Summary: To call this movie a classic gives real classics a bad name
Review: I know it isn't popular to dislike "2001 - A Space Odyssey" (...), but I do dis-like this movie. It really boggles my mind how so many people on here give this movie a 5 star rating and call it a "classic" or "the best movie of all time".If you want a true classic, which includes a compelling plot, characters you feel for, beautiful direction, etc., then watch movies like "The Godfather", almost anything from Alfred Hitchcock, "Shawshank Redemption", "A Beautiful Mind", "Ben Hur", "Awakenings", "Sound of Music", or "Forrest Gump". To classify "2001" as a classic in as insult to the true classics. But that's just my opinion, everybody is entitled to their own. Hey, somebody might consider "Police Academy 7" a classic! To put it frankly, "2001" is quite simply the most boring movie I have ever seen. I literally had to fight to stay awake...my eyelids became so heavy. But I did manage to stay awake through it all, and I just didn't get the whole point of the movie. If somebody asked me how the movie ended, I could not explain it to them, and I saw it with my own two eyes! To me, this combination of boredom and confusion does not make an enjoyable experience. Maybe the movie is a little too deep for me. I enjoy deep movies that make you think afterwards, but this is taking it too far. By eliminating anything resembling a coherent plot with interesting dialogue, it makes watching this movie a chore. So anyway, I just wanted to give my 2 cents on this movie and basically say that a movie can offer symbolism and artistic creativity and vision without sacrificing the other crucial factors in a good movie.

Summary: rather watch the discovery channel
Review: I tried to watch this movie, but it was so boring that I fell asleep 20 minutes of so before it ended.... If I wanted to learn about evolution I would search online or watch the discovery channel... I actually enjoy that. I don't see why everyone loves this movie. I may give it another try, but I really don't get it... There is nothing exciting about this film.. It potrays a story of evolution that could be told in 5 minutes in 2 long boring hours. --- edit:
You know, I really dont think I gave this movie a fair chance. I did not understand it and I did not even pay attention. After watching Kubrick's film "A Clockwork Orange" and hearing such great reviews of this movie I think I will give ti a second chance.

Review: This is not a movie, this is a scientific+mystical experience. This movie will challenge your mind, your understanding of the universe we live in and what the meaning of our existance in this frame of spacetime and religion is. Awesome visually as conceptually. IT IS THE KING OF ALL MOVIEs of this gender. That is all I have to say. Open your eyes and you shall see. Amen.

Summary: A visionary film
Review: 2001 A Space Odyssey is a profoundly made film of the future by Kubrick. This is a film that requires patience from the audience and each is left to decide on his or her own impressions by the end of the film. Although there is some great dialogue (especially by "Hal") words are not most lasting feature, in fact no words are spoken until at least 30 minutes or so into the film. It's visually stunning, even now thirty five years later, it hasn't failed to create an impression on new audiences. There have been some great reviews on this site, so I won't delve into the plotline. What is interesting is the contrast between another science fiction film from an equally great filmaker released around the same time- Solaris. To the Soviets, 2001 was the "capitalist" version of the future while Solaris was a humane, marxist version of what was to come. While they obviously got 2001 basically wrong, these two films together create a great contrast. Based loosely on an Arthur C. Clarke story The Sentinel, Kubrick reworked a large portion of it with Clarke to adapt it to the screen while trying to remain loyal to the written version. Especially impressive is the soundtrack- especially Strauss' "Also Spake Zarathustra". There are so many scenes in which are timeless: the monolith, the bone thrown into the air that becomes a space vehicle, the revolving space station, the conversation between the astronauts in the space pod, Hal's daisy song and the star gate sequence near the end. If you ever get the opportunity to see this in a theater take advantage of it. In my opinion this is Kubrick's best film and one of the best films ever made.

Summary: I'd say ambivalent about covers it.
Review: Without question the most boring movie ever produced. But, I have an idea of how we can add some real entertainment spice to this film-let's make it interactive...sort of like Rocky Horror. We can do a "shirts and skins" thing, and pass out Mastodon femurs to all the patrons, pro and con, then sponsor a free-for-all about halfway through the movie with the winners deciding whether it's worth sitting through the balance of this so-called masterpiece. I'm betting that all we troglodytes that despise this movie so much will win that battle everytime, no matter how greatly outnumbered. Haw haw haw.... there's a statement about "evolution" that you can sink your teeth into. Now let's look at Kubrick himself and what his true vision for 2001 may have been. If you consider the balance of his most successful work they all have insanity or some sort of personal haunting dementia as it's primary theme...the insanity of war, destructive obsessiveness, etc. And if you apply this thought process, or "vision", to 2001 then the natural conclusion one might arrive at is this.....it's already interactive, Kubrick designed it that way to inspire the natural selection process in his audience thereby segregating us into two classes-the one group that will identify with James Mason's "Lolita" character as an obsessive, sexually repressed perverted intellectual, and the other that will no doubt be driven insane after sitting through this overlong snore-a-thon.... thus connecting us all eventually to the quirky genius behind camera. I like Kubrick for the most part and on balance I suppose I can even forgive him for butchering The Shining, but in the final analysis "2001" is a dull and lifeless space opera that may fire off a neuron or two but it doesn't pass for entertainment. 2 mainframes, in dire need of an upgrade.

Summary: Is the Monolith supposed to represent God?
Review: What can I say? It's one of those movies that just grows on you after time. Being a sci fi fan myself I loved all the scenes aboard the Discovery starship. Although the ending was a bit abstract...man being reborn into a new life form....it was a visual masterpiece. I have to wonder why there wasn't more of a background story for the monolith.

Summary: not even worth one star
Review: This movie is about space and what people back then thought the year 2001 would be like. It makes no sense, it ruined my whole day, just seeing this movie! My dad suggested that I see it, so I went to see it with him, the only good thing about that was the theatre was old fashioned and had an organ player before the movie started and during the intermission. Don't waste your time or your money, it isn't worth it.

Summary: Wow - but not for everyone
Review: If your idea of entertainment is lots of explosions, car chases, and other various forms of mindless entertainment don't get this movie. Now on to the review. Though the movie can be a bit long at times the intended effect is to sort of educate the reader the realities of space exploration. For example, there is a scene where a lunar vehicle lands on the moon. The whole scene from approach to finally landing on the pad takes several minutes. You don't see that on Star Trek. Even in the space vehicle that is heading to Jupiter there are two astronauts who spend most of their time running around and playing games trying to kill time. You can't get much more realistic than this. You don't see space people in cheesy space suits zooming around at warp speed and running into aliens that speak the same language. Plus there is a good message in this film but you will have to watch it in order to see what it is. (I don't want to spoil the movie for you) So if you want a serious and intelligent film with emphasis on reality this is a good pick.

Review: No matter how many times I see this this incredible film it always continues to surprise and amaze me.I'm hooked from the first frame to the last.This recently remastered dvd makes it look and sound better than ever.
