunning masterpiece!!!
Review: Amazing. Nothing less than amazing;probably more. "2001: A Space Odyssey" is influential, mesmerizing, mystic(not in a new-age way, either), and deeply important. This deliberately slow-paced movie will put your brain in a dream-like state.

Summary: Everything you've heard about this movie is true!
Review: As most people who've seen it would agree, 2001 is one of the most important movies, regardless of genre, created in this century. It expanded the scope of what a movie could be by an unquantifiable degree.

What makes the DVD edition of this movie so wonderful, though, is the inclusion of a speech by Arthur C. Clarke given prior to the premiere of the movie in 1968. It provides a wonderful glimpse back into the time at which the movie was released, a much more hopeful, less cynical time when the whole of the universe seemed to be within our reach. Clarke's speech provides a wonderful context in time for viewing what has become a timeless movie.

Summary: A milestone production light years ahead of its time
Review: Like or not, 2001 is the bar by which all other science fiction films are judged. What a stunning visual masterpiece. No film before or since has so acutely depicted the sheer isolation, vastness and maddening silence of outer space. Kubrick's film is even more astounding considering it was made more than 30 years ago. And like so many of Kubrick's films, the more times you see it , the more you appreciate it.And talk about unforgettable soundtracks. Wow. The music is so much a part of the 2001 experience. Sure, it's a long movie. But what a ride.

Summary: Deliberately Buried
Review: Yes, there is a bedroom in the morn and a bedroom in the evening, and a bedroom at the end of a linear accelerator too! Dinnerware and silk robes, bathtubs and armoirs! I know I am alive and dreaming!

Despite some early seventies pop-cult/nihilistic debris, the film accurately "questions the master's talent", and after having seemed riddled with abstraction only a decade ago, it has finally accomplished one of its tasks: The translation of "technology" into "divinity", and vice versa. Are we not presently a bit ambivalent about our parallelogram? Are we not enticed, laying neuron threads over silicon?

The only thing dated about this is when you first saw it. For those bogged down by "obvious" or "transparent" themes, try to sing Daisy. And open the pod-bay doors. Open the pod-bay doors.

Summary: ONE OF THE BEST SCI-FI MOVIES OF ALL TIME
Review: This is a classic. Some people I know don't like it because it is too long but for me, I loved it. It's one of the best films ever made and it was made from one of the best directors ever lived.

Summary: Stanley Kubrick's Masterpiece that still lives today...
Review: I'll admit it: 2001 is perhaps one of the slowest movies in history, moving at the pace of a tortoise the entire way through. However it is also one of the most ingenious, original, and simply breathtaking films ever to grace the big screen. Stanley Kubrick knew he was making something special when he made this movie, and the only way to truly experience this sweeping view of life in the future is on the big screen. Unfortunately, it is a rare event to be able to see this movie in the theatre, but at least DVD is the second best thing. 2001 looks great on DVD and sounds even better. Amazingly this landmark film has managed to stand the test of time, and only seems dated with the hokey ape makeup at the beginning of the film. For all the film buffs out there though, you can't say that you are a true fan of Science Fiction until you've seen 2001:A Space Odyssey.
